As it stands theres only a couple of reasons why you get podded anyway.
1: Lag, even with all settings off sometimes its unavoidable. ship goes bang... frrreezzzeeee... yep im dead 
2: Smartships (though not too many ppl have 2+ large Sb's so not much of a threat
3: Your stupid
I see no reason to improve pods.

tbh wouldnt mind a skill that gives a % chance to escape warp bubbles .. or somethin like that (pods only)
or upgraded pods you can buy the same way you buy clones that have an extra bonus to escape
