Hello,
I am curios about how the EVE comunity land on the Cpt Phillips movie. EVE is know about having very intelligent people doing all level of pvp activities. Also, we.. love pirates. Just because they are intelligent and beware of all of the game mechanics.
I know that the majority of the EVE community is based in USA, people who hate the somalian pirates and also the somalian people (see black hawk down). I DO NOT wanna take conclusion over what is bad or wrong, I'm just really curios about how people feel about the movie, what's the general feeling about the somalians whom live in USA, etc.
Thank You. |

I doubt that anyone who plays this game has romantic notions of real life piracy. "CCP is changing policy, and has asked that we discontinue the bonus credit program after November 7th. So until then, enjoy a super-bonus of 1B Blink Credit for each 60-day GTC you buy!"

Unlike Ramona I'm not so upset by 'EXTREMELY sweeping and judgemental statement[s]'.
I have a hunch that your average American couldn't point to Somalia on a map. I know where it is, I know what it's like from second hand sources, I know about the events in Mogadishu. I simply don't care about Somalia. I think that's the strongest feeling you'd find from the average American towards Somalia, too. That is, if Ramona could pardon my 'EXTREMELY sweeping judgemental statement' to say so.
As far as that's concerned, it's a stretch to relate real life piracy to EVE.

You seem quite bothered by the fact other people might have an opinion on ill-informed and quite frankly ridiculously reactionary statements.
But if you don't think saying "All Americans must think this way.." is an extremely sweeping statement, you should probably check the meaning of the phrase out.
That said, you seem to think most Americans are stupid, so I suppose you do understand it, even if you can't actually put it into a recognisable or coherent thought.

The notions that various governments have about Somalia and the notions that Eve players have about nullsec are comparable.
Somalia is said to be "living under anarchy" as if to imply that it's a constant free for all of violence and mayhem when in fact, outside of Mog, the tribes get along most of the time and their cattle production has had positive GDP at times. Most of the land is owned by the tribes and that being private property is well cared for.
But the comparison is such, we in the west are supposed to go "ooooh! Anarchy! They eat babies!" and then hug our own tyrannical governments so much more.
The "governments" of Eve perpetuate the myth that nullsec is the zone of instant gank and failure - unless you join their alliance of course.
So if you want a comparison, the ONLY thing that compares is the propaganda and the perception of people who believe only what they are told by other people with an agenda.
The rest... meh.
And those Somali "Pirates", uh..... once again it's part of the narrative. Yeah "Somalia has anarchy and therefore... PIRRRAAATESSS!". Yeah, in America, the Coast Guard boards you saying they are looking for drugs and weapons and then asks you about your personal life trying to get anything you say so they can use it against you.
These "pirates" in Somalia are called thus by.. governments... and what were some of these governments doing off the coast of Somalia before these "pirates"?
They were dumping toxic waste. Somali fishermen, having their livelihood destroyed, and no real navy to speak of, had to take matters into their own hands.
So, less than an hour of searching the internet will reveal the truth about Somalia (but hey, that's Africa and they are black to screw it, right? It's not trendy enough) and less than a week of searching New Eden will reveal the truth about the game too.

Woah, easy there Ramona. I apologize for almost hurting your feelings. We can talk about if you want. Get those feelings and burdens off your chest.
It doesn't bother me even a little bit that people have opinions on ill-informed and quite frankly ridiculously reactionary statements, actually, and I wanted to make sure my 'hunch that Americans couldn't point to Somalia on a map' didn't bother you, either. You're clearly very sensitive. I wanted to make a sincere effort to let you know I mean no ill will.
That said, you seem to make quite the leap in your thought process. I don't think most average Americans could point to Somalia on a map. That's quite a far cry from me thinking they're all hopelessly stupid morons. Knowing the location of Somalia has extremely little impact on, I would say, a vast majority of anyone's (American or otherwise) day to day life. Why should I think you're stupid for not knowing where Somalia is?
I pointed out your spelling mistake because you got on your moral high horse. You can't ride the moral high horse unless your saddle is fastened securely (some John Wayne douchebaggery reference for you, Unsuccessful At Everything). In this case, your saddle is correct grammar used to convey 'a recognisable or coherent thought.' (are you non-American English speaking because of S instead of Z?)
I am American. I hope you don't think that I think most of us are stupid. I don't let myself get so easily and childishly offended over something so trivial and petty as OP's asking if Americans hate Somalis and EVE pirates or whatever it was. Hopefully we can be the bestest of pals. Sorry if I almost hurt your feelings. Thanks for the gold star. |

Why would Americans hate Somalis? We don't hate Iraqis, Afghanis, Bosnians or Serbians, Panamanians, Yugoslavs, Colombians, Dominicans, Vietnamese, Koreans, Russians, Italians, Japanese, or Germans, so why would Somalis be special?
There's no sense in hating your wartime enemies. You accomplish the goals of the war (or not), and then you're done. Hating them just makes it harder to be done with the war after it's over. It's especially counterproductive to decide you hate the civilians of your enemy countries. EvE: Everyone vs Everyone

Thank You. Just a note. I don't think most americans "hate" the somalian people, I think we're ignorant about them. The US government's policies (for better or worse) are focused strongly on international trade, and somali pirates being in the news doesn't exactly get them good press.
The present objective is to declare that "terrists" are in control of Somalia and use that as an excuse to expand military involvement there in the long term.
You see there is oil under Somalia, but the oil companies don't want to confront the land owners (the tribes) that own it.
We can't have Somalis benefiting from their own oil. It's bad enough that the Norwegians and Venezuelans got to profit from their own oil and we can't have this happen you see. Oil execs need to keep those huge incomes up because the American government is not bought out cheaply.
So the long term goal is to further extremism in Africa (I was told about Libya and Egypt by an "insider" 2 years before it happened) and then in the chaos, install governments more friendly to oil companies so all that great oil rich land can be robbed from the owners.
The owners will probably be equated with "plantation owners of the American South" or something or be called "landlords" or some other word that has a negative connotation so Boobus Americanus, only partially paying attention (those semi-AFK people) will automatically side with the narrative of the state.

The owners will probably be equated with "plantation owners of the American South" or something or be called "landlords" or some other word that has a negative connotation so Boobus Americanus, only partially paying attention (those semi-AFK people) will automatically side with the narrative of the state.

I have traveled to various African nations, and lived in Mozambique. Mozambique is the third most underdeveloped country in the world in regards to education, agriculture, infrasturcture, etc (DRC and Niger beat them out). For all my time spent there, I can barely pass judgement on the country as a whole.
The Mozambicans have a staggering abundance of natural resources (offshore oil deposits, coal, other forms of agriculture) but a corrupt government that cannot manage any of it and spread the wealth. The average Mozambican is very, very friendly and eager to learn, earn, and live well. But corruption is a huge problem in most African countries, and it takes its toll.
I have seen firsthand the effects of what living in squalor does to people. When you sleep on the sidewalk, drink from a filthy canal filled with rubbish, bathe in the ocean, and sell trinkets on the street corner 7 days a week so you can afford to buy a loaf of bread, it's no wonder some see crime as a viable alternative lifestyle. The lack of proper education countrywide only compounds the issue as they fall further and further behind the power curve.
In regards to Somali pirates, I'm sure they are making a living the best way they know how, and trying to survive and be breadwinners for their family.
Does that make piracy okay? No. Would I treat a pirate like a pirate Can I hate an entire culture because there are a few bad eggs? No.
Rash and unfounded generalisations about an entire population are stupid, especially if you have NEVER seen any of it firsthand, or tried living their lifestyle.
American out.

Why is this thread in the EVE Online forums? Near as I can tell, it doesn't have anything to do with this game.
Also, I'm an American who lives in a Somali neighborhood in the US. Somali food is good, Somali women are hot, oh yeah, and Blackhawk Down was an awesome movie, and it in no way made me dislike Somalis or gave me the impression that Americans dislike Somalis. everevolutionaryfront.blogspot.com |

Thank You. Just a note. I don't think most americans "hate" the somalian people, I think we're ignorant about them. The US government's policies (for better or worse) are focused strongly on international trade, and somali pirates being in the news doesn't exactly get them good press.
I think maybe you should watch this as your next film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2532528/ then read a few books by Noam Chomsky (Manufacturing Consent and Hegemony or survival for instance).
You should also know that a survey of EU residents for the country that was the biggest danger to world peace was a tie between Israel and the US.
Here is a short list of american aggression since WW2 https://wikispooks.com/wiki/US_Bombing_campaigns_since_1945 Here is a list of countries Iran has invaded in the last century or so..... error non found...... America invaded Somalia a while back and since then has removed the only stable government that formed there, regularly kills civilians using drone strikes and provides weapons and training to a number of violent warlords. But ofc they are the bad ones. American government policies are aimed at keeping as much of the world poor as possible and killing anyone that trys to subvert power away from dictatorships and multinationals. Most international trade is internal to large companies and is thus more command economy than "trade". anyway i hope you start doing a bit of research into how the US (and its allies including my own country) helps make the world a poorer place using the IMF, the world bank, multinationals and armed force. Only a few brave people have stood up to them including Fidel Castro and also in part his protegee Nelson Mandela (whose resistance movement was trained and armed by Cuba). These forums aren't the place for this but your posting displayed such shocking ignorance of world events that i felt i needed to point you towards some actual facts rather than the nonsense broadcasted by media barons and governments. here is a list of all the fiat currencies that didn't end up at zero value.....and here is a list of the places where a currency pegged to a real commodity has successfully co-existed with compound interest....-á Here is a physics professor explaining why sustainable growth isn't a thing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-QA2rkpBSY |

The US has bad foreign policy. This is known. It's an unfortunate consequence of a political and media environment in which only cynical, self-serving assholes can hold high political office. You can't fairly judge us as a people based on that. We are victims of it as much as anybody else.
Having spent a large part of my adult life in subsaharan Africa, though, I find the idea that Europe has any moral high ground to stand on in this conversation just a little bit ridiculous. everevolutionaryfront.blogspot.com |

I don't think the German forces on the Eastern front were ever 4 times the size of their forces on the Western front. But yeah, much much bigger and more brutal.
The Germans had maybe 50% more forces deployed to the Eastern front than the Western front, but lost more than 4 times as many casualties killed.
