Hey guys.
I am a new player. Or rather someone who played back in 2012 for a few weeks and never renewed. I have decided to give this game another bash. Back then I loved the game but got bored by doing it all alone. This time I will look for a corp to join. Before I do that though I suppose I will have to 'not suck'.
Which is why I am in this thread.
I like the idea of doing missions. Killing waves of stuff and looting their empty, cold hulls.
So where do I even start? What ship(s) should I use? My funds is extremely limited so a cheap frigate with a cheap loadout would be best for now. I read up on things a bit and saw that the sisters of eve is a good place to start.
So if anyone can recommend a good ship that I can use (Caldari) and suggest a basic loadout I would luv u long time.
Thank you and see you on the dark side of the moon (aka missions). |

For Caldari, you have 2 path you can follow: missiles or hybrids. For missions specifically, I believe missiles are superior to hybrids for caldari hulls. All of them are bonused for range and tank, and while this allows the use of antimatter for pretty much any range, it also means you have no real options to get high damage output. As such, I would go for the following path: Kestrel or Corax for level 1 (Corax can do level 2s as well) Caracal for level 2 Drake for level 3 Raven for level 4 Beyond the Raven, you have the Raven navy issue, the Scorpion navy issue, the Rattlesnake, the Golem and the Typhoon fleet issue. All of those use missiles as their primary or secondary weapon system, along with drones.
I'm at work right now, so I can't give you loadouts from EFT. Try downloading it and fiddle with it for a while. It'll help you understand the different variables of your ship's performance. Ideally, you want to maximize your damage output and make your tank just sufficient enough to get you through tough spots. Generally speaking, Caldari will be against Guristas and Gallente, so kinetic and thermal damage will be the main source of damage. try to fit at least 1 of each hardener type for your shield, along with a booster of the appropriate size (or one step above). Use your low slots for increased damage, and while you're still getting your skills up and learning the game, fit a damage control in there too. It'll give you a chance to warp out if things get out of hands. |

What gave you that impression? "CCP is changing policy, and has asked that we discontinue the bonus credit program after November 7th. So until then, enjoy a super-bonus of 1B Blink Credit for each 60-day GTC you buy!"

Admittedly my experience is mainly based on other MMO's but surely the corps would require me to know what I was doing at least?

Not all of them. Besides, no amount of mission-doing will move you from "not-knowing-what-you're-doing" to "knowing-what-you're-doing." Srs or troll?
My first solo L4s took me like an hour each. And then I learned how to use http://eve-survival.org/wikka.php?wakka=MissionReports and now they take a fraction of the time.
Learning how to tank specific damage types, learning triggers, when to do a certain kind of damage for a mission, etc....
I did a bunch of missions, told myself: "there's gotta be a better way". Informed myself, and now I "know what I am doing". I might just be misinterpreting your post, but you get better at doing missions by doing missions.

You're right of course that running missions does teach you a lot of things, including many things that are applicable outside of missions. However I was being very serious, and my point was that missions are a very small slice of the game. From a corp-recruitment perspective, if I'm already willing to recruit rookies, an extra month a rookie spends doing missions really is just "an extra month." Its more time to learn game mechanics, perhaps an indication the player is on more solid financial footing, and more time to train skills. If you join a player corp for the first time (at least one that does stuff), you're going to be learning all kinds of things you would never know otherwise. If you want to mess around with missions for a bit before joining a player corp, thats fine, but you shouldn't be under the impression that its a prerequisite, or that it'll make you a much more attractive candidate, or that you're going to learn a whole bunch of stuff you wouldn't learn anyway. Security missions are generally not all that profitable for new players, you should start with going to low-sec and doing hacking sites and the low end combat sites.
The problem with security missions is that their difficulty scale with their payout, and the only way get any real isk is running level 4 missions, which to be reasonably effective requires you to fly a T2 fitted battleship. Until i had close to perfect gunnery skills, and was able to use large t2 weapons, i was making more isk with exploration in cruisers then i could doing level 4 missions.
If you are not afraid of fighting other players, then factional warfare is a really good way to make a lot of isk for a new player. FW missions and complexes can be a goldmine, but they are generally not very fun unless you like challenge of having enemy players around you. I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous. |

Well, we all need to start somewhere. Not everyone has the experience or the ISK to jump into pvp :P
I am hesitant to get into FW or PVP until I have a better understanding of the game and my ships. |

So join a corp and learn from the other members. Mission running experience will not make you good at PVP. |

From what I read and seen you writing it seems that you are mostly interested in group PvE content of the game... First of all EVE is different from other games in this matter - there is not much real group PVE content at all - actually the only real group PVE content here is Incursions which is working, but even that part is not evolving or being developed futher by game developers. And even if you are doing only PvE content you will always be at risk to get killed or at least harrased by those who are interested in PvP aspect of the game. And actually the more you learn and the better ship you get - the higher the risk will be. It does not matter if you are in high security system, low sec., or in the "nuls" - there is no place in EVE that is 100 % "safe". So you will not avoid PVP even if you want, or in other words if you "do not have the experience or the ISK to jump into pvp :P". So one thing you must make clear for yourself: if you stick with EvE, you'll have interaction with PvP aspect of the game - you'll have it even if you never go to PvP corp, o plan PvP actions against others yourself. If it does not sound good enough for you, better leave EVE for another game to save your tears and disspapointment in future. If you think that you can live with it, but still want to do more PvE oriented activities and prefer to do it with the group of other players, then you should read more about Incursions as this is the content which fits you most. You won't even need to join any corp for that and still you'll have a lot of interaction with other pilots. You can start by reading threads about incursions:
https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=206859&find=unread https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=328693&find=unread
There are incursion groups that help pilots with very low skills and you can grow with them in knowlege of the game and game funds almost right away. |

The Corp/Alliance I am in are very newbro friendly, we only take under 15m SP in fact. Check out a decent corp/alliance and they will help you in the game. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die. |
