I mean Wow. I've been using a crane for a while now. I have to say I love it.
No other transport allows the useage of a Full tank while permitting the addition of more WCS in the lows or fitting inerital stablizers to facilitate a faster to warp.
I get close to 80% average resists for my shields, and warp as fast as a frig with a T2 ab fitted, along with no need to fit WCS with the +2 strength.
It has the highest base cargo space of all the Blockade runners.. 250 more than the prowler, 1000 more than the Proator, and 500 more than the viator!
It has the highest CPU of all of the ships wich is great for the shield tanking using Tech 2. It does have the lowest Powergrid by 10 (prowler is 2nd worst)
It has the most mid slots of 4 meaning the ship achieves the best tank out of all the other, which primarily have to armour tank, or use a mix, excelling at none. While allowing for the usage of the low slots for any useage to facilitate more secure and safe travel..
Has the same amount of low slots as the Minmatar Blockade runner, Only 1 less than the Viator.
I am astounded at the brillance of the Crane! I was expecting it to be a middle of the pack Blockade runner, but ws enticed by the largest cargo capacity, and have discovered that it is by far the best Blockade runner. It's my oppinion, but the numbers, experiences I've had, and the flexibility of fitting was proof enough to me.
I also was able to tank 2 Hacs firing at me when I made a stupid mistake and auto-piloted to a gate instead of using an insta. got through , and survived with shields remaining!

Ohh and I can fit in the mid sacrificing the AB, for 2 T2 medium shield boosters, boosting for 40% extra due to the ship bonus/skills.
It generates 226 shield hps every 3 seconds.
I use 2 T2 invulns becuse I get attacked by projectiles and hybrids the most in my area of space. I get resistances of 48.25%, 79.3%, 77%, 79.3%
Also to note with 2 expanders you can fit 2 large secure containers, and a few small to increase the cargo capacity to close to 9k I codl make it more general by swapping 1 T2 invuln for a T2 EM hardner, and make itewually resistant to all damage types.
It's customizable to your area of space, and experiences.

I personally think that the Minmatar t2 indys are the best of the bunch due to their natural resistances, speed, and slot layouts, but blockade runners in general are awesome little things.
Not too sold on transport ships, though.

<3 my Prowler...
MWD, Thermal/Kin hardeners, 2xNano or 2xWCS
Base 4062m3, dang fast into its 9AU/s warp, 50-60-70-70 resists, MWD to 1600m/s or 2000m/s.
It's very effective at zipping around in both Empire and 0.0. I've had four VIRII interceptors chase it, a Raven attempt to get off a broadside, two HACs try to blaster it (while autopiloting), and a CDC camp try to instapop my first Prowler. It's still in service, and I think I had to reinsure it for entertainment purposes. I bought a second one so that I can keep one in Empire and another in 0.0.
But regardless... everyone seems to agree that blockade runners are a universally good ship class. ----------------------------------

Aggreed and it gets the native EM and thermal shield bonuses and reduction in cap use for the shield boosters, also has the same slot layout as the caldari one :)
Not to mention it has the cooler model

Dang this thread is going to cost me isk. I've had the freighter/t2 hauler skills for a while but I haven't really been excited to snag one up till now. Whats your fitting like? At the very least these could be nice for hauling ammo out to my various hangers in empire and 0.0.
Originaly trained up the skills to fly a freighter (though after decided I didn't really need one) then trained up the transport skills but I've been wondering if it would really be worth it (really that agile?) to pick one up. You sir have sparked my interest.

Blockade runners really are that agile. With a pair of WCS mounted, my Prowler has successfully evaded interceptors. It warps as fast as a Taranis and aligns like a Stabber (same mass). If you're running on instas, the only things that should stop your are a LOT of coordinated 20km scramblers, or a warp bubble.
You CANNOT go wrong with a blockade runner. At all.

i prefer my occator 3 times the sheild 50% more armour 1500 m3 extra hold it does have 80 cpu less but has over twice the pg it has better resists all through 6 low 2 mid 1 high slot its a fair bit slower base but the 6 lows make it very versatile and i think u can empty a can in 1 pop should u need to iv had 6 gsc with crap spanders

Edited by: James Lyrus on 01/05/2006 08:11:29 I agree, I love my Crane. It proved it's worth 10 times over when I had to make a dash to get some more parts for an outpost when building Borealis (we were short of 1000 construction blocks, so I had to make a run for it to Empire, which we made with about 3 minutes to go).
Personally I like using Nanos rather than inertial stabilisers.
And you missed the major advantage. It looks like a blockade runner.
To those 'considering' transports, bear in mind this: a deep space transport is bigger and slower than a T1 hauler. But not necessarily by very much.
That said, a Bustard has more base cargo than a Badger II, and 5 low slots, so getting 20k cargo isn't all that hard. Which is beaten by other transports, true, but remember that the Bustard shield tanks. 3125 shields, with 1000 second recharge (base) and 0/60/70/80 base resists (yes, EM hardening is a must). And you don't have to compromise on your hauling, nanofibers, expanders, stabs or inertial damping.
(875 cap with a 215s recharge base, also means you get quite a bit of shield boosting with it's shield boost bonus).
The Crane is a bit smaller than a badger - 4000 or so cargo (industrial 5) pushes up to about 6000 with cargo expanders. But can still tank, and travel fast with it.
Lets not forget the _major_ advantage of T2 indys - signature radius. The signature of a Bustard is 165m, and a Crane 125m. (Badger MK II is 250 signature).
So it doesn't necessarily let you take more cargo. If cargo hold is the only stat you're interested in, buy a freighter. What they do do though, is let you move cargo in relative safety. I have tanked 'hostiles' in transports and blockade runners. You just can't do that in a tech 1 industrial.
My _only_ grumble about the Crane is that it doesn't have enough power grid. With Engineering 5, it has 150 MW. And a 10MN MWD uses 150MW (Tech 2, 165MN). But given I can do 900m/sec with an afterburner, I don't mind that much not having a signature and capacitor penalty. -- We are recruiting

the worshipping here is based more upon blockade runners than the transport ships (tankers) so the occator is a different bag of fish there (slow ass mofo with no built in warp core strength)

Personally, I love flying my Viator. Use the high slot for a cloak; MWD, shield booster, and a spare module in medium; three nanofibers in low. Using a Y-T8 MWD, I'm getting 2887m/s MWD speed. With a T2 afterburner instead, I was topping out over 1000m/s. These blockade runners are the hauler equivalent of interceptors. Sig radius is nice and low, so it also locks cans quickly if you're using a tractor in high. All in all, a great set of ships that I used to think weren't so hot. Fly one, and you'll be a believer, too.
The cloak sure is nice to have for traveling through low-sec. Heck, I can fire the MWD for a second before cloaking, and still coast to the gate at a good speed. Even if you have to fly under cloak without an initial speed boost, you can get above 100m/s -- slow, but safe.
If I had the Amarr industrial skills, though, I'd love to fly their blockade runner. Not only is it a lot cooler looking than the others, it's got all those nice low slots.

Don't forget the prowler can fit TWO yes TWO tractor beams...
You can't get more uber than that...
In fact the time saved looting L4 mission, complexes, 0.0 rats makes the prowler so much better than the other ones as it pays for itself over and over again... |

I love my prowler~~
Whilist the cargo is somewhat limited, the lengths people will have to goto to not only lock you down but also long enough to finish you off far outweighs any space limitations.
Blockade runners aren't for ferrying ships or trit, after all.

Dang these are nice for speeding around I like it! But I'm still not sure I like my fitting still messing around with it.
Thinking something like this:
high - cloak mids - 10mn AB t2, medium shield booster t2, invul field t2 (get something like 75%+ resists across the board and 50% EM) lows - WCS (2+ from wsc 2+ from ship bonus)
Still not as fast as you guys made it sound but still it moves like an assault frig (Mine does about 650 m/s with afterburner and turns and burns like an assault frig).

My Opinion:
Best Tanking Hauler "when lows are fitted with expanders" --Bustard
Best Tanking Hauler "when you fly WITHOUT expanders" --Impel
Best Blockade Runner for survival by not being caught --Prorator
I'm not sure which Blockade runner does the best tanking, but this post certainly suggests the Crane does well at that.

Edited by: Kelgen Thann on 03/05/2006 06:00:49 Everyone loves the prowler because of the tank and speed.
BUt I still love the crane because I can utilize the lows for wcs, nanos, inertial stabs, or whatever, while having 4 slots for a shield tank.
The natural resists are thermal and kinetic. Thermal being the primary.
These resistances make it very strong to Hybrid guns, and resist half of any energy weapon very effectively, and a good portion of Projectiles using explosive, kin and EM.
The only weakness is EM but I use 1 T2 invuln Field, and 1 T2 EM hardner. and 2 Tech 2 medium boosters.
The crane gets +10% boost amount per level making it boost up to 50% more per booster! (I'm only at +40% )
That is what I love about the ship. It has the strongest shields, highest natural cargo bay, most mid slots at 4, prowler might tie it.Highest boosting amount bonus. Low sig radius compared to T1 and deep space transports.
I personally love the Kin and em resists. It gives me a tank that is effective for all damage methods.

Edited by: Kelgen Thann on 03/05/2006 06:02:35 I bought my crane through NAGA It only cost me 18.5 mil, and I had same hour delivery on 2. I thought for sure I'd have to wait to get one.
I'm just amazed at how valuable this ship has been for the small price. I've been able to run lots of stuff from 0.0 to sell and re-supply our operations in 0.0 with very little risk, and making trips consisting of way more cargo than a frig or cov ops would previously alow.
I am a shield tank nut, and like covering all areas that are possible. That's why the Kin and thermal resists fit my style so nicely. It covers most of all weapons damage types. nerfing all of their effectiveness.

I fly one of the Cranes now too. I agree with Kelgen. I was originally training for a Viator, or a prowler, but changed my mind because of the crane's attributes, but also because the crane and Bustard have the highest cargos.
It comes in really handy when you have to move a lot of crap and you have your lows decked with wcs, nanos and inertials to have a higher cargo capacity. It allows me to haul a lot more
