Imagine you are a fleet commander and you warp your fleet from a station undock to a titan pos so you can bridge your fleet to your destination. Suddenly a hictor decloaks 20km off your titan pos and lights a cyno. An Archon comes through and lights another cyno.
12 Machariels come through the second cyno and begin to bump your titan pilot out of the pos, a hostile Dominix fleet comes through last and begins to kill your fleet which is now bubbled on the edge of a pos they cant get into because the titan pilot had to change the pos password to avoid being bumped out.
You begin typing: guys guys guys- hang on while I type out these instructions...
Meanwhile your fleet is dead and you are still furiously typing and backspacing changing instructions with the shifting battlefield.
(This actually happened- and no, no one is ever gonna command a fleet with text only thats idiotic) |

In the days of flying spaceships between solar systems voice to voice communication is an immersion killer? why not join a RP corp and pretend to be space people together. surely fleet communication via text is a bigger immersion breaker considering the tech we have access to? here is a list of all the fiat currencies that didn't end up at zero value.....and here is a list of the places where a currency pegged to a real commodity has successfully co-existed with compound interest....-á Here is a physics professor explaining why sustainable growth isn't a thing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-QA2rkpBSY |

Look man, if you're playing this game for ArrPees, that's one thing, but all effective PvP and PvE forces use voice. Furthermore, why on earth would you be averse to making real friends with people? That's what this game has always been about for me. The politics, daily doctrines and operations of all good EVE corporation require solid communications.
End of story. |

Before teamspeak was common, people actually typed ingame, and it's still doable, but ofc not as good. I guess it depends abit on how well oiled the gang is and if they know what to do. I saw some alliance recruiting a while ago, they where non-teamspeak, can't recall the name. |

I hate Teamspeak, too. Voice chats in general. Makes it really hard to continue pretending I'm actually a girl to dupe desperate kids out of their ISK and other goodies. A little flirtatious text and a ~<3 or =^_^= in a text chat are much easier to work with.
At least EvE Voice makes it easier, and it isn't difficult to convince someone who wants to voice chat that you don't want to give out your TS account to a random person. |

It wasn't common in 2003 early game, but by 2004 it had become popular (and essential) for the Alliances and larger corps |

take it from me, once they find out you are a real girl things can get awkward with the weird silences, then the tentative flirts, the offers of phallus, marriage proposals and e-stalking. it's almost not even worth the isk donations

Yeah, voice comms does a number on the RP factor. Admittedly, many of us aren't so big into that to begin with.
I've discovered that the people who refuse to jump on voice have a higher tendency towards troll behavior and can't be trusted as much. I think voice comms are a very good thing. EVE players have a way of forgetting that they're interacting with real people, and voice comms reminds us of that. |

I've often wished that more women played EVE. Then I see how they are treated on comms, and the male:female ratio suddenly makes sense.

This is a pretty valid point, after all we all remember when neil aldrin jumped off of the moon lander, opened up IRC on his laptop and typed "one small step for man something something who cares" and i hear that the iraq war is being co-ordinated entirely thru txt messages makes u think |

Having used Eve Voice extensively for small gangs (mainly in FW) I do not understand the hate. Sure it doesn't cut the mustard for fcukhueg alliances that need 24/7 communication even when the nodes crash, but it really isn't as bad as people make it out to be for relatively small corporations/fleets. Relatively small here meaning around at least 50 people. I remember the in-game voice chat working adequately even though the reinforced(!) node was creaking under a fairly unusual 600 or so people in the system, of which around 120 of was in our fleet (This happened in 2009, Kamela, a lowsec system if you're wondering why 600 people was unusually high number). |

I like voice chat too, whether that's ts or eve voice. I don't see it as immersion breaking either as I am speaking to people that I fly with who identify themselves on ts with the same name as their eve character. I fly with an international crowd, lots of different accents, makes for good characterisations. It feels like new eden to me. Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction... |
