Don't do em, dude! It just diminishes ur sense of achievement- someone said earlier here about keeping up the "I will give up" 'muscle'- worked for me. V Best of Luck- I cried like a baby when I won.

Edited by: DJ Xod on 05/05/2006 21:54:32 Smoked almost 2 packs a day for 14 years. Got sick one thanksgiving for 2 weeks straight and decided that i'd had enough and dropped it right there and then. That was a year and a half ago.
I will admit to socially smoking on two occassions since then, but that didn't trigger me into starting up again. I do crave it at times, but I don't think I am capable of ever starting up again.
I had tried several times before this, but the longest run I had was 6 months. The worst part about it was more about habit and things I associated on a daily basis with smoking. Unless you truly have it in your mind that you want to quit, you're probably going to fail.

I've been smoke free for about 5 years now. I had to do it with the help of the patch...took me two times even with that.
But my very first time I tried quitting cold turkey, I went about 16 hours and then I started having severe shakes and cold sweats, and that scared the **** outta me.
You are dead on the mark Istvaan, its one of the most addictive drugs you can do. And you can buy it over the counter. I still miss it to this day, although the want, when it hits isnt as bad anymore.

Edited by: Uggster on 06/05/2006 02:38:28 Keep at it Brother, I stopped after smoking for about 14-15 years and the differnace is huge.
I can do things like get up in the morning without having to hack huge black gobbets of phlem from my lungs.
Also I can feel smug when other people try to quit and cant (and thats a great feeling it must be said)
Another winner is not having all the crap like****s and lighter with you all the time and forgetting them and buying more and running out and giving them away and all that crap.
I also smoked dope for about 10 years too and quit that along with the****s, the money I now save is massive, and I mean massive, over 200 euro a month minimun.
But remember that your not giving up anything, your healing a wound that you have allowed to stay open and get infected.
Edit : The **** word is the English slang for cigs that starts with a fa and ends with a gs

Hallo again Brother Benthor. Having quit very recently myself (1 month to the day almost) I thought I would pass on a tip. Keep a bottle of orange squash (cordial not fresh) handy at all times, especially for the mornings and buy yourself some throat pastilles.
Im not sure what causes the dryness but the OJ and cough sweets really helped me. No more waking up feeling like the sahara desert re-located to your mouth. Keep up the healing Killing Smurfs without prejudice since 1978 |

Good luck man, I hope you make it stick.
I was addiicted to cigarettes for about 11 years, started when I was 16yrs old and quit two years ago. I had made 3 attempts at quitting, the longest of which lasted 9 months.
The most important think is that cold turkey only works if you absolutely quit. No "this one is for ol' times sake..." because that puts you back on the path to full time smoking again. We all have habits when it comes to smoking, we smoke after a big meal, after sex and sometimes even after taking dump. You can add "playing EvE" to that list for me. The first few months will be difficult as when those instances roll around, you will feel what amounts to phantom pain in your smoking hand - as though something is missing. When you get past this stage you will be out of the woods. Keep one or two smoke-smelling shirts around so you can remind yourself once in a while why it was you quit.

Originally by: croxis For those geeks like me who like to know whats going on:
Nerves use electrical signals to fire a signal along to the next cell, however there is a gap between nerve cells (called a synapse) which the electric pulse can't cross. What nerve cells do when a pulse reaches the end of the line the nerve cell releases chemicals known as neurotransmitters. On the surface of the other nerve cell are receptor proteins. When enough neurotransmitters attach to enough receptor proteins the next cell fires, and so on. One of these neurotransmitters that makes us feel good is dopamine.
Nicotine is chemically similar enough to dopamine where these receptor proteins can't tell the difference, and nicotine binds to them. So with the first few cigarettes the brain reacts as if it is flooded with dopamine, which is why many people feel a rush with their first few cigs. However the brain wants to have normal function and will begin reducing its own dopamine production until normal function is restored. This process happens very fast, about 24-96 hours. Take away the nicotine intake and the brain tries to find other sources: Dopamine is produced by eating, working out, sex, drinking, and other things like that.
Dopamine naturally decays in the brain, otherwise it would build up and we would die in a violent orgasm as babies playing with their feet. An unknown chemical (or combination of chemicals) lengthens the decay rate, so more dopamine stayed around longer (the brains also normalizes for this). This is why people smoke after eating, drinking, and sex because it increases the duration and intensity of the feeling.
Here is the sucky part. It dakes the brain only 1-3 days to reduce dopamine production for increased nicotine intake. It takes an average of four weeks to normalize back. Its hard. Its tough, but it is doable and it does get easier after the first couple of weeks. And like someone above said, most people 'quit' 4-5 times before they smoke their last one for good. Wish you luck
Very informative, kinda explains why I smoked with greater intensity after each "quit" attempt. Before I quit for the final time (i hope) 2 years ago, I was up to 4 packs/day. ----

ok i smoked for 6 years (1 pack per day) and yesterday i decided to quit just like that... I havent touch a cigarrete for 20 hours now, and im always hungry :S no idea why... any advices from past quitters are welcome :D
GOOD FOR YOU!!! After 3 days, all the nicotine is out of your system...it's all a mind game from there on. I quit 5 months ago cold turkey, I had quit a billion times for no more than a week before going back, before I realized it was just a force of habit (a want), not a need. Hang in there!
Smoking suppresses your hunger. You'll eat alot more now (maybe good, maybe bad). Things will begin to taste diferent in a few months as well, believe me. For the better.

My Nan gave up smoking by using the nicotine replacement gum, she had a couple of relapses before she eventually quit and the funniest relapse was when I came into the room and she was chewing the gum AND having a cigarette!
Me: "Nan what are you doing?? You're not supposed to do both" Nan: "I enjoy a cigarette alot more with this gum!" At this stage her eyes were like saucers ROFL! Nicotine overload FTW!
Keep strong BB!
