Its funny how in real life, one tank shoots another tank, and usually the tank explodes. Or a ship fires a missile at another ship, and one or two missiles take out a ship.
In eve you needs dozens of missiles, hundreds of railgun slugs or shots from lasers. What kind of TRASH weapons require that many hits to score a kill?

I too think at the very least the Dread design theory (fewer and larger) guns should be applied to the smaller non cap ships.
Ideally the whole Eve slot/weapon system should be scrapped and replaced with a more practical system. I would detail it out, but I'm tired, and I know I'll get flamed lol.

What kind of 'trash' game would it be if you could always insta-kill somebody ? In some cases you already can, which is bad enough. So I don't really see the point in your argument.

Russo, don't tell us about that "RL" thing. We don't have space ships jumping around and shooting each other in real life, do we?

How many bombs and torpedoes did it take to sink the Yamato again?
And she didnt even have sheilds.
OT: Yeah, battleship guns look puny. Frigate/destroyer weapons look about right, and cruisers not too bad though.
Tech 2 small projectile guns just look screwed up, but that's a different story... ________

I used to think the Apoc guns looked to small, but having seen my corp mates Apoc in action with all 4 lasers blazing I started to think they were looking quite reasonable. When the Apoc fires those things the sound makes them truly scary to be near, but awesome to see decimating rogue drones (the fact he could hit them was something of another small miracle though).

Well how about the massive bulk of the ships is to have enough space to power the guns (huge generator) same for their defences, shield enerators taking up lots of space, cpu as well, and then the biggest weapon you can fit is the ones you see now. Not forgetting sensor systems take lots of space too, etc. Basically I think it's too late to change the model sizes now, so just make up some reasons for them being the way they are. Would you say the 1400mm artillery is approximately to scale? 1.4 meter diameter barrel, same for the other weapon sizes. Sounds I agree could be alot more hearty.

Well smarty pants'. As time has gone on, weapons have been getting more and more lethal. Sinking the Yamato took alot of hits because it was a huge ship, period. And we didnt really have the great smart weapons we do today.
But I promise you today, a couple anti ship missiles would drop any ship that is on the sea. And imagine thousands of years in the future. You think weapons would get worse? No....they would get more deadly.
It wouldnt make PVP last longer, but it sure would be more realistic. But in rl pvp can end very fast. :) Like getting shot once with a gun in the right spot and youre dead, period. Or a tank getting a lucky hit with an RPG, and its over. Or a tank getting hit with a depleted uranium sabot....over...one hit.
Thats just real life for ya.

I think we've touched on an obvious failing in EVE here. I've always wondered why ships didnt have any fixed guns as well as turret guns. If fixed guns existed they would obviously have more power but would require the whole ship to move to aim. They would also be a part of the ship so making ships with them would require the creation of an entirely new line of ships. Turret guns would then have the same power they have now and can still fire in any direction. And I also agree that watching my ship fight isnt as satisfying as say watching my tie-fighter fight in the lastest starwars games. the guns just arnt that amazing.

/totally signed. Maybe models might get rejigged when they release the new hi-res textures, which are stunning. Beam lasers that cut ships in half like those on the Shadow ships in Babylon 5 would have been kinda cool too, shame the dev of that game got canned.

Agreed; gun-sizes on frigs & cruisers are fine, on dreads they're perfect... on battleships however, they're *way* too small!

Yep, sounds need some work, a big gun should sound like a big gun. No one ever mistook the sound of Anzio Annie for a mortor. |

I agree completly battleship guns look like pea shooters. Also launchers displaying on ship models would be great. While I'm at it when I get a kill could I have a sexy female computer voice go "target destroyed commander". Currently I have to get my girl friend to stand next to my computer while I'm in battles and do the voice for me, frankly I think its damaging my relationship.

I remember feeling the suspence as the mammoth weapons charged up, then cut lose and carved a hunk out of an enemy cap ship as it cut along it's hull.
All this game has various types of pee-shooters!
Why cant we have somthing like that, akin to the sweeping beams of the sentinals in Halo?
This is not Halo that players can cheat in like Halo and many of us think Halo is low grade crap that can not even come close to the skill it takes to play eve !
And as i was a privet mod programer for the freelancer game i did get to see how just about any one can cheat.
I love eve do to all the skills it take to do things and the time it takes to learn things.
That make eve better then any jump right in kill any thing and every thing game thats out there!

I also think BS guns should be bigger, and as an example here is where a pic of a US battleship. The turrest on this are big yes. But the ship itself still looks big as well. while I think for some ships 6-8 monsters like this would be too much. making them so that we can see them at a farther distance would be better.

The other thing that make the turret size seem out of place is the tracking speeds. Right now, BS turrets just don't look like they should track that slow. The need to have their size bumped up a bit so their looks are inline with their performance. (Right now the look more like anti-frigate/crusier point defence guns than the BS's main weapons. Dread's have the scaling just about perfect, we need to see something like that for BS's scalewise.

Yargi, you just hit the nail on the head. And honestly, some of those sounds are childish. I was mostly playing fights without sounds to keep full performance, but in the last few weeks i tend to faver looks over performance. Sadly, some of the sounds are just too "dry". ------------------------------------------------ When you get to the end of your journey, everything that really matters is the journey itself. |

Everytime I got into a new BS i had to search its hull for the guns. I laughed loud when I saw the tiny tiny 425mm railguns on my mega for the first time. And amazed to hear that they sounded weaker than 150mm rails :p
I Stopped using Large railguns and went for Ion Blaster Cannons instead. At least they *sound* deadly ;] (and they are)

ooo, ion blasters are niiiiice. i love the powerup sound they make just before they fire. i swear the devs got the large neut and ion modle and sounds mixed up...
Hilabana: what's with that anti-halo post? the guy who mentioned halo was refering the way the weapons look and sound. he said nothing about taking halo's gameplay or code and putting it into eve. i guess he used halo as his final example cos freespace is a bit old and dated now.
if you havent played freespace go find a copy. your in the frigs of that world and the bigger ships realy do feel right. flying between 2 BS's slugging it out in a nebula cloud is something i'll never forget. the turret guns are the same size as your ship and like the pic of a real BS Rosera posted or the scaling on the dreads they look the right size for the ships. when you fly between 2 of em fighing you can hear the beam weapons power up, and if your in the wrong place at the wrong time you will die.
i wish the lasers in eve were like the beam weapons in freespace. they way the punch through ships, or slice them up. mmmmmm. the BS guns we have now really do look like point defence guns, Yarginistala was spot on with that comment.
lol @ trent, i dont think an eve voice is ever going to be able to better your girl friend. just listen to the brain dead sounding voice we have now! dont know about u but i turned off the voice when they patched this one in. nahh, stick with your girlfriend, get a voice recording if you must, cant loose her to eve

since ccp is planing a major grapical upgrade of all eve ship models it would be a good idea to upgrade the sounds aswell....maybe new sounds for firing guns, some new songs for the jukebox, more engine sounds (for example the sound for a charging mwd or afterburner exhaust)
would be great...remember the ship a.i. voice change...i hated it in first place but now it isnt bad and still sounds somehow haunting and cybernetic to me

Freaking BS guns are SMALL compared to the ship, When you look at a frig they are big tho =/ It is a little weird looking at an inty coated in guns. But you look at a BS with only a few flecks on it that appear to be guns.

Freespace 1 and 2 were the best space combat sims ever created. In fact I just reinstalled them both.
Some stronger gun blast sounds would be most welcome in my book. Iv never liked the way turrets looked in this game. They should look like they are part of the ship instead of akwardly hanging off the side connected by a "stem?".

I want a full rack of Yamamoto guns, some long lancer torps, and the Iowas fire control system.
Yamamoto, as in Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, as you can guess by his title, was an Admiral in the Japanese Navy during WW2.
However, you are thinking of Yamato class battleship(s) which had 46cm (18.1in) bore cannons.
Ironically though, powerful though they may have been, the Iowa and South Dakota class 16in cannons are actually considerably more powerful, firing a shell more than 10% heavier, faster and further than the Yamato class 46cm cannons could have. Sadly, a side effect to the statistics of weaponry is that many often assume “bigger is better”, and so the Yamato’s cannons are often inappropriately assumed as more powerful than others simply due to being larger diameter.

Yea, I read that too. Longer barrel, higher velocity, better plunging fire at long range to defeat the deck armor. |
