I have approximately 520,000 skill points and desire to get behind the helm of a Ferox as soon as possible. I've heard mixed things in game from various channels on the topic of getting my Ferox before I have the skills to use it "properly". I imagine the difference in ship stats between the Caracal and Ferox alone would be kick ass regardless of whether I had the skills to use it in PVP or 0.0 ratting or not. So at this point I am trying to figure out if I should invest money into a Caracal or go ahead and get my Ferox now. I realize that I do not have the skills to realize the Ferox's true protential but in approximately 26 days, according to the training time calculations of EVE Character Manager, I plan on using using this build and this skill set which are both outlined in the thread Ferox PvP.
At the moment I am mainly doing missions and don't plan on doing any PVP until I get the setup outlined above. Is it too early to get my Ferox or? It Is Better To Die For Lamia Than To Live For Yourself |

Damned if I'd PvP in a Ferox, even now, but if it's any comfort I was flying a Ferox very early on for PvE (around 750K I think; very little in shields/missiles). Served me well on L3s, never lost one to this date.

for PvE shes a forgiving ship, alittle slow and fat but can still tango with the best of the lvl 3 dancers...

For level 3 missions: no such thing as too early
For 0.0 ratting: too early
For PvP: definitely too early

It'll work and survive fine, just not do all that uber damage. Not like a Ferox ever does, but you get the idea.

I look at it like this.
Missions.
lvl 1 - Frigate. lcl 2 - Cruiser. lvl 3 - BC. lvl 4 - BS.
As for ratting. unless it's a "Safe" system then I'd not take a Ferox there. They are slow, and not the best for PvP. And if you're in low sec, you wille eventually be jumped. Unless it's a "Safe" lowsec system.

Just realize that the "skill set" you have linked to, is leaving out SOOOO much. That is just the skeleton. --- Player Flown Fighters? Robot Arm |

I am aware that there are tons of skills out there but this looked like a good route to go to get started in PVP. That thread is full of people who use it for PVP and prefer it over a Raven. I just want to get into PVP ASAP. In the mean time PvE is what I'll be spending my time on. It Is Better To Die For Lamia Than To Live For Yourself |

Second that motion!
Dealing with the same question ATM - however I am at 3.5 million Skill Points.
As far as I know, the Ferox is almost as good a tanker as a Raven but considerably cheaper. I'd hate to loose my Raven on my first excursion to 0.0 space .....

I'm no PvP expert, but I wouldn't suggest using a BC to PvP at your level. You will lose it... very quickly. Try a cruiser to PvP in. If money isn't an issue tho... well break a leg :) ____________________________________________ Don't worry aboutit |

when ur that low on skillpoints it's atleast better to go for a ferox than a bs :)

To put in my two cents id say this. Im currently using a Prophecy (as i lost my bs in a strange fight) so I got bored and trained for caldari. I had head caracals were amazing cruisers so i went for one. And since then Ive been using my caracal.
So heres my opinion (just using the caracal as an example):
1. Caracal: 6-7.5 mil isk
Ferox: 30-35 mil isk
2. Caracal: amazing damage output for its size.
Ferox: Amazing damage output...but not compared to other bc's.
3. Caracal: 6 mid slots for shield tanking
Ferox: 5 mid slots for shields tanking
so basically what im trying to get across is..if outfitted right then even not very skilled players can use caracals for pvp "fairly" well.
As for a ferox? probably not. So if you have the money then go buy a few caracals and outfit them and it wont cost you an armo and a leg to pvp until your skills improve.
hope that helped :)

I really appreciate the input. I am looking for a corp right now that operates in zero sec space but isn't really involved in any hardcore wars. I don't think the ferox would be very useful to me in such a setting and if I do get jumped by another player I like my odds, in escaping at the very least, much better in the Caracal. Thank you =) It Is Better To Die For Lamia Than To Live For Yourself |

afaik the caracal has only 5 midslots, but you are right on the rest.
They are both good ships, but the caracal gives an amazing performance for only a couple of mill.

Ferox DPS isn't amazing at all with missiles, it's cruiser-grade, but the tank is comparable to a BS really. With good skills you can and will passive tank some level 4s and double/triple 800k-1mil BSes.

It's ironic that in real life a battlecruiser is supposed to have the firepower of battleships, but the speed of a cruiser, but in EVE, they have the speed/armor of a battleship(well, heavier than cruisers) but the damage of cruisers. :p
I'm at 1.7 mil or so in skill points with a rail ferox, it's a nice ship, does about 80-180 damage per shot with it's rail guns. It's also a beast of a shield tank,a nd it's not even at its full sheild potential(not enough grid yet). Although, I must say. In a straight up fight, a Ferox will eat a caracal for breakfast. I was in a belt the other day, got jumped by a Cara and some other minmatar ship. The cara started unloading missiles on me, but because of the massive shields and hardeners I had equipped, he did almost no damage. My railguns then started to take him apart, until he finally jumped out.
In short, Feroxes(feroxi?) don't have amazing firepower, atleast, not without some decent amount of gunnery skills, but it's a beast of a tank.

get battlecruiser level 4 and fit everything you can to get the shield resists as hight as you can. when I do level 4 missions I use the ferox over the raven for tanking, and the raven over the ferox for dealing damage
every ship is ideal for a job, I feel the ferox is best for tanking and killing small fleets of frigs and cruisers and the 5% shield resists and 3k base shield allows low SP characters to stay in the action for longer than a caracal could
always get full insurance on a ferox before taking it anywhere you might loose it
