There's a few nice tidbits in the latest Develop Mag, our man Reynir has been talking, expounding the CCP line, which is all well and good, but what interested me is the following quote a bit further in where they're talking about Vivox' VOIP for gaming....
"For example, Vivox got Immersion working in a demo version of EVE Online in a couple of weeks, alhough, as yet, there's no official word on whether the game will licence the technology"

so CCP.... are ya doing it? please? pretty please with bells on?

Yay, more features instead of fixing bugs lasting for years!
The VOIP feature in DDO is horribly laggy and causing even more client lag. And that's in groups of 6/12 persons max. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. They got Ray |

Our people are talking to their people, their agent talked to our agent, I think there was even a lunch in there somewhere. As for any licensing agreement or partnership, it is still too early to tell.

Spending much less cash on a font everyone can read comfortably on their machines would be a better investment. But that's just me and all those with problems reading the new and fancy font. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. VOIP will be great, as long as it doesnt lag the experience. The nayers can just disable it. ________________________________________________ Hypocritical. |

tbh, i don't think its needed. everyone has ventrillo or TS. i don't want the server to be loaded by our comms, i don't want CCP dev money going on this when we don't need it and i don't want to have communications lag out at bad times

Agreed. The people that depend on voice comms aren't likely to use it, since in-game comms are never as versatile as the dedicated programs for it. __________________ Inappropriate link description. --Jorauk mods - pwning sigs since 1943 |

If they are going to do it, they have to do a great job, or it will just cause a lot of problems. If done right, it could be a great feature.

And it dosn't disable properly on many sound cards (like, oh, mine) so I can't run TS alongside it either. Grr.

if you do this, make it so that eve cant be played with ventrilo or/and teamspeak running.
and also add a new° mechanism to ecm, when jammed, your voice coms is also jammed. as seen in several sci-fi series/films, you jam the target so it cant call for help. :P :D

As Above.
Theres already too many issues in eve, how about FIXING those issues before inserting ANY more content whatsoever. Get it perfectly working all known and suspected issues sorted. Then work on new content. ----- If you kill all the wolves, your gonna end up with a crapload of bunnies, and by bunnies I mean stupid people Eve & Linux Woot! |

surprisingly, finding a mistyped piece of code in several billion lines is probably 'slightly' more difficult than adding a mere few thousand more

Also, ban people that are at lan parties cause they might be exploiting by talking to their gang mates even when jammed.
And have their phone company tap into their phone lines to make sure they arent all on the phone with each other!

So, in your fantasy land... no more updates for any MMO ever then? We'd still have four ship classes.

Yes, so that people who can't get the voicecom to work (and it will be substantial minority) can't play in a deacent corp because voicecom is a requirement. GG.
Also, consider the fact that it'd likely be illegal, AND that some people are on a voice server for reasons other than Eve even while they have an Eve window open. If I had to close Eve every time I used TS to talk to some of my old friends, I'd be in Eve a lot less.

I'd honestly prefer this wasn't added. Some people already have enough trouble with lag in fleet battles (even after the upgrade), integrated voicecomms would just make it worse. Also, an integrated system slows down performance even outside fleet battles - for example I have to disable VOIP to even get Battlefield 2 to run properly on my machine.
Stick with TS and Ventrilo, or make the VOIP client a separate entity that can be hosted on private servers.

well, if it happens, it'll at least stop the "waaa! BoB* hacked our TS server!"
*insert whichever person you were fighting and lost to
actually, I can see ingame VoIP being superbly useful for "low level" communication in gang/squads, freeing up TS for a zero working as tactical command to feed information to the squad leaders.
I can actually see that being used for some highly structured comms, effectively opening the way for complex multi-channel tiered communication networks being implemented in fleets/gangs.
perhaps, rather than knocking the idea, as some people have done, we should list what we would like to see in such a VoIP feature, so a featurelist can be drawn up by ccp?

Now that's a pretty cool and constructive idea.

Sorry, dosn't work that way.
Firstly, TS's command channel functionality allready allows that. Secondly, running 2 voicecom apps at the same time causes issues.
Also, do bear in mind that many ISP's rate limit or block VoIP traffic.

Hell I'll personally code a VoIP feature for Eve if we can get a bloody response to the sovereignty skills thread that's at 17 pages with no dev response and this thread's at one page with TWO.
