This is a serious issue.
When you've become a character that can easily handle the high sec rats with closed eyes (such as me and most of my buddies) but are not able to defend against ZOMGWTFBBQPWN - 2 year old characters with a billion of SP, you can do exactly NO interesting ratting anymore.
So, please CCP, give us "intermediate grade" players a little more incentive for freestyle ratting.

Well you would think that the risk vs. reward where NPC rats are concerned would be the toughness of them being offset by the price, not having to dodge prats while you're just trying to engage NPC's. It's also a pirate fav to warp in after someone is half way through a battle with 2 or more NPC's and it's **** annoying to be honest. ------------------

Yeah, this is my opinion too.
The problem is not "risk vs. reward", the problem is, that the risk in lowsec is so much higher than in highsec - the reward simply doesn't cover it.

No, there is no risk in killing NPC rats, it's a cash farming activity on its own. Warp jammer NPC belt spawns are one in a thousand since RMR and one WCS always lets you warp out the second things turn bad.
Without PvP danger it would be as much an ISK farming activity as macro mining.

You are playing the wrong game. If you want to do your thing without getting interaction from other players then you really should look into freelancer or other offline singleplayer games.
On the other hand I agree that there should be more rewards in low sec. I try to pirate there and I must admit there aside from the occasional new player there are hardly any good targets there. I cant blame them, cause there's absolutely no good reason to go to low-sec empire at the moment. You want cash you just do the missions and if you want to mine you either stay in highsec or go to 0.0 alliance space.

How can having the chance to fight the sort of rats you only normally see in 0.0 while being in 1.0 or 0.9 sec space be nerfed ?
Just cos you cant be bothered to train the skills for missions higher than lvl 1 or put in a week of grind to get to a higher lvl agent.
Highsec space is were most of the really expensive mods get sold. Work it out.

You suck. Learn to use the map so you can find 'pass through' station-less systems. People and pirates will not stick around for long, its very hard to keep a proloned camp, or gank squad supplied in areas like that. Look fir low travel and low ship/pod kill systems. The topic creator needs to use the map tool also.
I've been ganked a few times, but normaly I am left alone by pirates. I normaly try to start a converstion in local with them. Get alot of good tips and find some freindly people. - - - - I can't spell, don't tell me I already know. Spellcheck: |

There are always kill missions ofc.....
But do yourself a favour and get into a decent corp and move to low sec for a while - it's a good stepping stone to 0.0 and it's not as bad as people make out. I spend 90% of my time in low sec and have done from about 2 months of playing this game. You'll probably get killed a few times at the start - but you'll soon learn and you might find you enjoy the pvp aspects of the game.
The rats are tougher but not much tougher so kit out a cheap cruiser get some insurance and you won't lose much if you die. You'll make more on loot and bounties than you will lose by being killed.
Try some of the lvl 4 agent areas in low sec - there tend to be a lot of non-pirates about (as well as pirates ofc) and you'll find a decent market for buying ammo etc. The majority of people in low sec don't shoot people randomly - just check local and the sec status of the people that come into your system.

No, I'm not. I want interaction from other players or I wouldn't be paying for this game. What I would like is to be able to take on some relatively challenging NPC's without risking some prat and 4 of his mates jumping in when half my shield tank is gone and finishing me off. If pirates actually attacked 1 on 1 I wouldn't have any problems ratting on low sec, but they rarely or never do.
Sargemonkey, not sure if I should even respond to you because of your 12 year old beginning to your reply. Anyway, obviously you've been lucky, or you just dont mind doing 25 jump routes to get to where you want. ------------------

0.6 + 0.5 systems should offer more challange to intermediate level players, itll actually decrease the amount of mining carbears imo. and better the quality of future corporations as they work together better to mine the belts at the "rims".

NPCing in 0.1-0.4 imo is rediculously easy. Watch local, stay aligned, (stab the hell out of your ship) and you shouldn't have any issues with people blowing you up.
The rewards in 0.1-0.4 are fine, it's just .5+ are too rewarding. Look @ maps, there are plenty of 0.1-0.4 systems that are out of the way. Getting ganked in a 0.4 isn't CCP's fault, I believe it's your own fault for not using the tools they provided for you (local, stabs, map to look for kills in last hour, etc.). --- OMG NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want to fight high end rats, you currently have two options:
- Run level 4 combat missions. These can be done in any security space, although they give better rewards in lower security space. If you really want to avoid every chance of PvP, you could run these missions in high security space.
- Go to 0.0 and hunt NPC pirates. This is riskier, but not all that hard to do. You could either join an alliance with access to 0.0 space, allowing you to rat with very little risk as long as you watch local. If you don't want this, use an alt scout or get someone in a tech I frigate to scout for you. You can easily get into 0.0 space this way and hunt rats with relatively little risk (once again, local is your friend).
Also, if you have 'buddies', you should be able to defend yourself in most situations. In EVE, power often comes in numbers. A billion SP doesn't make you uber, and it certainly doesn't protect you from teh blob.
There isn't any need to add more high end content for empire players. Level 4 missions were nerfed for this very reason: to force people who want more rewards and high end content to go to lower security space. Risk vs reward .

The people do have a point. Once you actually talk to someone about how to avoid being pie-rated it's very easy to no longer die.
And safety does come in numbers. If someone warps in on 3 or 4 Cruisers they're not going to stick around.
Find a cushy 0.2 and rat to to your hearts content. Stay with your group and yo'll be fine. Please only use English in your signature graphic - Jacques([email protected]) |

Let's get this straight once for all . EVE isn't a PVP game. The beauty about the eve system is that you can be anything you want. You can mine , research , trade , agent ***** , PVP and whatever more ... Nowhere in the fora nor the description of this game does it state that it's merely a PVP game.
In short , you can do anything you want within the game environment , and EVE is not a PVP game by definition . Different characters have different professions, and do different stuff. The player fills out the role she/he wants to fullfill ...Please stop calling eve a PVP-only game...

Originally by: Salmonella Let's get this straight once for all . EVE isn't a PVP game.
EVE's focus is on player interaction and competition between players.
Quote: The beauty about the eve system is that you can be anything you want. You can mine
As you mine, you are competing with other players to sell your wares or minerals.
Quote: , research
Researching is hardly a profession of its own, but at any rate, it involves competing with other players.
Quote: , trade
This is probably the most "PVP"-esque profession in EVE. Trading involves competing with other players constantly, whether you trade NPC trade goods or player goods.
Quote: , agent *****
This really is the only exception. Agent missions involve little to no player interaction.
Although EVE does not require anyone to fight another player in combat, but the moment you buy a single item off the market, you are competing with another player. EVE is not meant to be a single player game.

when your skills are high enough to warrant fighting the rats found in low security systems then you have sufficient skills to PvP. Don't say you just get ganked constantly because you don't if you have the slightest bit of common sense.
I'm not a particularly old player, but by keeping my wits about me, checking local, scanning, avoiding enemies which can own me, using scouts etc. I tend to stay alive plenty enough. I'm not saying I don't get owned, I just manage to avoid it more often than not. getting the c*** shot out of me, then blasting the s*** out of someone else is the way I play this game.
whatsmore I find it makes better profit to PvP rather than PvE, as people tend to have nice things you can sell, or you can ransom them, and its a damnsite more fun :)
become a pie rat, its jolly good fun :)

I've lived the entirety of my four-month gaming life in low-sec, in one of the most heavily-pirated regions of the game, and I've never been podded. Lost a few ships, but I've still got the same body I was born with. I'm an anti-pirater and trader, and I've taken several trips to 0.0 and got home safely. If I can live the low-sec life and survive, then so can you, and if I can lose ships to pirates without whining like a baby then you can also.
This is not a serious issue. If you seriously want to massacre huge quantities of NPC rats and never risk death yourself then you're a joke. CCP should take more NPCs *out* of high-sec to discourage this kind of wimpy stupidity. |

Edited by: Ernest Graefenberg on 02/04/2006 13:26:40 I don't get the deal with the millions+ of SPs is. Pack a bunch of multispecs, Sensordamps or what-have-you (ECM drones ftw) and and you'll negate lots and lots of skillpoints.
EvE hands you the tools to scoop out systems for major camps quickly - if worse comes to worse, sit at the gate and wait for some shuttle to fly through, ask him for a rapport. Avoiding beltganks is easy with the help of your scanner and local, and not being chased out of belts by every idiot is even easier with a bit of chutzpah. Having 20%-40% more firepower on the same ship, or a bigger ship, isn't going to help mister solo pirate if you're properly prepared by doing your homework (our friends scanner/local again - the same tools that make it even easier to avoid being massively ganked).
I've lost a single ship the last few weeks to low security PvP, and thats to both a silly bug (didn't get any jumpcloak) and a scout with some identification problems (turns out those 'battlecruisers' were tempests) - so a bout of bad luck. I've just crossed 2 million SP (2 months of play) and haven't really specialized.
Just a day ago or so two 3 year old, all tech2 kitted Thoraxes tried to gank me in a belt. Ended up being a killmail and about 5 million isk in loot richer for the experience. Forgot to scramble the other one quickly enough :(
So anyway. Grow a sack. Shoot people that look at you funny.

I do not think that an implant(worth 40M average) or a skillbook(worth 90-100M) for every 15K lp on a lvl 3 agent that you can chain missions AFK in a BS,is calling for a ¦¦unnerf`` --------- Ninja1= Pirate tactics are to board our ships, kill everyone onboard and steal our treasures Ninja2= But...we dont have any ships Ninja1= Yes,that gives us a significant advantage

Edited by: Ripline on 02/04/2006 15:46:52 If you've been around for a while the balance between high sec and low sec/0.0 seems to be far better now than it was. We've already been to the "unnerfed high sec" and it just plain didn't work. For the newer people that would be pre-nerf level 4 missions. Like getting cash shot at you with a firehose with minimal risk for anyone competent.
Going by a collective "voting-with-their-feet" count the balance is decent enough these days (as evidenced by the constantly increasing 0.0 population density), swinging it back towards high sec would be a mistake. And best defense against any player pirates is situational awareness, generally. The game favors someone trying to escape over the hunter, as would be best demonstrated by the heart rending nonstop cry-me-river style whingeing about warp core stabs.
To make a long story short, high end game happens in the wild blue yonder of 0.0 if you've observed the trend. Mining always did, now even manufacturing is following (notice the bigger capital ships. needs system sovereignty, ie 0.0).

Question is:
When in 0.2, ratting in a belt, pirate comes, locks + scrambles you and kills you with his missiles in 3 seconds...
...what options do people have?

A. You rat in a quiet system and/or keep an eye on local and scanner. You warp to a safespot the moment you see someone who might threathen you B. You make sure you are aligned most of the time or at the very least you keep an eye on your overview at all times. When someone enters your belt, you warp away. Unless they get lucky and land right within scrambler range and you have a slow ship, you will get away C. You fit your ship decently so it doesn't die in 3 seconds when someone attacks it D. You bring friends E. You whine on the forums

Try Sharuveil, its a great place to rat.. low sec, no stations, tons of belts, very few people in local.
Of course now I'm going to go camp that system with all of my m8s and wait for you to come so I can gank you.
Just kidding :D

Hey now, dont you whine about the profits of Mission running, those sweet mods you get after pwning someone have to come from somewhere. Mining and Missions are the two primary starting points for money in all of EvE, and I am quite impressed with how they worked how it trickles down... Its just like in nature, when something eats something else it gets about 10% of the nutrients that the previous creature had, in this, you kill a ship you get about 10% of what was on it and the value of the ship itself :)
