Originally by: BH Runner I remember reading a report of a player who had sucessfully logged into Eve in the middle of the night to change a skill. On further reading it transpired that at the time he was onboard a Singapore Airlines 747 flying between Singapore and London, with the rest of the people in the cabin asleep around him, using the then new Boeing Connexion Wireless network onboard the plane to login and play Eve on his laptop.
Dunno about that one, but I know this one: Playing EVE while sitting at a bar in Bombay (=Mumbai) International airport, India.
I was a n00b back then, I was there for my work with some colleagues, waiting for my flight and I was bored. I had my laptop with EVE with me. I was sitting at a bar (or something that was supposed to resemble a bar at any rate) outside the international area. Someone had left their wireless LAN wide open and I got on the internet and logged on to EVE. It worked, but it was a tad laggy. Switched skills, checked my wallet and then checked my mail. A bit later on we started scanning the IP range of the LAN and we ultimately ended up on what looked like the airport security & customs intranet site.... We logged off real quick at that point.
PS: Funny anecdote: They had a room in the international area next to a small police/customs office which had a sign on it that said 'Incrimination and Persuasion room'. That had a somewhat ominous ring to it... I hope it was just incorrect translation...

I am utterly surprised that this many players actually have partners. I would've thought otherwise. Or, perhaps I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say perhaps just the people who don't wouldn't post
I've missed whole days. Common thing, I set a short new lvl1 skill planning to change or wait till it finishes before going to bed, but forget and lose the whole next day (because I get up at 5am for work and CBF logging into EVE at that time, stuff that).

Nothing leaves me feeling quite so empty as logging on and suddenly realising I forgot to set a skill the night before, and that for the past 16 hours or so I havnt been training anything...
It's a dirty, dirty feeling.

Set alarm to skill switch? No. I can switch to a long skill, so that's not an issue.
Woke up at 5am before work, to go grab some stuff from 0.0? Yes. Woke up at 6am on a Sunday because we had an outpost to put up? Yes.
Got back from fanfest, absolutely shattered, and found that Marganis was being put up, but we'd missed sunday D/T so had to 'guard' until the next day, and sort of stayed awake until launch? Erm. Yeah.
*shrug*.

When I'm with my GF, I don't have EVE access which helps big time. Don't know what would happen if I did.
Never left bed for a skill change though. at almost 40mil sp now. 1 day of training really doesn't matter much, and I can plan it around my RL normally. ~{When evil and strange get together anything is possible}~ A tool is only useless when you don't know how to use it. - ActiveX The grass is always greener on the other side. - JoCool |

I recently got out of Hospital, just as I was coming around from being unconscious after routine surgery I looked up to see the one of the nurses leaning over me giving me something to bring me around... My first question on being able to speak again was "What system am I in?" I had been playing a lot of Eve just before I went in and was still very "not with it" after the anesthesia.
I look back and LOL
I would have felt mory silly if i hadn't set a long skill before i went in

I try to avoid it using the "swap short finishing skill for long skill during the night" method but it doesn't always work, distractions at last minute are funny. Atleast I don't have to get up that often anymore with all skills finishing weeks if not months apart.

I crept out of bed at 0617 Evetime this morning (i'm in UK) and swapped skill to Eidectic memory 2. Training time 2hrs 54 mins.
"That will leave me plenty of time to switch to another skill before downtime, and when I have to go to work".
I crept back to bed. WOke up 4 hours later, mid downtime, late for work. Here I am now, at my office desk, kicking myself in the knowledge that my character is sitting doing nothing for the next 12 hrs. Its a dirty dirty feeling as someone above said.
If only *I* had eidetic memory.

problems like this dont bother me as my GF plays eve as well and it has been known that i get a punch to wake up and change her skills along with my own
it also helps that my PC is right next to my bed and her just across the room on the other wall

Changing skills at outrageous hours is quite all right if you have waited 18-30 days for a skill to reach lvl 5 so you can use that cool new T2 mod.
My GF doesn't mind me changing skills or even playing eve right after sex, because in her opinion, she finds it better me addicted to something she can see and likes, then another woman :P

Im useualy training about 2 skills at the same time, so when one might run out dureing the night, i'll start the one i was planning on after it, then carry on with the orignal skill when i wake up or somthing.
Although there has be occations iv forgoten to do this, and woken up (on my own accord) at 2AM in a cold sweat remebering that somthing like Heavy assualt ship level 4 runs out in 40 mins. Iv also remembered to change skills at 3AM, compleatly blazeing after a night out, kabab in one hand, mouse in the other.
I personaly do think thats a good sign.

A lot of people in this thread have brought up girlfriends or wives that can't tolerate you getting up in the night to change skills.
IMO, if she is that worried about 15 minutes of your sleep, theres something wrong ><

Amen to that. That's EXACTLY my new GF's outlook on things. Seems to work better for me, too! Don't mind me... I'm just a pigment of your imagination. |

I'm pretty surprised that they haven't already implemented queued skill system yet... They do have it on the Drawingboard, though. _

And have all of us addicts return to normal sleep patterns? The caffine market would collapse. Wars would break out. And worst, people would turn up for work on time ______________________

On a more serious note about getting up to switch a skill would be a sign of addiction:
If I get out of bed at 4 in the morning to go fishing, would that make that make me a fishing addict?
Only if gaming is there to avoid confrontation with RL isues one might speak of an addiction and you could argue how bad an addiction Eve is if one functions normal at work and such. Wives and GF's having problems with their spouses interest is with all hobbies that take alot of time. IMHO a relation that breaks up over that is probably bound to die over something else in the future anyway (how hard that may sound)
For me Eve is a combination of a "serious" hobby and the social structure a hobby club would provide in a RL scenario. My wife accepts this, and I accept it when she wants me for herself an (non)EvEning. I rather lose skilltime then sleep so that's a non issue for me.
PS: Virtual vs. Real:
An English study with elderly people that were socially isolated for various reasons showed that a virtual dog (an Aibo) gives about the same feeling of togetherness and "being needed" then a real pet would. Reality is probably a projection of our own mind after all

Getting up early enough to change a skill right before DT, sure. Getting up in the middle of the night, erh, hhmm, don't think I have.
The other half has gotten quite adept at logging in and changing skills for me. She hasn't a clue how to do anything else in EVE, but she sure knows her way around my skill tree.

Edited by: Snake Jankins on 07/04/2006 20:55:19 I've got a heart for new players and let them catch up.
This thread reminds me to check skills again. At the moment I only know that the training of one skill isn't completed, mini bs 5, but the skills of my other chars could be complete. Maybe some already yesterday ? Don't know when I started them / checked them last. Can't even exactly name the skills. ___________ 'Only ships can be assembled, this is a Frigate.' |
