Possibly, but in most cases not, its all dependant on router type/software an transport medium.
Not always, I'd agree, but there is a better than fair chance. You should ALWAYS hide the first IP outside of your physical network if you post a trace in public. Always.

So tell me, what exactly can you diagnose with ping, id be interested to know.
A ping can tell you if the target host (or something that appears like the target host) answers with a ICPM echo response to a ICMP echo request. You also learn how much time went by between those 2 packets.
What that _means_ is another story and mostly based on assumptions and wild guess.

Which is about as usefull as finding out the colour of a server.

The OP's post is utterly meaningless in any useful way. He needs to be talking to his ISP in any case, not CCP. Signature size to big, please keep it under 24000 bytes - Petwraith |

An apt analogy I'd say - if you know the colour of the server in a rack it makes it easier to find it.
Long term ping and packetloss monitoring aren't going to solve the problem, but they're useful tools to help narrow down the search for a root cause. ______

1 is your NAT IP 2 is probably your CM internal IP (if it works the same way as NTL) 3 is your IP 4 is your BY proxy IP
Added: I'm guessing Newcastle Upon Tyne, or somewhere close.
none of them are my ip IP currently assigned to my router is 82.39.34.** and yes im from newcastle but that isnt hard to figure out seeing as how blueyonder have some of there routers named after the area of a city they are in ,i think there is a BY page with a list of them and what area the abbreviation stands for to.
btw if you think you can find out my ip by port scanning that small range go for it and ill give you 10mil isk if you get it right

I didn't use any names, just the IP.
For yor own safety you should still always block the first IP outside your network.
Seriously.

There are 255 possible answers, realisticly most Routers only route within the first 200. Therefore 200 port scans on the 26000 port looking for activity. Wouldn't be hard at all.
Fortunately, I'm at work and don't have my network kit with me.
As for the high ping times of the OP. Do a traceroute and find where the delay goes from 30ms to 500ms. THAT is the problem. Chances are it's the internet proxy that china forces between all ISPs and the outside world. ___________________________________________ The deeper you stick it in your vein, the deeper the thoughts there's no more pain. ___________________________________________ |

Most traffic on the "Public" Internet is not prioritized so a ping gets just as much priority as any other packet.
On MPLS, also known as EVPN, there is prioritization but this is usually restricted to private connections for businesses etc.
So traffic on port 26000 on the "Public" Internet has as much chance of getting through as ICMP traffic.
Pings on the ôPublicö Internet can be used to bench mark and show trends due to this lack of prioritization but the down side is they also add to the latency and will ultimately slow you down (and others more) which is why it is better to stagger pings such as 1 min of pings every 10 min or so then to keep up a constant ping.
Trace routes will give you information as stated above on where the issue is, provide this to your ISP and they should be able to help youà
