Welcome to the world of memory allocation in windows.
If you were using a real server os you'd be able to watch the allocation in real time, and even adjust the allocation model via os tools. In windows, well, you get to watch it crash and burn.
Hate to say it, but QFT really. Why in gord's name the servers aren't Linux boxes is beyond me...
Is Linux really that good? Maybe it is a hardware problem that CCP is experiencing? Maybe it is some kind of library files that have been corrupted during power spikes and are giving problems? Maybe it is human error? Thousand of possibilities but to say Linux is the paracetamol for server problem is just a bit inappropriate. I am pretty certain if there is a problem with servers running Linux, they wont be easy to fix with a click of a button.
2 things:
1) you CAN see memory allocation in real time on a windows box with the correct tools and Task Manager.
2) Lynx... pfft

edit: If you mean the browser, I recommend to read the what the lynx project was about. And as a remark, windows wasn't the first OS with a graphical internet browser and Internet Explorer wasn't the first on windows, but came two years later or so. And we've already graphical web browsers for linux for almost 10 years, so what's your point with Lynx
Anyway, the whole linux discussion is more or less pointless in this thread.

Originally by: Sephir Terien I must say, this is the first time I have been on a forum for an MMO (and believe me, I have played quite a few over the last 6 years) and never have I seen a thread similar to this one where the community has treated, not only the thread itself, but a representative of the game (in this case CCP) so politely.
As a writer for the PC gaming industry I surf forums quite often to keep up on the latest info, and gripes, about games. I tip my hat first to CCP, for responding to player questions with clear and honest answers, and second I tip my hat to the community for not flaming the forums and throwing temper tantrums.
Makes me glad I have chosen to play this game and will wait patiently for the server to be fixed.

Cool.
When WoW went down the other week (seems the net failed right next to their EU login server) it took several days, a few 10+ page forum threads, some forum thread locks, and a few bans; before people worked out what was up.

I feel blind and out of control on windows machines.
But maybe thats a result of maintaining linux boxes and clusters for like 5 years now.
<warning=techspeak> I can only admire people at CCP for still sticking with windows. From my own experience, having compared dual Xeon machines with HT and gobs or memory, linux 2.6 kernels with recent libraries can run circles around windows when running multi-threaded applications that only communicate over network and use their own storage just for printing logs. </warning>

Edited by: Darkhaired Beauty on 02/05/2006 16:59:04 I see people are having problems with the server tonight too, but it seems to be different people than last night. At least i have no problems at all and ive been on alot today and in the same systems i was yesterday (when i had lots of problems - couldnt even log on).
Not sure if you guys at ccp switched around some nodes or something. But you talked about the memory getting 100% allocated and released so i guess the nodes affected are kind of random for every reboot?

The server is probably flakey because it runs on SQL 2005.... I think. Its not got all its bugs sorted yet. And If its SQL 2000 it should know better...

Similar to an old quote, which I cannot attribute properly alas, which goes: "The Internet is a write-only medium".

What part of this mentions the db?:
Quote: Is Linux really that good? Maybe it is a hardware problem that CCP is experiencing? Maybe it is some kind of library files that have been corrupted during power spikes and are giving problems? All I see are a bunch of questions and none of them mentioning the db in anyway, last time I checked Linux wasnt a db, but who am I to argue.
