Honestly, you'd think that after all this time it's something that would have been implemented. Not everyone has a credit (Visa/MC/AMEX) card. Not everyone wants to or feels comfortable setting up an account with Paypal and the like.
Maestro/Switch is the most commonly used form of debit card (and probably more used than Visa/MC/AMEX in terms of numbers of people with one), it's available to more people and yet it's not a direct option for payment.
I'm sure there is an explanation for this, but I'd really be interested to hear what it is. |

lol here in belgium a maestro card is the first card you get, and it's not accepted everywhere :p
in france it's accepted nowhere, and in most country
ask a mastercard they cost 15 per year, or just ask your bank to do it for free, they sometimes accept -

my debit card has a VISA logo on it...so it works just like a credit card....but its a debit card.
Never heard of the cards you mentioned, but yea, you dont see debit support anywhere on the internet.....but of course debit cards are not fraud insured, so are you sure you want to use it?

Edited by: Maya Rkell on 24/04/2006 19:27:02 Yes, there is marginally more fraud with Switch/Maestro. But that's going to be more than mde up in people who can now play who previously had issues - especialy those shafted by the PBC paypal fiasco.
In the UK, very very few retailers do not support Switch/Maestro. A significant number don't support Electron/Delta, mind you.

Debit cards have often been restricted like that. My theory is that it's because debit cards hit your current account immediately. That means they are like a blank cheque. DD fraud can leave you without any money.
In contrast although a CC issuer will expect you to pay something toward a contested debt, by their nature you don't get bankrupted by one bad bill. You can just make the monthly payment until the matter is cleared up, reclaim the interest and move on.
CC fraud is therefore irritating but not a serious problem. DD fraud could leave you stuck on a railway platform hundreds of miles from home with no money to your name. CC fraud never would. -- (Battle hardened miner)

So what? From CCP's perspective we're talking small payment amounts. Because suspicious activity DOES get noticed like with a CC...

Yes it does get noticed but you're missing the point. If my CC gets debited 10k then I have to pay interest while the matter is cleared up. Although annoying and worrying life continues. If I'm a good customer I probably get a replacement CC by next day post and an immediate refund.
If my DD gets debited for 10k my mortgage, pension and loans don't get paid. I risk being dragged into court and a CCJ being made against me. My life could be temporarily ruined. I may even have difficulty buying food.
CC cards allow you to defer big payments whereas a DD is immediate.
ISTM (and this is purely a guess) that banks and transaction processing companies may prefer to avoid DD cards for fear of causing people such grief.
Another possible explanation is the cost of clearing the payment. A bank set up to clear CC payments may have to pay more to get DD payments cleared. When Barclay's Connect DD first appeared it was common to have shops decline to accept them for amounts below ú5 because it wasn't worth it. These days of course a sensible shop keeper processes the voucher through Switch and it costs them almost nothing (last I heard) but not everyone will have that choice.
As far as I know processing any form of 'plastic' currency involves paying someone to deal with it and not everyone charges the same rate for all types of cards. -- (Battle hardened miner)

So charge a 2.5% processing fee or whatever.
The rest really ISN'T of interest to the merchant, and many banks insure for debt on a debit card too.

Debit also requires entry of a pin number, i know at the supermarket you need a pin to use a debit/atm card. so that means CCP would have to store PINs on their server.

Maybe its just that debit cards are different from country to country. Maestro/Switch I've only ever seen in the UK. In Denmark there "Dankort". In Canada each bank issues their own, that are usually Maestro/Cirrus network and not affiliated with credit cards at all, while things like Maestro/Switch/Dankort can be...
Just a guess...

Maya is quite correct, the Switch/Maestro has had the security measures and verification systems the same as credit cards for a number of years its why they are accepted as payment options along side creditcards by a number of third party payment systems such as paypal and click2pay

Visa Electron comes with the fraud protection of Visa cards, AFAIK. I use it to sign up. Effectively, it works as a visa card except with the credit linked to your bank account directly.

Due to their encryption/security technology, debit cards can not be used for a card not present transaction. The user has to swipe their card and enter a PIN into a physical device. So, since there is no physical store you can walk into, you can't pay with a debit card. Not CCP's fault.

Dude i think u like need to look at all the stores that accept switch/mastero and other debit cards online. Heck even domino's pizza online accepts my debit card and no i don't have to swipe it when the delivery guy turns. Also look at pay pal you can put funds into you paypal account using debit cards. Theres not a physical requirement on all debit cards.

Actually, now that I think about it, my previous answer is not a complete answer: in the US at least certain industries are beginning to be permitted to take debit cards without validating the PIN number (physical device security is necessary for protecting the PIN). These industries are being selected as recurring utility industries due to lower fraud (telephone & power companies & such). So, complete answer is: debit card PIN can't be protected without a physical device, and using the debit card without a PIN is only allowed for particular companies operating in certain low-fraud industries. CCP is unlikely to ever qualify in that category, so they won't be able to use a PIN based debit card for card-not-present transactions, so you can't use switch because there is no CCP store you can walk into. :)

Edited by: Lyra VX on 24/04/2006 21:16:24 I don't know about other debit cards, but Maestro/Switch cards certainly work over the net just fine. You enter the same details as you would with a credit card (car number, name, exp. date, security code), no pin number of anything like that.
I buy lots of things from online shops with my Maestro card - that's why I find it odd that CCP hasn't made it an option for players. |

ToxicFire, Domino's is not accepting PIN based debit online. They are processing whatever card you are using as a credit card. e.g. your Switch has a Visa/MC logo on it, and they are taking it as that. OP is talking about a true debit card, not a credit card. Nobody can take a PIN based debit online because a physical device is needed to protect your PIN.

Lyra, Maestro is MasterCard, according to: http://www.maestrocard.com/internetpurch/
So, these cards don't work for CCP? Have you tried verifying with your bank that it is enabled for internet purchases? Does it start with a "5"? If it starts with 5 it should be processed just on the regular credit card network as a normal MasterCard. I don't see why they wouldn't work (unless your card has particular industrties/transcation types restricted at your bank). It's just the debit card network you can't use without a PIN reader.

Btw, there is no direct relation between credit/debit card type and brand of this card. For example I have credit Maestro card and debit VISA Classic card.
Only few internet payment processors accept ATM cards (Maestro, Cirrus, VISA Electron...). Its better for VISA Electron owners, this card is accepted more often, but generally you can say that only embossed cards (VISA Classic, MasterCard...) will be accepted by any internet payment processor.

It does sound like DDs have greater security requirements than CCs which seems to tie in with my theory. OTOH until recently (February this year in fact) PINs weren't in common use in the UK for either CC or DD payments.
When I went to the US last November I was intrigued to find that most of the time there is no mention of PINs for CC, the reciepts often had the full CC number on them .
Twice I was asked for my Zip code. The first time was when ordering a pizza. As soon as I said the first part there was a pause then the woman said "Oh. It only allows me to enter digits. Oh well, never mind"
The second time was when I was filling up with petrol. Since the station was unnattended I just tried typing "111111" and it seemed happy with that .
What this says about CC transactions in the US of A I don't really know although having the full card number on the receipt is appalling. Ho hum. -- (Battle hardened miner)

In the US, there are basically two "plastic tied to money" processing networks:
1) Credit cards. Merchant sends some #s to the processing network, bank reserves funds for the merchant and can provide a real-time response. There is amazingly little actual security involved in this system ; some security is achieved via rules that merchants may not store the "CID/CVV2/CVC2" or actual mag stripe swipe data anywhere, most security is achieved through laws making stealing card #s illegal.
2) PIN based debit cards. Merchant swipes card, user enters PIN into a trusted 'black box' device which encrypts it with a local key and sends it to the bank for decryption/verification, who reserves money and provides a real-time response. Security is excellent here because the PIN never leaves that one trusted device and the card is useless without the PIN, but all of the security relies on scanning that PIN so it flat out doesn't work without the swiping device.
In the US, most cards (> 70%) support both credit and debit networks. Your average person has a Visa or MC debit card (or 2 or 3), which can be used on either network - the difference is mostly whether you sign your name or enter a PIN. Merchants will push for you to use the PIN option because it is cheaper for them, unless it's card-not-present in which case they don't normally have that choice.
Now, to use a true debit card without a PIN, processing on the debit card network, it is necessary to get approval to do "PINless debit" - which is only available to power companies and the like. Reference, e.g.: http://www.digitaltransactions.net/newsstory.cfm?newsid=385
As for how a Maestro or Switch card is processed without a Visa/MasterCard logo - I have no idea. Must be either a 3rd processing option, some part of the CC network that I don't know about, or looser restrictions on PINless debit in other countries. Maybe somebody who knows more about it knows what the deal is, I don't deal with international plastic-tied-to-money much because my company only deals with U.S. products, so the most 'international' I generally get is Puerto Rico.

I am not sure its CCP's fault that switch is not used. The card numbers and issue number for many Switch/Maestro cards is not the same standard as the majority of 16 digit credit card numbers from VISA/Mastercard.
I can use Switch for most if not all internet purchases in the UK but most American sites will not accept it.
Until Maestro renumber all their cards and remove the daft issue number then it will not be accepted in the same way as Visa/Mastercard are. I think some UK banks are in the process of doing it but not all.

I had this convo regarding Debit Cards with someone in Rookie Help yesterday.
He was of the impression CCP do not accept Debit Card's, which was new's to me seeing as I pay the sub with mine.
Also you give your card to a waiter/waitress at a restaurant right? So what's to stop him/her from writing down the card detail's once they've walked off with it.
They can then use those detail's over the phone, so your just as safe using a debit card for your subscription payment as you are paying for a night out at a restaurant.
Sure, lot's of people have Credit Card's .. but that's how you get into debt if your not careful with your spending.
CC someone can spend what I don't have, DC .. well, there's not a lot in the account i'm using for someone to try and buy something with anyway.

I can use my DD card any where on the net no probs here in the uk chip and pin is not even 3 months old as a compusler system.
The uk has all ways used signtures, you can use your DD card over the net with any uk compainy no problem.
The uk is how ever a very special place when it comes to things like this, for example you dont have to pay to have a bank account in the uk nor do you have to pay to have a credit card.
In the end each country in the eu may bbe very close geographicley they are far apart finacily (I have heard horror stories of uk peeps moving to france going over drawn by 50p and having there bank accounts closed until they put 50 p in.)
CC are prob just what people in iceland are used to and prob works out best for ccp, I know its a pain when paying for a computer game.
But in ccp's defense at least they make some alternative methods avvailbe.
Personally I only use my dd with uk compains and make sure i use my CC with forigners any way.

False. I'm yet to find an internet billing solution that won't accept my Visa debit card (as in, it has a Visa symbol on it, looks exactly like a credit card, has all the same data but debits direct from my account). Yes, this includes sites in the US. This is not a problem with debit cards, it's a problem specifically with Maestro and Electron, which for whatever reason are less widely-accepted than other debit cards

It's probably linked to the fact that basically no online retailer supports Electron or Maestro... As to it being the "most used" type of Debit Card, in the US maybe, but certainly not in the UK. Over here everyone uses Visa/Mastercard debits which, guess what, work anywhere a credit card works :P The answer may just be to ask your bank for a better debit card.
It's probably also worth noting here that Visa Electron cards can be either debit or credit cards, again reinforcing the fact that this is not about credit vs debit, it's about Electron/Maestro vs everything else

As an aside, in the UK (probably in other parts of Europe too) credit cards use exactly the same chip/PIN verification system as debit cards, and merchants are no longer protected against the cost of fraud if they are still using the old system for the more secure cards.
For those people with older cards which do not have the chip/PIN system built in, they of course still have to sign. ___________

1) Debit cards take the RL-iskies from your account 2) Credit cards bill the money from your account
Basically that's it. Banks issue credit cards and they've made all the arrangements with the CC providers for the authorization, chargeback etc. issues.
You might have millions of people using one banks debit card but you can also have 100's of millions people using some of the main brand credit cards. It's simple maths basically... And then if you select to go with one debit card, why can't you approve another? How many different kinds of debit cards are there in the world compared to credit cards?
There's your answer..
Edit: To make it more clearer, each payment method NOT supported by the 3rd party that handles the payments needs to be integrated separately. And from experience I can tell you it's no small task. Paypal, worldpay etc. only provide a small subset - but the most used - credit cards (and maybe some debit cards too).

Meastro is a Europe-wide standard for debit cards. However the issue is that CC provide protection to CCP and the card issuer if used fraudulently wheres as debit cards do not.
Personally I would never use a DC online due to teh lack of fraud protection on them. At least with a CC you can wait 56 days withotu paying for it

I'm pretty sure that Visa give the same protections on all Visa cards, credit or debit. And yes, Maestro is a Europe-wide standard, but equally OpenGL is an industry-wide standard. Neither has anything like the usage (in the UK at least) of Visa/DirectX.

The point still stands though, that Visa is (afaik) far more widely used that Maestro is.

And afaik as best I can tell by the issuing banks and their subscribers, Maestro must be far more widespread than Electron/Delta. Also, frex I know with Lloyds TSB that they offer you "an Electron debit card at first, with an upgrade to Maestro later". Mostly because I use them for my banking.
The actual figures are only in expensive market reports though.

Ditto. Even most American sites accept Maestro as a valid form of payment nowadays. Certainly, EvE is the only MMO I know (that doesn't have 'adult content') where you're forced to use a credit card.
Not accepted Debit Cards was initially the biggest factor behind my not playing EvE at first, until my step dad finally relented and let me use his card. It's also the reason I'm not an EON subscriber and why I don't buy EvE merchandise.
I'm nineteen, I just have no other reason to get a credit card! I'm not getting a credit card purely for the purpose of EvE.
For the record: I know at least three people interested in playing EvE who can't play because of the credit card requirement.
I wonder why CCP don't just use paypal (directly)... it's incredibly easy for a business to set up and use. -----

Just for clarification, read this. This page also links to similar cards. Note, that the card you are holding could be a pre-paid credit card, which works as a debit card, but it's still a credit card and thus will easily work with us. What elFarto has is almost certainly what I have, ie one of these (but without the Delta branding, which has now apparently been dropped). Seems it's a UK-only thing, though, which I wasn't aware of. In any event, it functions as a proper debit card (money removed from account directly upon purchase, confirmed using both ATMs and online banking) but natively and transparently supports any system which accepts a Visa credit card.

Then it's a delta. Which is decidedly odd given Lloyds TSB's long-tern committment to Maestro. *shrugs*, if you asked for it (or they thought you asked for it...)

Yup. It's technically a Delta, as I've said repeatedly (although it doesn't carry the "Delta" logo - apparently that's a branding change, which is why I'm hesitating to call it one, as I'm not sure that's correct terminology now). I didn't ask for it, it was part of what was given to me when I opened my account.
As to who does what, the link I provided earlier seems to suggest that Visa (Delta) is LloydsTSB/Barclays/Abbey/HBOS and Maestro is NatWest/RBS/HSBC.

Actually Maestro must be available in the US, because it's the only way my Canadian debit card works there. I have no idea what my card number is for Maestro, since the debit card network in Canada is primarily Interac, which afaik is only used here. Maestro and Cirrus (whatever that is) information is on the strip only.
We've used the same cards for ATM and in store purchases since the 80's ... so even though the rest of the world uses other things I doubt we'll ever change.

As does the Nationwide building society. When I opened my account I got a Visa debit card (no Delta or Electron branding) that's never been rejected anywhere on-line. Every site that takes Visa credit cards has accepted it just fine.
It would be nice if more banks and building societies gave these out. The Visa Electron that my bank (Bank of Scotland) forced on me when they phased out Switch/Solo cards is pathetically useless.

Ok, now i'm a little confused.
I own a visa electron debit card issued from the royal bank of scotland. Could i use this online to pay for EVE? As i'm only 17, i don't own a credit card and I cannot use a parent or guardians card. Will i still be able to pay for EVE or not, this bickering about Visa delta and electron is confusing, I'm a simple person.

However, to the OP, your assumptions are wrong on multiple accounts. Debit cards are far from being more common than credit cards, although the penetration of them varies wildly between countries.

But, my mate has NEVER had any trouble with paying for Eve since retail using his Visa Electron!!
