EVE looks pretty good, and will look MUCH better once the GFX engine upgrades have been finalised and deployed.
I would be curious to know whether the CCP art department is thinking up new ideas for space backgrounds and more detailed planet skins.
Im thinking along the lines of those magnificent ones seen in Homeworld and Homeworld 2.
Here are a few examples:
Fancy backdrop 1
Check out the backdrop in this screenie!
Well, you get the idea.

loved the scenery in that mission from screenie 1, getting to that tranmittor(sp)
far into the backgroun so u could never reach it, but moving the further u go in to give a sense of distance ________________ I don't DO graphics, here's a sig anyway, wubwoo - Cortes lol thanks :-) |

CCP already has some really cool backdrops from some of the COSMOS and Complexes, many have cool electrical storms, whirlwind looking nebula and twinkly lights, but i think CCP in the future could make some 3D backdrops, there is a kinda cheat way of making 3D backgrounds, anyone who has toyed with making Half-Life 2 maps will understand the 3D backdrops that look as if the level expands much further than it does, im sure CCP could use this "trick on the eye" for eve's backgrouds.

Edited by: Suze''Rain on 29/03/2006 00:39:55 I don't really want cheesy cliche game-space backgrounds.... but on the other hand, I'd kill to see some more variation in the backgrounds, with inspiration based on things like the following images of space...
Example Another example Stunning does'nt that feel like it has depth? Phwoar! Look at the nebulas on that 'un!
Ideally, what I personally would like to see would be the designers developing a range of around 75 backgrounds, one for each region, that are destinctive in such a way that each region is visibly identified by what it's surroundings are like. for example, players looking at a screenshot and going "ahh, look, there's a twisting gaseous nebulae there, that's Immensea" or "see the way there's no gas clouds? that's the Citadel, definately" Combine that with a slightly controlled pallette range for each system area, and you'd start to get a feeling that you're in different areas, rather than the backgrounds all being simple hue shifted clones of each other.
just my one groat's worth.

Quote: Also after seeing the footage of planetary flight, im sure CCP actually fully capable of 3D backdrops, that video was cool *hmm must watch that again*
I... Must... See...
And as for the idea of backdrops being based on the region, and being able to visibly identify where you are by the look? Absolutely fantastic idea. This would do such a huge amount for the game honestly. ------- Remember, remember the fifth of November The gunpowder treason and plot. Well, currently backgrounds are broken down by constellation, but there's only 10 or so. Doing it by region would be interesting, though regions tend to overlap some (thus giving the whole thing a bit of an odd air.)

As for the original linked examples... well, doing stuff with the suns like Homeworld and HW2 did is hard in the EVE engine, primarily due to the different natures of the space engines involved. In Homeworld, they only needed to simulate a small chunk of space; ergo, the stars and planets were rendered as part of the skybox, and you could do all kinds of neat cloud-in-front-of-the-sun effects and whatnot. In EVE, planetoids and suns are proper stellar objects. You'd need actual clouds of sufficient size to achieve similar effects in EVE, and they'd only be seen from certain angles.
I think the simplest thing to do would just be to create more constellation backgrounds and seed them into the game.
EDIT: gorg, I need to get my forums alt going on this account

true, but look at freelancer with it`s giant gas clouds/pockets in some places
damn things didn`t even add the slightest lag while our clouds are worse then 100 cans litting the sky ________________ I don't DO graphics, here's a sig anyway, wubwoo - Cortes lol thanks :-) |

I'm not about to argue that EVE's volumetric fog routines don't need some TLC.
But getting shots like this is going to be damned hard no matter how well the engine is coded, just due to the fact that the local star is a stellar object and not a static part of the background.

the majority of space is black, what's wrong with black and a tad of color here and there? surely it shouldn't be the other way around aka alot of color and a tad black here and there?

absolutely. what I'd like is the nebulae to be accents, points of pattern in an otherwise black void in many places. that would be quite gorgeous, I think. then again, I'm an old goth. I just want eve to match my wardrobe :)

I think the backgrounds are already to bright and too busy. I have trouble seeing my overview and my controls at times when these huge swatches of brightly glowing space stuff are in the background. It makes me constantly swing my camera around to get a clear look at my HUD. More subtle and transparent nebulae are what I'd like to see.

Nebulae rock. This one looks like a baby in a womb (the baby being the blue part). And this one looks like goatse :D.

erm... I'll take 50mg's of whatever recreational pharmeceutical you've taken to see the baby in the top one.
and as for the secon-ARGH! MY EYES! MY EYES! *dies* let's not go there. really. it's bad enough the thought of being six inches in the christmas islands, yet alone 6 light-years across in space
but swiftly moving back onto subject, yes, definately, more backgrounds, variation, and importantly... not every system being in the same shaped gas shell that does block the UI regularly.... *tries to get the topic away from nyphur's twisted imagination, fast*

The best backdrop ever would be DARK space. I hate the unrealistically bright cloud crap.

x2 was like that. It was the darkest game I think I've ever played. Really kills the mood imo.

dark background with lots of stars gives a much better impression of how huge space is, instead of this bright orange/pink/blue/brown nebulae thingie that seems to engulf almost every single system in eve

Give us the option to disable nebuli rather than forcing me to have no transparency on the UI because a horribly bright nebula can make my UI invisiblt at a critical time, otherwise.

Yes, black cold space with sharp edges and unblinking stars as hard points of light. Kinda like what space actually looks like.
With a fiew nebulae to give occasional color.
