Over the past few weeks I have been working on a new EVE Character Manager. I wanted an application that could download my character XML files and give me time estimates on how long it would take to train a specific skill or fly a specific ship. As my application matured, I decided to clean it up and release it.
Available to the first time is the EVE Character Manager.
-- Features -- - Manage multiple characters across multiple accounts. - Automatically download and import your character XML files from the EVE website. - Fully honors the EVE skill prerequisite tree in time estimates. - Single click to see how long it will take to train all the skills to fly any type of ship. - Build custom skill targets with any skills available in the game and save these targets for future use.
-- Future Plans -- - Ship Comparison Database - Item Database for 1-click time estimates on any item in the game. - Community Driven Features
Screenshot of the main screen:
Here is the file for download: Download Installer
-- Getting Started -- 1. Define a profile. - Name the profile whatever you want. - The username and password are the same you use to access the eve-online profiles. - The charid is the id for the character you want to manage. You can get this id by logging into your character via the eve website and getting the number in the address bar. (See below for an example)
2. Click "Update" on the top right, this will download the latest XML from the eve website.
3. Select the ship you want to view. Your ready to go! -- Char ID Example -- When I log into the EVE website, and view the skill tree for this character, this URL is in the address bar: myeve.eve-online.com/character/skilltree.asp?characterID=190309783
The number 190309783 is the character ID that must be used in the Character Manager to retrieve your XML file.
-- Licensing -- After you play with the Character Manager, you will notice that some features are not available without a license. Licenses can be obtained in two ways.
-- Personal License First is a personal license, a personal license is 20 Million ISK, and entitles you to unlimited access to the program. This type of account is tied to a specific character name. You must provide the account information for that account so that the XML can be downloaded, and the character name verified.
-- Corporate License A corporate license can be purchased by a corporation, and it will cover all members of that corporation, a corp license is priced at 10 Million ISK times the number of members in the corp. The license will require you to specify a character that is a member of that corp.
-- Pricing Flexibility I will be examining the pricing based on how high the demand is, stay tuned for pricing updates. The community feedback will tell the story. Some people like to mine, some like to run missions, I like to write code.
-- Account Information Security -- This is by far the most important part of this post! I would like to call on some of the IT nerds who are members of the EVE community to verify that this program exchanges data securely with the EVE web servers, and makes absolutely no attempts to transmit the data anywhere else. Your account information is used to download your latest character data automatically.
-- Manual Profile Updates -- You may choose not to enter account information when defining a profile. When you update your character, it will prompt you to select a skill xml file from your computer. You must download your character's skill XML manually if you wish to use this feature.
Feedback is always appreciated. If you have any problems, please post them here. You may send me evemail if you wish to purchase a license.

Other 3rd party character managers do the same thing, you don't have to use it, its just convenient. Hopefully there are some real IT nerds out there who will sniff it and give me some outside validation that I am not making any attempt to collect the data myself.

sorry to break it to you m8 but there is a much more polished and feature rich character manager already available for free, not to knock the hard work you put in or anything, check it out at http://www.eve-ffet.com/

I will make this very clear:
This program is in no way associated to the FREE EVE Character Manager and EVE Management Suite.
I also have a big issue with you calling this product the same thing as the ECM as they are not related and you are looking to make money out of it.
You will be hearing from FutureFalcon again very shortly, most likely asking you to change the name of your program. The ECM is still around and in use so there is no excuse for the exact name. ___

THIS PROGRAM IS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FREE VERSION OF EVE CHARACTER MANAGER PROVIDED BY FUTURE FALCON EVE TOOLS
Yes I am shouting, because I don't want our name associated with this. As Yeggstry has requested, please change the program name as EVE Character Manager by FFET has been going since October 2004 and never went away.

Initial feedback:
1. OK, i've got a naming problem, I'll come up with a new name so there is less confusion with the program from eve-fft.
2. Remove license fee. This program was started out of my need to learn .NET for work, and one of things I had to develop was some form of licensing, so I figured I may as well try to apply it here... Didn't work so well it seems. I'll put out a version later today with no licnesing.

Wow, I was under the impression that people here were friendly. Give the guy a break. Look at all of the .coms and .nets with the same domain name, but different companies. You don't see them complaining about everything, do you?
I don't exactly think that the name can be licensed by anyone either, because it does contain EVE in it, which would technically make it owned by CCP, no? The name is also pretty descriptive, gotta give the guy a break there for using common sense when naming his programs.
Also, I don't use FFET anymore because the character manager itself it broken. I may be up for using it when you finally integrate it with that second piece of software.

They do complain when someone tries to use similar product name; you just don't hear about them.
It looks there was real chance for confusion due the name. Like a newbie in corp seeing this thread and thinking 'my mates said ECM is a must, gotta buy it from this guy'.
Also, if you read whole thread, you notice how friendly folks turned after the OP understood their concerns and acted accordingly.

We've already started integrating it. You might want to try checking our website and forums for the details and to ask any questions you have The main problem you may have is downloading the character information which is the main purpose of the EMS atm :P
As for your question about copyright, you only need to look at the continuing battle between Apple the computer and Apple the music label (label of the Beatles), and also the Microsoft action against Mike Rowe for his website - see here for details: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/01/19/microsoft_lawyers_threaten_mike_rowe/ ___

Very nice tool. FFET's CM has not been able to update for me, so playing around with a new tool is welcome.
Unfortunately, with .net 2.0 installed, its crashing out completely for me.

the main fault for me is that I know that I i'm currently 10 hours off a skill finishing which will let me get in to my next ship, but EVESTC is telling me that I have 20 hours to go. this is becuase it hasnt deducted the amount of skill points I already have.

OK, some feedback:
1. FFET Guys: there's room in this game for both of us to have similar products, but not room in this thread to talk about both at the same time... hint hint
2. I've got some fixes to unhandled exceptions I'll put out later today.
3. I'll release a version that is just zipped up and has no installer later today.
4. I also am annoyed by the fact that I can't tell how much progress you have made in the current skill you are training. I'm trying to watch freighter 5 complete (20d) skill, and my SP hasn't increased in 3 weeks. I can tell from the character data which skill is in progress, but not how far along it is. I am working on it to see if there is a way to get more information about the skill being trained, but it will be a couple days at least before I have a defninitive answer.

you dont need to know the active skill just the number of skill points in it, deduct that from the total for that level and you have a more accurate prediction.
/charactersheet/characters/character[@characterID="CharID"]/skills/skillGroup[@groupName='Skill Group']/skill[@typeName='Skill Name']/skillpoints
you should only be out by how much the cache is out.
P.S. to FFET Guys I know Shadow Cruise kinda stepped on your product name unknowingly he has changed it so rather than comming "all up on" you could try and help each other to make a better product together ? for the benifit of the comunity which is what your both trying to do anyway.

Gerbil,
Thanks for the input, I was thinking that the cache time would give me some insight, and you just confirmed that thought, I'll see if I can work it in tonight.
Thanks, Shadow.

Good work! Easy to install, easy to set up and guess whatą IT WORKS!
IĘve been trying to use the EMS/ECM for the longest time, following all the install instructions and FAQĘs and as of yet have not gotten it too work. After reading their forums for a bit trolling for some possible answers it seems like the guys donĘt like hearing about common update problems. They tend to BLAST people for asking questions that have been listed in their FAQ vs. nicely pointing the person in the right direction (I guess after getting asked a million times it gets old, but pleaseą thatĘs not reason to have a coronary). Hell, get someone else to monitor the forums for you and take a break.
Bottom line people want something that works without a lot of hassle (editing config files, having to boot up EMS to get the update, and then run ECM to continue, etc.).
Competition tends to make better overall productsą so in the end all of us will benefit from this.

Edited by: Shadow Cruise on 13/04/2006 02:38:02 Release Notes for 1.0.7:
Fixes: - Several general unhandled exception cases. - Fixed problem with "'" in profile names. ' in character names is still an issue, but it should be resolved soon. - Added a zip distro that does not require you to run the installer.
Known Issues: - Some unhandled exceptions remain, if you see them, please post with any output from the application and I'll get them fixed. - Training times do not take into account the current skill in training. I'm working on calculations to determine the amount of time remaining, but its not as straight forward as I hoped. - Funky characters in the character name and profile name may still be causing issues, testing continues, but I wanted to get a release out today.

I have and use ECM, EMS, and shipfit and, as of tonight, I have started using this manager as well. I don't imagine either of you are going to jump at the idea, but your program has the ability to update itself while the eve-fett guys' program has more operability. I would HIGHLY recommend combining forces and comparing notes. Between the two of you, I'm convinced that a stable and truely amazing program can be designed. PLEASE!! ...that being said. I'll shut up now.

Nice work so far. Couple of suggestions that would be sweet -
In the list under 'Skill Name', add some kind of 'Show Info' option to display each skill's effects (ie. '5% improved ship agility per level', etc.) It's useful to see what abilities you will pick up on the way to your 'target' skill.
Items! Is this do-able? Also maybe a search function, as the item DB tree is a good bit larger than the ship one.
