Yar, guess that is the only way to go for now. Just take good care of him so you can harvest him later. Then, take care of him more in the future for the gift.
Lol i often joke about that too then say save the left one for me

Originally by: Kasibee'an They'll be growing you a new kidney soon. Recently an American woman had a liver transplanted into her, made in the lab from her own cells thus no fear of rejection. New technology also allows stem cells to be created from an adults own cells, negating the ethical issues of needing to acquire them from a foetus. There's a lot of amazing stuff on the way.
Yea heard about that too perhaps in 20 - 30 years, so heres to stem cells

Well, mine isn't that bad, but I've only got one Kidney, ahd the other taken out. The one Ive got left is above average though, so I do alright. Hopefully nothing'll happen to it. Doctors are great, but an incompetent doctor can almost be worse than nothing.

Im sorry to hear about your condition and was wondering what the chances are of getting a donated kidney from someone other than a member of your own family? Does it require both of you to have the same blood type etc? Killing Smurfs without prejudice since 1978 |

There is a chance of a live donor kidney from a non family member, Live donor kidneys are worth more than necrotic kidneys of course because they are fresher [lol]. But its harder to get a genetic close match with a non family member.
If i rmember right there is a series of 6 markers that need amtching up [the more that match up the better]. and the blood type should be the same. Also the donor has to be of the same race.
Also the donor goes through a rigorous interview process to assess them phycologically and to make sure they are not doing it for money. Also thy test the donor to see that HE?SHE will be okay with just one kidney.
So the likelyhood of a live kidney from a stranger non family friend is remote. Most likely id get a kidney from a drink drive victime in the christmas period because its the most likely time to get kidneys.
You know i dont think about this a lot but it would be strange to get a kidney from a dead person.

Damn, man. I hope they find a donor soonÖ.
On a happier note, I think they can now successfully clone and grow some organs without having to clone the rest of the individual (saw a news bit about that), so hopefully vat-grown kidneys aren't too far off. Then, as long as it's not a genetic defect causing your kidney problems, you should be able to get an exact genetic match with little chance of rejection. :) -Wrayeth

That sucks man. As a diabetic, I can understand a little of what you are going through, and I know how it feels when your body just sort of rejects you, as thats how I felt when I got the diagnosis for diabetis. Luckily I have avoided the kidney problems thus far, but I have to watch my diet.
Best of luck to you friend. _______________________________________________ I am the devil, and I'm here to do the devils work.

It's not been approved on the NHS in the UK for cost reasons. Will be interesting to see what happens. ______________________

I don't have ESRD, but I am a hemodialysis technician and I work at a free-standing (not part of a hospital) dialysis center with about 150 patients.
You might want to talk to your nephrologist and see if hemodialysis is an option for you. You will get a better clearance (that is to day, the toxins will be more effectively filtered from your system), you won't feel so bloated, and treatments are around three hours each, three times a week. Also, it doesn't require such an obsessive sterile procedure and you avoid risks such as peritonitis.
At any rate, the best thing you can do to keep from feeling miserable is to watch what you eat and drink. You can't take in the kind of fluids you were drinking before ESRD, because they're not naturally removed from your system. And you want to be careful about foods that are high in potassium and phosphorus.
It's possible to live an active, fulfilling life with kidney disease. Some of my patients are in their 80s and 90s and aside from kidney failure, they're doing great and actually look young for their age. On the other hand, a few of my younger patients (mid 20s-30s) don't take very good care of themselves, and don't mind their fluid intake or what they eat. They tend to leave feeling as lousy as they did when they came in.
One of our younger patients died at age 32 a few weeks ago. Kidney disease is a serious issue because, unlike other organ failure, it is systemic - it affects so many other organs in your body. It's as bad as diabetes and they often go hand in hand. A transplant won't always solve the problem, because if you aren't taking good care of yourself already, the transplant can easily fail. I've known patients who've had two or three kidney transplants and here they are, back on dialysis.
At any rate, I wish you the best with your treatment. See if one of the other modalities such as hemo might be better for you, and keep a positive outlook. ESRD doesn't have to be the end of the world. - - - - - "Never offend people with style when you can offend them with substance." - Sam Brown |
