So many people seemingly feel the urge to dive into low sec space as soon as they have a half-decent ship around them. The thing to remember is that .4 and below is simply never safe, and if you go out there, you do have to accept that losing your ship is on the cards. on the other hand, the reward often outweighs the risk (ironically, there's usually less risk in 0.0 systems, as there are less people willing to go out there - but I wouldn't advise going out there at all unless you're friendly with the local alliance in some way.)
Quote: 2. I managed with the ore I was able to mine with my Catalyst plus the insurance from the now dead and gone Vexor to purchase a thorax for ratting in .5 sec. I took a mission in .9 space and completed. While I am picking up my containers some (what I first thought) nooblet decides to steal from my cans. I target and light him up before I can really do anything my thorax os destroyed by his interceptor but I manage to get away before he can pod me.
Can thieves really are griefers, but they're sneaky griefers in that they want to provoke you into opening fire, so even if you DO destroy them, CONCORD comes along and splatters you.
The golden rule with PvP in empire is to never open fire on anybody unless there's red showing - this means that they've already opened fire on you, or else that you have kill rights, or are at war with them. If there's no red anywhere near their name, don't shoot.
Quote: 3. Thinking that the whole thing is over and this punk has had his fun I get my destroyer and come back to get my cans. He pops up and if destroying my thorax wasn't enough he takes 50K from me to not destroy my catalyst.
Is this game just filled with griefers? If so, I'm out because this is f'n rediculous.
I sympathise, but making a couple of understandable mistakes and getting your behind handed to you by a guy who was out to cause trouble isn't really good reason to quit. Just put him on your hit list, and build yourself back up to that Thorax. Hell, I've got a few players I intend to punish for past infractions against me, but that's life in this game.
There are griefers, sure, as with any game... but they are far and away the minority, in my experience.
The ebst advice: it's a game. don't take things personally.

Look on it as a learning experience, not as a bad week. Last week I lost 3 ravens, a dominix and a brutix within the space of 48 hours. They were all due to mistakes I made such as not checking out the details of a lvl 4 mission properly before warping in and not paying attention at a gate in a 0.2 system.
I won't make any of those mistakes again, I can tell you - however since I had already learned the most important lesson a long time ago none of those losses were devastating, and the most important lesson is "Never fly anything you can't afford to replace!".

Luckily not all of EVE is populated by semi-literate children like that poster so don't worry about it, learn & adapt

In this game, everyone with a few skills seems bigger than you to start with. As you gain more skills and more experience, you begin to see that they start to get smaller and smaller. If you specialise in certain weapons and get skills that add more damage, range and rate of fire to those weapons, chances are that you will soon be better than half of those "griefers" who often spread their skills out too thin.
You lost a 6 million isk ship, so come back later when you have the skills to make mincemeat of his inty. He lost a 30 million isk ship, now who's going to be crying?
When I travel to lowsec on occasion, I expect to lose my ship so it's a bonus to me if I make it back with the hull still intact. If you look at it from that viewpoint, each successful trip is a bonus and each time you lost a ship, you were expecting it anyway so it's no real loss. Always remember rule number 1. In lowsec, don't fly what you can't afford to replace.
On a final note: If you have a cruiser or a BS, don't immediately think it's better than a smaller ship just because it's bigger. It takes a fair amount of skills to swat those little frigates that buzz around you like flies. So until you have those skills, keep your combat to frigates yourself and you'll be surprised how effective those small guns can be when you ramp up the skills for them. Ramp up the skills for medium guns before you get into the cruiser and they can be just as effective against frigates but experience helps since you also need to learn different tactical moves to do it. My skills are not that good, but at a reasonable range which is outside their range, I can pop a frigate in two volleys from my BC guns. When I first got in it, I nearly got ganked by a single frigate.

Oh dear. This is 0.0? That explains a few things. Should have checked the frigging maps. There must be a red blob for post kills visible right to the EVE Technology and Research Center region.

My apologies to Shikari. I am still a little hot about losing 2 cruisers. ESPECIALLY since I just bought them. I know that I screwed up in attacking the interceptor. Like I said originally I thought he was a nooblet. My first character was a minmatar so when I saw the graphic for the ship I recognized it as a frigate ship I know that their interceptor used the same graphic.
As for using scanners I still have yet to figure out the bloody thing works. I use it when I hit an asteroid field to see if there is anything worth mining. I don't know how to use it for a full system. So when I warped back to the scene of the crime (incidentally still in .9 space) I didn't see him on the overhead. I figured it was safe to go grab my stuff.
Finally I know that .0 to .4 is pvp zone. But even in .4 there are still gate defense cannons. WTF didn't they shred this dude's BCs when he lit me up? Don't they know when to attack?

I though it was two Battleships? Properly fitted, Battleships can tank sentry guns for long enough to 'gank'. -----

Naraj I feel for you I do. I know a lot of people come into this game without realizing that there are a lot of malicious players out there in EVE space that take extreme pleasure in depriving other players of everything they've worked hard for. As many will tell you it's part of the game. However the EVE you play doesn't have to have the scales tipped in the favor of the bad guys. Take this moment to learn from recent events and then go forward and be proactive in developing a safer more just EVE.

Yeah, I've had the same thing for about 4 months now. Lost 2 fully tech II / named BS's within 24 hours of eachother, both less than 3 hours old. I think its stopped slightly now, I've not died in 5 days ---------------------------

That is totally unfair! We pirate because it's a profession. It's a part of the game. When I find someone I don't think 'oooh it's going to be fun to deprive him of that Thorax'. I think 'Ransom!' or 'TECH 2! GIMME!'.
We're not inherently evil just because we kill other players, it's called PvP. -----

Congratulations, you have found what you were looking for, no? Eve doesnt offer you cuter elves, greener trees, etc. It offers you
1. Plenty of griefers to make the game interesting in a special way. 2. "A meaning to pvp" - also known as GRIND that is comparable (or worse) then what most people do to earn a living in "real life", whatever that is.
Oh and by the way, you just leveled up. Since in eve, the player knowledge matters quite a lot.

If you are one of the few who actually ransom then I'll give you a nod, most do not however. To note It's taken me a week and a half to earn back what 2 pirates in BSs took from me in less than a minute, so yeah I say malicious. Maybe its different for PvPers with millions and millions in their accounts, for the newer players it's a lot more costly.

Edited by: AlienBreed on 20/04/2006 05:25:12 There is deffinately something wrong with a game when the guy being wronged is the one that gets shafted or in this case double shafted
Hes minding his own business and somebody steals from him and yet he ends up in the pod I know there are people reading this that cant wait to come back with "oh well he didnt have to fire its his own fault" but i very much feel that can theifs should not have the rigth to return fire, after all nobody forces them to steal and if they do they should have to take their chances The system as it is has created a new form of grief play where the lamer steals not because he wants to take an item and profit but in the hopes of getting a respose and then killing a weaker player - i think noobs ought to be protected from that and its not like its difficult to steal and be gone b4 the owner can even lock

I feel like I conducted myself as a VERY honorable Pirate (if that makes sense). Even Though 100k probably didnt even pay for the ammo I used on you . BUT I none the less felt bad ....

I'm truely sorry you feel like you're being griefed. Ask ANYONE in game that knows me ... I'm far from a 'griefer'. I was honestly creeping around the system, I was about to leave AND you turned into a 'Target of Opportunity'. I 'BAITED' you AND you were hooked like a 10 LBS BASS.
BTW: Look for my soon to come GUIDE: 'You TOO can be a 'MASTER' Baiter !!'
1. You didn't have to shoot at me. (But deep down inside I was hoping you did) 2. You did. 3. You Paid the price.
4. Lesson learned ?
================================
Naraj,
I've been playing the game for 2+ years now. I totally empathize with where you are ATM. New to the game, wanting to have nice ships, No money, not having enough playing time, skill changing in the middle of the night.
We've ALL been there. Some of us are still going through it. EVE is a WONDERFUL game and don't let one bad experience put you off. YOUR greatest asset in the game IS the friends you make along the way. In the END ... just remember its JUST a game ... and if you truly aren't having fun ... then don't play.
Thats the MAIN reason I'm now doing what i do in the game. I've just about done it all. I've Mined, I've Run missions, I've had a small POS, My ALT created a FUN AS HELL alliance, I've flown a 120 jump RACE, I've gone through 20+ wars in 1 year (done ALOT of running). The Game has ALOT to offer.
NOW its time for someone else to be on the ASS end of the 'BEATING' stick!!
So I've taken up pirating
Thank-You,
The Jackhammer

1. You got destroyed by a gate camper. This means you made a mistake. Such as going into low sec without knowing how to use the scanner, or the map.
2. Well if he's in an interceptor, it doesn't sound like much of a "nooblet" to me. You can always reject the missions near gates if you don't want the risk.
3. Either your setup sucked or he really wasn't a "nooblet"
WTF lady? You seem to think that I know everything about this bloody game? I just freaking started and was getting bored with running the same level 1 missions all over again and mining rich pelagiocast. So I decide to look for something interesting and this is the crap I get?
No, you did not get any crap, you got something more interesting! Thats exactly what you got! SO learn by this experience and become better! What everybody here is trying to tell you is that you could have avoided all of this. This means that next time You SHOULD be a little better prepared.
Welcome to the game *** TRats - We ransom!!! *** |

Personally I think that The Jackhammer should take Naraj under his wing and train him up to be a hardened pirate in the harsh world of EVE. Think Karate Kid II.
