This post is aimed at those who have a full time job or college course etc...
You have played EVE for a long time - maybe too long, you still spend more hours than you 'know' you should playing EVE - your corps needs you - realistically you can't 'dabble' - your either an active corps team member or forget it.....
Meanwhile that nagging voice in your head is telling you to quit and start devoting time to the things that you have been neglecting i.e. work, college, wife or girlfriend (or both if yer lucky).
So what do you do? Is their a happy medium bearing in mind the addictive nature of the game and all the time thinkng about eve stuff even where your not online ? Or is a clean break best ?

Agreed currently stuck in the middle
I play too much and Im being told to get my head out of the computer and spend more time in real life. Tried to quit, and all I did was coming back and spending even more time to make up for what has been lost during the break
Unfortunately, no advice here, as I could do with some too |

You should really try to find a balance. And if you can't, you probably have a problem and should at least take a long break. Try to get back in a healthy way, and find a good balance. And if that doesn't work, leave and don't come back.

Towr, you need to train yourself to mentally choose from a list, in order of priority, whenever you have to make a choice in life. Simply put, if Eve is at the top of the list, I expect you are a developer or investor in CCP. So, always given a choice between Assignment v Eve, Date v Eve, Goingtoseeyourmum v Eve, mentally think about Eve being second or even third in the list, rather than first.
At times when you don't need to make that choice, you won't feel guilty for doing so if at other times you've made the right one.

When I have nothing else to do I do little other than play Eve, but when I have a girlfriend, or housework, or anything like that, then that comes first.
I love playing Eve but when stuff needs doing, it needs doing

Theres recently been a large number of articles on gaming addiction relating to mmo's, the gist of it revolves around the lack of chemical response in the brain from mmo's due to their longterm nature compared to faster round style games. Ie basicly the thrill seek doesn't occurr in mmo's on the same level so people are getting addicted chasing it. Will probably manifest itself in a few years as a major addiction, especially as the now recommended max ammount of time spent playying mmos per week is 20 hours you only need to wonder over xfire to see the majority is exceceding it.

I must admit I was playing far too much. Took a break tried to get back into it and can't. I'm really busy at the moment but even if I have a spare couple of hours I'll think of anything else to do but play EVE.
I'm having difficulty leaving my char untrained though. What I should really do is terminate them. Just seems a shame to terminate my chars they have around 80 mill SPs between them.
If EVE is having a negative affect on your life give someone your password and ask them to terminate the characters.

Edited by: Splagada on 23/04/2006 14:36:38 I'm maybe a bit too blunt here but imo the day you will experience a real life loss (job, gf, money, whatever) because of your online addiction, then you will get everything sorted out in minutes
come on. just a game.
dont wait it harms you, the game is not at all the cause, just a symptom of another problem -

When I feel like this I ask one of my corp mates to train my characters for me and take a break.
Just remember that RL is more important that EVE, although admittedly I sometimes wish it wasn't.

That's against the EULA, so I wouldn't recommend it.

When this happens to me i do one of 2 things.
1. i take a break fom eve 1-3 months.
2. Or i give my apologys to the corp im in explain i n eed a break and say ive decided to leave the corp for a while for a holiday. Then i can just dabble in eve and have no corp responsabilitys and when im ready i can rejoin the corp.

I can't say I've ever seen anyone be banned for letting someone log in to change skills when they can't. I'm pretty sure we've all done that from time to time with our most trusted friends. For the record, though, kieron did say that it's not a breach of the EULA to share your login information with direct family so maybe you are allowed to get a brother to do it?

One alternative is to consider if you want to carry on playing eve just be slowing the pace down a little is to get a second computer. Nothing flashy, you can pick up a system capable of playing eve for as little as ú250 (Noticed I said capable of playing, I didn't say capable of playing well).
You can now mine/ agent run/ just chat whilst getting on with that assignment. RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!!!

Hhmm I'm in a corp where people actually have real lifes, and RL goes first, always, above everything.
Noone takes the **** about this, so it is pretty doable, cause if there is something in rl coming up, going out with friends, GF, work, you are free to do that and just join in another time.

I found a balance by founding my own 1 man corp. I was in a 0.0 alliance but felt bad if i was not on line helping. Now i can just hop on when i feel like it and do a few missions or NPC hunting. Looking at getting into building as well as it is something that i can set in motion and come back to later.

Edited by: Lardarz B''stard on 23/04/2006 16:55:41 I am doing a Masters and I treat it like a job.
That means I get up at 5 or 6, play eve till 9 then work till 5. Then I play eve till midnight unless I am going out.
This works, except I often fall asleep while I am doing work.

I have a full time job, and I spend way too much time playing EVE, as well as the occassional bit of moderating.
There aren't enough hours in the day

There should never be a question of what you "should" do. RL always comes first hand, after all, this is just a game. And if you feel like you need a break, just keep your account active, log on to change skills only, and keep on with your RL. If you cant controll it, and always "have to play abit", you got problems. I play alot, basically all freetime i can get. But i never say no to RL stuff like friends, movies and things. Its when you start doing this, that you clearly need help.

run eve in window mode, skill train while doing that assignment. If it gets too bad, train a long skill and back off for a few days. Uninstall it if you have to pull yourself away.
the fact is, you'll be working/schooling/with a girl longer than eve will be around.
it's a matter of priorities.
as a low SP hauler, being war dec'd is a good way to sit back and skill train in dock

Consider yourself lucky you are playing eve as opposed to other mmo games. You can take a break from eve and still keep the important skill training going. I have been horribly addicted to at least 3 games in the past (quake 2, jumpgate, planetside) and have finally learned how to control the habit. My eve char is 1.5 years old and i reckon i have played for about 4 months of that
I'm back in the summer for some serious overtime however, where life will take 2nd place, so for gods sake dont listen to a word i say
Oh except that taking a break is a very good time to do one of those rank 5+ lvl 5s... the time flies by when you arent checking every day!

In Eve, as in life, remember the words of the late, great Bill Hicks.
"It's just a ride."
