All I will say is that there will be very little point running a fast card like a 6800 or the like on a computer that only has a 4X AGP. Mostly due to the fact the CPU is not going to be hugely fast and thus it will bottleneck a fast GFX card and it will be slowed down because of it..
So something in the either the Nvidia 4 or 5 series would be find or the ATi 9800.
These will run fine on a 4X AGP (I managed to get a 4Ti running on a 1X AGP slot)

I still run eve on a geforce 4 ti 4200 128mb agp 8x (but in a 4x mobo) and its fine. Been using it for years ... its a great card ... my eve performance does jerk occasionally but that is entirely down to the fact my cpu is a athlon xp 1600+ and i only have 512mb ram ... the gfx card still performs reasonably well ... for example i can play crashday with maximum detail settings at 1024x768 with no jerk whatsoever (surprised me quite a bit)

Edited by: Sybylle on 23/03/2006 10:57:46 Get a new computer such as this one
Otherwise, an nVidia 4 serie based GPU would world very well. I wouldn't recommend a 6xxx GPU as they worth the investement IF you do ot plan to change your machine within 1 year. Site ICEÖ since 33204 AD

I disagree, get enough video memory and you can just load the entire texture file for Eve in one fell sweep, without having to check back with the main memory every time. The motherboard -> vidcard pipe has been a red herring for a long time - people saw it back when you had PCI / AGP video cards that you could compare, and on cards that have lines that do both AGP8X/PCIE. There's not a ton of difference in today's games.
Though if you could run, say, a 512mb video card in a PCI slot and find a game that actually saturates the memory, you might have a bit of a performance hit. Contribute to the Eve Wiki |

I ran Eve on Ti4600 for a long time and had absolutely no graphics problems.

If it were me giving advice to a friend, I'd suggest a radeon 9800 pro. A computer that old isn't worth spending more than minimum to upgrade it. A 9800 pro is great for CoH and I run two copies of eve with it on my own system.
It'll also outperform anything short of a 6600 gt.
I know the difference between right and wrong... I just don't care. |
