OK has my last week in EVE been just bad luck or is this common practice and I should just cancel my account now?
1. The Vexor I managed to purchase and outfit for mining in .4 to .5 sec was destroyed by a gate camping 2 boxer in battleships and I was podded as well.
2. I managed with the ore I was able to mine with my Catalyst plus the insurance from the now dead and gone Vexor to purchase a thorax for ratting in .5 sec. I took a mission in .9 space and completed. While I am picking up my containers some (what I first thought) nooblet decides to steal from my cans. I target and light him up before I can really do anything my thorax os destroyed by his interceptor but I manage to get away before he can pod me.
3. Thinking that the whole thing is over and this punk has had his fun I get my destroyer and come back to get my cans. He pops up and if destroying my thorax wasn't enough he takes 50K from me to not destroy my catalyst.
Is this game just filled with griefers? If so, I'm out because this is f'n rediculous.

He's obviously not a "nublet" if he's flying an Inty...and you didn't have to engage. He most likely would have flown off if you hadn't attacked him. He was looking for a fight, and you chose to give him one.

That is unlucky mate. But remember that there are tools out there to fight the griefers aswell, if I were you I would join a solid corp and start having fun.
It happens to everyone, I lost countless thoraxes in my first few months.

You didn't list a single griefer in that post, but that's besides the point. Do you know what a griefer is?
1. You got destroyed by a gate camper. This means you made a mistake. Such as going into low sec without knowing how to use the scanner, or the map.
2. Well if he's in an interceptor, it doesn't sound like much of a "nooblet" to me. You can always reject the missions near gates if you don't want the risk.
3. Either your setup sucked or he really wasn't a "nooblet"
I'd suggest you look for the various guides around the forum for staying alive in low sec and fitting your ship
P.S. Don't fly what you can't afford to replace!

1. 0.4 space isnt safe so thats not bad luck thats your own fault
2. I assume you were doing a lvl2 mission and the loot is crap in those and not worth fighting over anyway and its your own fault for not checking his ship or info
3. Thats your own fault again since he has kill rights on you for 15 minutes you should either wait 15 mins to do anything or keep an eye on local and when he leaves then undock

My griefer detection system hasnt gone off, so i think your safe.
Anyway as Mr Sherbert Shikari says unfortunatly you made quite a few mistakes.
1) assuming because he was in a frig that he was a 'nooblet'
remedy - Right click - show info - look at date he started. Right click - sow info on his ship.
2) You didnt check the map, scanner etc etc etc. 0.4 is dangerous u should take as many precausions as possible.
3) When u die, LEAVE the can. its a pain but unless u got a kick a*s ship dont go back. write it down to experience.

Wait, on all the posts in this thread, you pick on mine as "elitist"?!?! Am I elitist for not telling him "OMG YOU NEED 20M SKILL POINTS TO PLAY EVE"?
Obviously, going by his post, he made a mistake. Am I supposed to lie to him and say he didn't? Making mistakes is part of learning--there's nothing wrong with saying someone made a mistake.

"Crap"?
What do you want me to do, give you cake and cookies?
You made a mistake, everyone does. Live and learn. Do you want me to lie to you and say "oh you did nothing wrong its just an ebil griefer"?
If you are so closed-minded and stubborn that you won't even listen to someone trying to help you just because they claim you made a simple, common set of mistakes (which to be honest, everyone makes), you should not be playing EVE.
I made these exact same mistakes when I started playing the game, and the solutions to some of these problems I had to find out for my own. Others I learned by asking and getting responses like I have given you today. But I actually read the posts and looked at the suggestions, and then read the appropriate guides. And I learned something.

*chuckle* sounds like you had one of them days.
I would quite call it griefing, instead it was a bit of clever thinking on his end.
Out of curiosity, knowing that he might still be there when u return for your cans, why didnt you bring a friend or 2. Once bitten twice shy ya know.
Place yourself in the killers shoes, you've killed someone and have no way of carrying all the loot off in one go. do you a. start running running back and forth hauling b. swap into a hauler and fly back with the chance that you'll be waiting in a bs. or c. wait around for you to come back and ransom you, and still have a chance to grab yr loot after you've been scared off.
Dont be disheartened tho, you can always carry a grudge against this guy and look forward to the day you bump into him when yopu have then upper hand.
Remeber, dying kinda sucks, but revenge is so so sweet.

he died because he made mistakes. we could have said "you died because you a noob LOL come back when you gots 5million SP, but we didn't. And that wasn't why he died.
He died because he made mistakes. he needs to see that, or he will never correct those mistakes. I blew up a lot of ships learning to play this game, and i don't expect that there are any in game who didn't. you play, you learn. if you die, its not bad luck and its not griefing. YOU ****** up. its your fault.
when you learn to pin the blame on yourself, then you see how you can improve. As long as its the other guy's fault and you are perfect, that other guy is always going to be better than you.

"So I decide to look for something interesting and this is the crap I get?"
Well some people say that "may you live in interesting times" is a curse.
You decided to go where things aren't safe or shoot at people. You can do that but to make things interesting there is a risk. A risk of loosing something you worked for. The people you ran into are not griefers, they are other players just like you looking for something interesting.
May you live in interesting times http://members.home.nl/running.sizzor/images/taniya.jpg

Rember the guys name, get a good ship, and pod him. Then write a thread about "my first PVP kill".
Trust me, killing someone in EVE is more of a rush then any other game, except maybe Descent 1 and 2.
There is real loss here. You don't just run around to where the weapon spawns and pick up a replacement. Here you buy a new ship, new fittings, insure it and head out again. Think of it this way, his intereptor costs a few beans. How upset will he be when you vapourise it around him.
Revenge is a dish best served cold. Join us on the dark side. Much more fun to be had there. --

I think it's fair to say she understands your situation better than you do. You went up against an interceptor twice, the fact you lost proves it was a mistake. Her saying 'you screwed up' is perfectly valid when... well.... you screwed up!
If you can't reflect on your mistakes and learn from them, you're probably playing the wrong game. -----

Engaging an interceptor... For the Record, this is a tec 2 ship, while not offering enourmomous firepower (still enough to pick you apart) it is hella fast and you won't be able to even have a 1% chance to kill him since he must be in the game alot longer than you, thus giving him the skills to actually fly that ship. Whatever... you engaged him, bad mistake. You learned from it. You gained "experience" my friend.
0.4 is not the place to go if you can't deal with getting destroyed. Simple as is. We all had to learn this sometimes I guess.
If you want to run missions, there are plenty agents that won't send you to 0.4 or less go find them. get happy, but don't expect an unsafe place to be safe. That's what you're actually doing. And for the podding thing... get over it, it's just like that. -----------------------

just a slight comment on #2...
1) I severely doubt he planned on blowing you up. in fact he probably planned on having to run away. 2) I wouldn't expect you to be able to blow him up, as you wouldn't be likely to have a warp scrambler... but where was your webber? and drones? at least when I think of thorax fittings its kinda "guns, check. AB/MWD, check. webber, check. 3) get drone interfacing 3. ... yesterday.
you won't belive the difference it will make.

I just started this game about 3 days ago. I've been playing MMO's since everquest, and I can honostly say this is the first game that gives me that feeling of dread when I enter certain areas. I've been in 0.4 space a couple times now (I have about 24 hours played I believe) and I'm always as on guard as I possibly can be. I always throw my shields up and am ready to warp at the slightest hint of danger.
Will this save me or my new Merlin? Nope lol. The thing I find fun is the fact that when I complete a mission in places like that as a complete and total noob, I really feel like I got away with something. I realize it won't last forever though. Someone out there is going to pod me, but when it happens I can be happy with the fact that I did everything I could with the limited amount of knowledge that I have in this game.
Live and learn, as they say =)
P.S. If you see a guy named Warpis flying around in a merlin, think to yourself "free kill!" because at this point I pretty much am lol.

Most of the replies have been pretty helpfull if you take their advice. Coming to the forums screaming omgwtfgriefer and threatening to quit isn't exactly the best way to get help.
1. Eve is a PvP game and you were in a PvP area (0.0 - 0.4 space). This guy was pirating which is a perfectly valid proffesion. Theres lots of guides all over the forums that deals with lowsec safety.
2. Can flagging gives you the chanse to engage theives, you dont have to. You attacked him and he can then defend himself, which he did. Since it appears you have no problem attacking other players isn't a bit hypocritical to compain when you get beaten? Or were you just hoping for an easy kill on a noob? (omg greifer!)
3. If you take from the can your effectivly stealing his loot, you proably got a popup warning about that. And if it was still within 15 minutes of your fight then you'd both still be flagged.
IMHO Eve actually has very few griefers compaired to other games. Theres not many problems that can't be solved by simply using bigger guns
Stick with it, relise that EVE is a PvP game and revenge can be sweet ----- Geotech is recruiting! |
