Everyone has those moments where they say to themselves, "Only in eve", in that synical yet endeering way. Today was one of those for me.
After finishing up a nice set of operations we get a very odd report from one of our scouts. He keeps saying over TS "I have a Charon class freighter, en-route to Amod". At first we were all kind of shocked since the only freighters that ever come to Amod are our own under heavy escort.
The scout continues to trail the freighter and confirms that it has no escort and is non-responsive to requests to identify itself and its cargo. We have been aware of several of our major enemies need to re-supply after recent losses, so we make the decision that the freighter must be neutralized.
We set up an Ambush at the Akila stargate in Amod and wait patiently for it to arrive. We brought a cargo scanner to check his hold. Immediatly after the freighter jumps through and sees the battleships waiting at the gate he convos the scout that had been trying to establish contact and begs not to be killed. He claims that he has a cargo hold full of Tritanium.
We hold fire on the freighter half way through it's structure and and wait for confirmation of his manifest. The pilot running the scan starts to read off the items on board the freighter and what a suprise. "His hold has a small portion of tritanium, HACs, interceptors, assualt frigates, and T2 gear."
I convo the pilot and very clearly explain to him that he is dead, when suddenly he offers to eject if we pay him something for the ship because it isn't insured. I make an offer of 300mil and he accepts. Personally, I assumed he was just stalling for time but then... he ejects...
You should have heard the chatter on TeamSpeak... The term shocked barely describes it. The pilot was then told to leave system which he promptly does. I assure him he will be paid once the ship is docked.
Then began the long process of finding a pilot, and bringing in remote armor reps to repair the ship. We spent at least 10 minutes tanking the gate guns and gaurding our new ship. After finally making contact with a pilot we knew we could trust and getting the remote armor rep team en-route... there is a big flash of light and the freighter is gone...
We confirmed that no one had fired on it, it had 70% shields and 25%+ structure, and for whatever reason it just went boom... I don't think I need to explain how we felt, so I will just end this story with...
Only in eve...

No we told him he would be paid once the ship was in dock. How long does it take to self-destruct a capital ship?
We waited the 120 seconds out thinking that is what he had done. The ship didn't go boom until about 10 minutes after he ejected.
On another funny note he convoed me and thanked me for being true to our word right after it exploded. Apparently the default insurance payout is 309 mil, so he thought we had docked it and paid him...

Edited by: Ben Doon on 03/04/2006 11:03:38 I'm a bit lost here guys,if he didnt set it to self destruct then why did it explode??
If the pilot set the self distruct then usually you should get a little information box thingy pop up on you're screen telling you he had started the self destruct sequence.
Did the sentry guns fire on it because you guys were flagged and you were aiding the ship by repairing it therefore flagging that ship too??
Bad luck on losing the $$$ btw,but hey sh1t happens

Selfdestruct messages appear in your logs when the other person initiates it. Doesn't explain the ten minute delay thing, it's two minutes and there is a sixty second delay after you initiate selfdestruct before you can eject (you get some message about sitting back and waiting for the fireworks :) ), so that cuts it down to one minute.
Bit rubbish that, such good luck then such bad luck. Much survive in loot?

That would be it...Remote Reps on a ship that isnt being polited by your corp will result in ship destruction if you are near sentry guns.
At least, I seem to remember something else like this happening.

Kinda odd that it would have 70% shield when it exploded. --------------- My views do not reflect the views of my corp, or my own views. |

Yeah as suggested, I'd think that remote repping by someone who was flagged may have caused the sentries to turn on the freighter too.
Not sure if that works, but sounds plausible enough.

Once I ejected from my ship and I got the message "Are you Sure? Sometimes the pilots skills is the only thing holding the ship together." Maybe it had something to do with that. ExCav Recruitment |

Yeah, but blowing up 10 mins after the ejections, and with armour and shield? Seems really wierd.

Nope, nobody got to remote rep it before it exploded. We had non-flagged people coming to do that. We weren't sure how the sentries would like a flagged person doing that.
In regards to the war it has been up and down for both sides. We figured it was their supplies.
I mean seriously why does a freighter full of T2 ships and gear go deep into low sec?

After checking logs we confirmed that no self destruct message appeared, it was a good 10 minutes before it went pop and no reps were activated on it. One of those random things i'm guessing. i believe it has been petitioned so we'll have to see what they say. apparently i got the final blow on it but unless nos can take out 70% shields then i'm confused. :(
and a lesson to the freighter pilot in low sec. If stopped, tell the truth about your cargo, ship scanners are very easy things to grab :)

Maybe it was the Cursed Frighter of Blageedorm, a frighter, it is said, that is filled with all the most wonderfull things in the world but, it is said, that he who takes possesion of this cursed ship, however fleetingly, is doomed to drown in tears of their own making.
It is said.
