I like to think outside the box. Keep that in mind as I ask my question:
You claim you used a silent, vibrating alarm of some kind in order to wake you up. Most of the time putting that on a desk would rattle and wake the wife, and most people roll around so you couldn't chance it being near you. Or worse, it'd wake the wife up who'd wonder why you were setting an alarm at that hour. So I ask:
Where did you stick/tape/cram whatever it was that woke you up so you could be assured it would be able to get your attention?

It sounds to me like a lot of you guys are with women who aren't open minded to this sort of thing! Been there, done that... will never date a chick who wouldn't support my own hobbies, when she expects me to support hers, again.

There are only a couple of places guaranteed to work I suppose.

I saw a squirrel today jumping from one tree to another, the branch it landed on snapped. So the squirrel was on this falling branch, clambering like mad, thinking it was doing something about it.'

I've done this quite a few times, its no big deal for me, I have no problem getting back to sleep and most of the time the next day I cant even remember that it happened, its almost like I have a clone that does it for me, oh dear...

Do like me, have all the servers in the bedroom, that way turning on your gamining station won't even be noticed as the buzz coming from the server already makes the noise of a nuclear power plant.
And in addition to that the 120mm fans dries your hair in seconds after the morning shower.
Do I get up in the middle of the night to change skill? Nope, usually I head to bed after the skill has completed.
I refuse to be called addictive, I do occasionaly meet my friends so I can't be addictive...

Another interesting fact about large fans.
They hurt when in the middle of a skill change in the early morning you manage to shove your hand through the unguarded 92mm Vantec Tornado. OW was about the 4th word that came out of my mouth. Well, not quite... You see, my new GF has no issues with my playing EvE except when she wants some nookie... which, coincidentally, is when I don't mind NOT playing EvE. Don't mind me... I'm just a pigment of your imagination. |

I schedule all activities (besides work) AROUND my training schedule, including sleep. I just make sure there is a long skill training during my work hours.
Addicted? maybe...
I prefer to say , since the skill training is time based, that I am getting my money's worth by not allowing any training down time.

I was on a Cisco course recently in London and realised that a 31 day skill (Tactical Shield Manipulation Lvl 5)was due to finish on the Thursday, whilst I would not be home until the Friday evening.
The PC's in the classroom, whilst good fast machines all had on-board Intel video chips, so I knew that I would have zero chance of getting EVE to run.
I persuaded the tutor to allow me to install the client on his high-end laptop, he was so impressed with the game that he took on a trial subscription , we even had it running on the in-class projector for an hour over the Thursday lunch break!

There is one place it can go so that if it does wake the gf, she won't complain. If it doesn't wake her, at least you wake up with a smile on your face.
I made the decision to leave the wife because she wanted to play on her PC all day but wouldn't let me go near mine without giving me a load of verbal. If there ever is another gf I'll try to get her involved in the game. If that doesn't work, I'll be a gentleman and escort her to the door.

what's sadder is when you and the GF are getting up at 4 in the morning to swap skills....
now that's when you know it's tragic... and yes, we're guilty of that.

I remember reading a report of a player who had sucessfully logged into Eve in the middle of the night to change a skill. On further reading it transpired that at the time he was onboard a Singapore Airlines 747 flying between Singapore and London, with the rest of the people in the cabin asleep around him, using the then new Boeing Connexion Wireless network onboard the plane to login and play Eve on his laptop.

My fiance likes WoW (as do I). She likes to look at EVE when I'm playing, but she says there's just too much information on the screen at once for her (though she's starting to like mining and flying around for me while I go get her ice cream or something at the store). She laughed the first time I set my alarm to wake me up in the middle of the night to change my skill over after finishing Shield Management 4, and I said, "I didn't create the skill system, I just don't want to wait till tomorrow evening to finish the skill."
She shut off my alarm 5 minutes early, went into the other room and changed my skill over for me without waking me up. That's love.
Got nothing to do with being addicted, it's just accepting the way the skills work. If they allow us to split training between two skills in the future, cool, but if not, I'll get up in the middle of the night to change a skill over, because I'm not sacrificing my morales, just a few minutes of sleep.

Originally by: Gungankllr I train super long skills when I'm sleeping and at work, and short ones when I'm online and active.
Only problem is, I have all these long-ass skills all sitting at like 80% because they'll end while I'm aslep and my brain can't process skill downtime

heh same as
need to find time to finish off those 4/5hr remaining ones sometime :P

I have never once gotten up purely to change a skill, and I've been playing this game rather obsessively since October of 2004.
Now, I HAVE spent many nights staying awake until ridiculous hours, but that's about 10% because of EVE and 90% because I have sleeping problems, so I'm awake anyway.
The great thing about my laptop is that it's really tiny (2.5 pounds), so it's great for using it on my lap (whether it's in bed or on a couch), and it has no cooling fan at all, so it's 100% silent. My ex-girlfriend was actually quite happy to curl up next to me with her head under my right arm and go to sleep while I sat there reading/writing on the forums. -------- Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk [04:21:15] Mebrithiel Ju'wien > Nik's bio 4tw btw [07:38:53] Graelyn > Nikolai for Dev 108!
