In a real world sense...
Take your TV to your local council refuse tip, leave it with the other junk tellys, then call the police when someone walks off with and see what the police say. Now do it with the rest of your tellys and the dishwasher. Quote:
I suppose it must be okay to steal someone's bike, cat, dog, flower pots, mail boxes, lawn ornaments, perennial garden contents, boat, car, restaurant "today's special" board on the sidewalk, garbage bin, recycling bin, shrubbery, or generally anything that isn't touching them?
Wow!
Hence the "take it to the council tip and throw it away" bit. By jettisoning something, you're throwing it away.
No, I'm not. I'm dropping it out of my ship because I can't currently hold it for one reason or another. The can's are called cargo containers, not garbage containers.
Do you consider the birth of a child throwing it away? Do you condone the abduction of children as the children are no longer in their mothers' wombs?
IRL, some mining operations involve the piling up of unprocessed ore/sediment by miners in the open, which is then hauled and processed by someone/something else, moving the unprocessed rock matrix which holds the valuable target of their mining operation to a refining/processing facility.
This is very similar to a mining vessel jettisoning its ore and then having a hauler/refiner take over. This difference now is that those miners IRL can defend the fruits of their labour, while in EVE we cannot. Does this make sense? I think not.
We'll see if the next patch changes things.

cc is trash, it has been staited so by CCP. Buy some secure cc's and start thinking of ways to campare mining to rape, or whale hunting, oh wait, how about the use of an mwd is the same as shooting methanphetamine into your viens...

Edited by: Jash Illian on 12/09/2003 14:27:44 Oh will yall stop with the stupid "Say you have a bag of apples..." bushllit???
To end that part of the discussion, unless a cop was right there at the time and unless you're a little old lady living on her pension, most cops won't give a damn after you tell them "Well I left it laying right there..." or "I left the keys in the ignition while I went to..." or "I was only going around the corner so I didn't lock...". Cops, in the real world, call that Stupidity. They don't waste effort trying to correct other people's Stupidity when there are real crimes being committed.

I have a better analogy. Because all the ones I see pretty much don't apply or aren't very good.
It isn't like going into someones home or taking there bike or wallet. Because when you jeteson something into space you are meaning to trow it on the side of the street or litter a park. If someone picks it up wiether you are standing there watching it or at home getting you truck to go pick it up it is fair game and not like really stealing.
using a jet-can is more like using an ATM and drawing out money, and while you take the money out say you do lots of withdraws you just dump the money on the side of the road. If it was like the game a magic container would appear to hold the stuff you are throwing away.
From what I have heard when them mean you steal from someone and (according to the development section) the police come, they mean someone used the Hack skill to steal from a secure can or someone took your stuff from a non-secure can(not to be confused with jet-cans).
Jet cans where ment to hold loot when you die ot a NPC dies. In alot of other games when you drop or jet something it is destroyed or lost. I think they should adopt that game mechanic. Because when you select that jetteson commend your aggreeing to forfiet your right of ownership from the object.

In RL there are laws that govern what is private property and what is salvage. If I put my briefcase down while I am buying a hotdog, it is still my property and anyone taking it without my permission is a thief. However, if I leave my briefcase on the street and walk away, it will become salvage after a reasonable time and someone who finds it and picks it up will not be considered a thief.
EVE laws do not follow RL laws. The way jetisoned canisters work right now they become salvage as soon as they leave your cargohold. You can get ownership of the ore again by picking it up and putting it back in your cargohold but so can anyone else.
The way things are right now might not be 'right' but taking ore out of jettisoned cans is not illegal as per current EVE laws and as such do not constitute theft.

It is not like just leaving you briefcase on the side while you bu a hotdog but more like throw it in the trash, or put down on the side and say you don't want it or that you forfiet your rights to it.
Would you please read my entire post before making comments? I clearly differentiate between actions that preserve your property rights and actions that forfeit them.
The main point is that in EVE jetisoning anything from your cargo hold into an unsecure cargo container, will forfeit your rights to it no matter what you do or say.

(Spots the horse. Appears dead. Prods the horse. It moves. Yup, still alive, but barely).
My 2 ISK: All trying to call ore thieves 'thieves' are working from a mistaken assumption: That the fact that you've mined ore suddenly miraculously makes it yours.
The ore is not yours - asteroids are public property. You are simply helping yourself to some of that freely available public ore to sell for money. If you are silly enough to leave that ore floating around in space, then you have NO legal claim to it - REGARDLESS of your proximity to it.
Your only recourse is to discourage people from taking this ore through threats of violence, intimidation, etc. But if you commit violence, that IS a crime, and prepare to take the consequences.
So ore 'thieves' are not thieves. They are scavengers. People who leave publically available ore lying around in a container do so at their own risk. It's not even considered salvage. No ownership was ever involved.
Why do you think the government insisted on CLAIMS to land during the gold rush? It's to give the miner legal ownership of the land they were exploiting. Once you have the legal ownership of the land, then whatever you take from it is yours, and not before.
'nuff said.

Edited by: Pistolio on 12/09/2003 18:34:49 Cargo container, even if jettison, are owned by the person who jettisoned it. When you click "show info" on a container, you see the pic of the owner. So, IMHO, you should not touch it, or it become theft. So, i understand and i can live with the fact that there's ore thief.
The part I dont like, is that you CANT DO ANYTHING against these thieves. If you attack, police will come to wipe you. Taking item in a cargo owned by someone should be considered like a threat, or an attack, and you should be able to fire on that thief without penalty. ____________________________________________

Edited by: Vidar Kentoran on 12/09/2003 18:43:15 The devs have already stated that they don't care about ore thieves -- they provided the secure containers for a reason.
If you don't use the tools provided, that's just too damn bad isn't it?
All this whining does nothing but fill the boards with spam because no one cares.

Kalhan: Miners do not intend to "throw away" their ore.
I have nothing against the ability for others to steal ore, just with the lack of retalitory measures available to the victim of the theft.
I choose not to respond to a certain peabrain, as he cannot grasp my analogies.. I don't like using them, but sometimes it is the only way to make others understand.

Would you stop with the silly real world analogies. This isn't the real world, it's not even close.
In real world you aren't a noname temp/trash character, you have a real name. You aren't protected by anonymity, you probably got friends, family and colleagues.
Make peoples real name and address linked to accounts and players, so you can see that information ingame. Only then will you see players start behaving, apart from the occasional sociopaths. This isn't the idea of a online roleplaying game though and I highly doubt you'll ever see it introduced.
Keep whining about ore "thieves" and it'll only end in one way. CCP will fix it by making jettisoned containers the size of the item(s) you jettison. No more 27000 capacity containers for anyone, you're forced to use tiny (in comparision) containers or create a new container everytime you're full. Oh yeah and do remember the 3 minute limit.
Jettisoned containers was never intended to be used for mining the way they are now, the reason they are so big is because CCP was too lazy to implement a dynamic container for jettisoned items.
Be glad you have the 27k containers you can (ab)use for mining. And go somewhere less crowded to mine like that. Get a mining friend to haul the ore for you. Mine in 0.0 space where you can shoot back. There's plenty of viable options.
But please stop the ore theft whining. You want to be safe in 1.0-0.5 space, but you also want to be able to protect "your" ore. Well you can't have both.
