Looks like about the same training time and ISK cost for each of them, so which do I go for? I'm Caldari and still solo for now, and this would mainly fill the role of "something to use until I get higher ships". And which of the four ships is the best one?

consider that interceptors lead to interdictors and assault ships to HACs... I personally prefer inties but I'm amarr
if you just want some cool toys, either will do really, especially if your goal is BS only, rather than HAC or interdictor... caldari has decent ships in both categories (far more so than amarr)
having said that the harpy is just dead sexy (assault frig)

Interceptors are very fun :)
Crows are awesome solo ships also.

Interceptors totally suck when you are still new to them. They only become amazing ships once you fly them for a while. Unless you have the patience to let yourself become better with them, Assault Ships will give you results much quicker. -------------------------------

inties are harder to fly (player skill wise, not SP wise) but are much better for PvP AFs take less skill to fly and are better for PvE

HippoKing, I must disagree with you.
With the new AF boost certain AF's are going to become pvp kings, think about the hawk one-salvoing most Ceptors with TII ammo + launchers. ---------------------------------

That's pretty much it... my long term goal is recon ships/stealth bombers, someday getting a command ship. At least in terms of T2 stuff, I'm sure I'll pick up a standard BS/BC eventually as well. But until then, I want something fun and useful to fly, and both assault frigates and interceptors look like they'd fill that role nicely. I just don't know which one to give the time and ISK to.

Do it the other way around. That way while you're laboring your way through Evasive Maneuvering V you've already got Eng and Mechanic V, two very useful skills to have.

I agree. The skills required for both are all usefull and you'd want to train them eventually.

Actually light missiles travel even without ship bonuses up to 5625m/s iirc. It's also pretty likely that hawk will be getting a 10% per level missile velocity bonus, which would boost it to 8437.5m/s with maxed skills.

Yeah when it's not webbed or dual webbed Basically in fleet combat interceptors can be more useful then AF. But AF works very well too as a bit heavier tackler and in eliminating enemy interceptors. A properly setup AF eats interceptors for lunch. ROA Forums |

base speed on light missiles is 3750.
there is a skill which increases that 10% per level
Crow has a ship bonus of 10% per level too

i do find it slightly disturbing that noone at ccp has realised the missile hawk is most likely going to be disgustingly overpowered and require little to no skill to fly. Keep profanity & moderation discussion out of your sig, please. --Jorauk ISD USE HAX AND SPLOITS |

It's not even out yet. The only 2 stats we can see about it are placeholders.
Maybe we could give the Dev Team some time to actually make the ship before we start complaining ?
And I don't think that Frigate 5 plus the bunch of support skills needed to fly an AF without risking to loose it at every corner is "little to no skill", we won't see 4-days noobs in Hawks ravaging the galaxy anytime soon ...

Basically what are you gonna do with it ? PvE, go AF.. You wont have that much use for a AF in PvP even with the new changes. At some point you will realise that you need a ceptor, they are great for PvP and getting around fast.

T2 ammo and missiles are going to get fixed (supposedly), and unless the Hawk gets as much/more of a damage boost to missiles than a kestrel, and an explosion size reduction bonus, I don't see them taking down inties with a single salvo.
A rocket Hawk will atleast rightfully pwn probably any inty that decides togo toe to toe with it, as it should be.

I really fail to see how becuase one ship will wipe the floor with another ship it is unbalanced. It is only when one ship wipes the floor with multiple ship classes that I get worried. So a Hawk will probably wipe the floor with an intie? so what? I can setup a cormorat that makes inites cry for mommie if the engament starts out at 100km. The cormorat is a tech I ship to.... I am sure that there will be setups for ships that will tear the new hawk a new one also. You can't balance ships 1 vs 1 becuase combat power and force projection are not linear. 1 intie vs 1 caracal, the intie will almost certainly win. 4 inties vs 4 caracals? if the caracals lose, they need to be podded until they start losing attribs. You aren't special, I hate everyone. |

I plan on getting the skills to fly both. They use many of the same skill areas (small weapon spec, high nav skills, etc) and are both fairly cheap.

Thanks for the comments... looks like a Hawk for now, if any of them. But now that I've moved on to a Caracal, I'm finding the long-range heavy missiles make the level II missions pretty easy so far. So, I'm not sure the 20 million ISK + equipment and two weeks of training time would be worth it. How much of an upgrade in combat power for PvE is a Hawk really going to be?

Good quote.
Personally, I like the kickass resists on AFs over the speed of inties.
