Edited by: Womble God on 02/05/2006 10:41:45 Ra, the famous Brother Benthor. Congrats on deciding to give up smoking, Ive done the same thing. After the EVE meet in London I came home, threw my ciggies in the bin and quit. The first few days were the hardest but believe me it gets easier.
I had been smoking for almost 11 and a half years and a pack and a half a day when i quit, I havent had a ciggie for weeks now and i feel so much better. Keep it up my man, you wont regret it

The best advice I can give you, is that when you pick them up again (The majority of quitters have "quit" 4-5 times on average before they finally put them down for good) don't get down on yourself. Keep the "I need/want to quit" mindset going, and eventually after some trial and error (who knows, you might quit for good the first try, but it doesnt happen too often) you'll quit for good.
I tried quitting 4 times over the past 11 years, I eventually came to the realization that I am a smoker to the core, the mood balancing aspect of it is required for me to function as a person

Ahh, but you see, now is the time when you have that resolve. It's when something unexpected that comes up that causes uneasiness or sets your nerves off that the desire will increase tenfold. That's what you have to watch out for. As long as you prepare yourself for that possibility, and understand that even if you do break down and have a smoke or two, that it's not the end of the possibility of quitting, you'll be ok :) ----- Lighten up a little bit. It does get easier once u get past the 3 day hump.My advice is when u have something to eat do some thing straight afterwards as this is when i get the desire to have a tab.Inormally go and do the dishes or clean something.I am on and of fthe mat the minute i have an horrendous head cold so i have only been smoking about 4 a day so now would prob b e the ideal time foor me to quit. img.photobucket.com/albums/v367/foxxytiger/CaptainKikazEVEO.jpg[/IMG]

I think my biggest hurdles were always days 3 and 4, then the really big one at week 2-3. After a month the physical urges dissapear and most of the battle is won, then it's just the case of the mental urges.

First of all congratulations on having the intestinal fortitude to actually quit smoking.
Remember your first few weeks will be the worst ones so start by occupying your time and staying as busy as you can. Do this by spending extra time with your favorite hobbies. Drink water at least 6 ounces a day. Snack between meals on healthy foods, avoid junkfoods, and softdrinks. Finally start excercising even 30 minute a day is well worth it. If you already do then good job.

For those geeks like me who like to know whats going on:
Nerves use electrical signals to fire a signal along to the next cell, however there is a gap between nerve cells (called a synapse) which the electric pulse can't cross. What nerve cells do when a pulse reaches the end of the line the nerve cell releases chemicals known as neurotransmitters. On the surface of the other nerve cell are receptor proteins. When enough neurotransmitters attach to enough receptor proteins the next cell fires, and so on. One of these neurotransmitters that makes us feel good is dopamine.
Nicotine is chemically similar enough to dopamine where these receptor proteins can't tell the difference, and nicotine binds to them. So with the first few cigarettes the brain reacts as if it is flooded with dopamine, which is why many people feel a rush with their first few cigs. However the brain wants to have normal function and will begin reducing its own dopamine production until normal function is restored. This process happens very fast, about 24-96 hours. Take away the nicotine intake and the brain tries to find other sources: Dopamine is produced by eating, working out, sex, drinking, and other things like that.
Dopamine naturally decays in the brain, otherwise it would build up and we would die in a violent orgasm as babies playing with their feet. An unknown chemical (or combination of chemicals) lengthens the decay rate, so more dopamine stayed around longer (the brains also normalizes for this). This is why people smoke after eating, drinking, and sex because it increases the duration and intensity of the feeling.
Here is the sucky part. It dakes the brain only 1-3 days to reduce dopamine production for increased nicotine intake. It takes an average of four weeks to normalize back. Its hard. Its tough, but it is doable and it does get easier after the first couple of weeks. And like someone above said, most people 'quit' 4-5 times before they smoke their last one for good. Wish you luck ----- David - Proud to be saving the universe since 1984 Wrangler - Saving the drunks by drinking their beer since 1992 Saving the breweries by sending their produce to Wrangler since 2005 - Imaran |

Heh, I'd been smoking for almost 14 years when I decided to just stop all of a sudden. Course, waking up for the past 6 months with a hacking cough might have had something to do with it.
You'll probably find that you're going to eat. A lot. Seriously. I went from 132lbs to 166lbs in about a year after I quit.
Talking to oneself also seemed to help, especially when feeling a bit frantic. Laughing at oneself once you realize you've been carrying on a debate with yourself also helped.
In the long run though, I'd say the only thing that will really help you is sheer stubborn refusal to give up on something once you've made up your mind. That and a strong desire to breathe again.

One thing you'll love, is that after a month, you'll notice that you'll have a TON of energy just dying to be spent. The first 48 hours are the toughest ones. Your next battle will be having a few beers at home and not reaching for the ciggys. I strongly suggest you throw out any ciggs you have in the house, it's a lot easier to resist temptation if smoking entails going out to buy a new pack.
Also;
Try working out how much money you spend on smoking in a week, month and year. Budget on sepnding at least half what you have saved so far at the end of the first clear month. It should be a nice little "well done" gift to yourself so make sure it's something you want but really can't justify spending money on.
Steer clear of smoking friends in drinking situations, try a few non smoking bars with non smoking pals for the first few weeks. Just call your friends and explain that they are welcome to pop over to see you at home, but you don't trust yourself to resist the evil****s when smashed out of your skull.
Drink green tea when ever you want a ciggy. It works well as a habit replacement and is relatively good for you.
If you do find yourself smokin when drunk, try buying a cigar from the bar rather than a pack of cigs. That way you don't wake up with half a pack of****s in your jacket the next morning.

I managed to stop smoking and here are some tips for you:
1. It's always good to quit with someone. I did it with my girlfriend and it worked on so many leveles. For me it was a competition, I was set on lasting longer than her and I did
2. Avoid alcohol. At least in the beginning because you feel the urge to smoke when you drink and if you get drunk you just don't give a **** about cancer and stuff like that
3. Throw away lighters, ashtrays and everything you use when smoking just to make it harder to start again.
4. And this tip is abit odd but I heard it worked for others. When you feel like you really need a smoke, brush your teeth then. No science behind this but if it doesn't work you still get a fresh breath
When i stopped smoking the first days was not the hardest because your will was strong and you hadn't really suffered that long from the abstinence. The hardest was the period between 2-5 weeks after I stopped because then it started to get to me. I think it's like that for many because I hear more often that people fail after a few weeks rather than just a few days.
Oh and one more thing. I felt like life would be less fun without ciggarettes for some reason. Think it was because the social thing that comes with smoking. Anyways life isn't less fun now than it was when i smoked.

Advice: Always have something around that can absorb a punch without breaking. Sometimes all you need to do is beat the crap out of an inanimate object to satisfy a craving.
Good luck. --- --- --- ---

Originally by: d'hofren The first 48 hours are the toughest ones. Your next battle will be having a few beers at home and not reaching for the ciggys. I strongly suggest you throw out any ciggs you have in the house, it's a lot easier to resist temptation if smoking entails going out to buy a new pack.
Also;
Try working out how much money you spend on smoking in a week, month and year.
I made the economical thinking of my decision i will be saving 90-100 euros a month (not counting nights that i go out that i bust 2 packs day).
Staying away from smoking friends is hard cause i dont know many that dont smoke :P
The green tea idea seems a very good idea :) and will never again buy a pack, if i want to smoke one, i will do just as u told me :D ask some one to give me one.

Originally by: Pehova Mindtriq I managed to stop smoking and here are some tips for you:
1. non of my friends what to quit, but they are suporting me 2. / signed there .. i tryied :P and poor it out 3. not trowing anything away for one reason (i have 2 pack of cigarretes right under my monitor) to have enough force of will not to touch it again, this quiting is for good. 4. will try that :) specially after i mean where i fell the need the most 5. i must say social smoking was one of my weekest points last time i quited for 6 month... but wont be this time i insure u :)

One idea I read is to get a large clear jar, and put in the money you would have spent on cigs for that day into the jar (this idea prolly a bit more out of date as people use plastic to buy everything). That way you can SEE how much money you are saving, and after a month, go buy yourself something fun!

Havnt read all the posts as so many but i gave up after almost 10 years about 5 weeks ago and not touched one since, the craving does still surface, but then i think about it and the thought of the ash and dryness etc puts me off, weird. I can say for sure that if you eat when you have a craving the craving goes and I can now happily go to the shops and not purchase any tobacco prods
There is a long road ahead for you, but as a recently ex smoker myself i can say its very rewarding, especially as up here in Scotland its banned in all covered public places now, means i dont have to stand toking a cancer stick in the rain.
Very best of luck with the mission ahead!

Edit: i heard this tactic works quite well, put all ya f4g ends in a jar with a little bit of water and everytime you want a cigarette, open the jar and take a long hard pull. You won't want a cigarette after that!

Good man on deciding to kick the cancer stick, not only will your body thank you for it (you'll be adding years back onto your life expectancy) but your wallet will most defo approve (1 pack a day, that would be ú30 and week easy where im from)
And someone gave some technical aspect on why your hungry, basically its because the nicotine suppresses hunger, which is why many young girl these days, believe they will lose weight by smoking. ---- Join Us

I finally found a use for laziness. I would be sitting at home some evenings, with a couple of brews, and really fancy a cigarette.
"Nah...can't be bothered to get off my arse and go get any"
That combined with my natural ability be incredibly tight with my cash has resulted in a non-smoker!
Contrastly, the other thing that helped was all the exercise I do. Tightness in the chest when running is never nice.
Good luck, keep it up.

I'm constantly trying to quit smoking. Usually I get 3-4 days and then go buy a pack.
Lessons learned: 1) DON'T get drunk or high or whatever 2) eating junk food can kill cravings
Obviously I haven't actually succeeded, so YMMV.

So long as it stays at the levels of a normal cough/sorethroat you should be fine. I remember having that from when i was forced to qui for 2 weeks. If it gets any worse youll wanna check with yer doc :) ----------------

I thought I'd chip in my piece as it's not been mentioned here- I read Alan Carr's Easy Way to quit smoking- did the trick for me. I hate company endorsements, but if it works why not? I smoked for 18 years, gave up about 5-7 times, sometimes with years in between. Now, the memories of all those attempts help me to decide not to smoke- 1 moment with a smoke vs months/years trying to give up again- no contest!! Also, just because you have a need for a smoke doesn't mean you've not 'fully' kicked it! That was a hrd 1 to learn!

Edited by: DJ Xod on 05/05/2006 21:54:32 Smoked almost 2 packs a day for 14 years. Got sick one thanksgiving for 2 weeks straight and decided that i'd had enough and dropped it right there and then. That was a year and a half ago.
I will admit to socially smoking on two occassions since then, but that didn't trigger me into starting up again. I do crave it at times, but I don't think I am capable of ever starting up again.
I had tried several times before this, but the longest run I had was 6 months. The worst part about it was more about habit and things I associated on a daily basis with smoking. Unless you truly have it in your mind that you want to quit, you're probably going to fail.

I've been smoke free for about 5 years now. I had to do it with the help of the patch...took me two times even with that.
But my very first time I tried quitting cold turkey, I went about 16 hours and then I started having severe shakes and cold sweats, and that scared the **** outta me.
You are dead on the mark Istvaan, its one of the most addictive drugs you can do. And you can buy it over the counter. I still miss it to this day, although the want, when it hits isnt as bad anymore.

Also I can feel smug when other people try to quit and cant (and thats a great feeling it must be said)
Another winner is not having all the crap like****s and lighter with you all the time and forgetting them and buying more and running out and giving them away and all that crap.
I also smoked dope for about 10 years too and quit that along with the****s, the money I now save is massive, and I mean massive, over 200 euro a month minimun.
But remember that your not giving up anything, your healing a wound that you have allowed to stay open and get infected.

Hallo again Brother Benthor. Having quit very recently myself (1 month to the day almost) I thought I would pass on a tip. Keep a bottle of orange squash (cordial not fresh) handy at all times, especially for the mornings and buy yourself some throat pastilles.
Im not sure what causes the dryness but the OJ and cough sweets really helped me. No more waking up feeling like the sahara desert re-located to your mouth. Keep up the healing Killing Smurfs without prejudice since 1978 |

Good luck man, I hope you make it stick.
I was addiicted to cigarettes for about 11 years, started when I was 16yrs old and quit two years ago. I had made 3 attempts at quitting, the longest of which lasted 9 months.
The most important think is that cold turkey only works if you absolutely quit. No "this one is for ol' times sake..." because that puts you back on the path to full time smoking again. We all have habits when it comes to smoking, we smoke after a big meal, after sex and sometimes even after taking dump. You can add "playing EvE" to that list for me. The first few months will be difficult as when those instances roll around, you will feel what amounts to phantom pain in your smoking hand - as though something is missing. When you get past this stage you will be out of the woods. Keep one or two smoke-smelling shirts around so you can remind yourself once in a while why it was you quit.

Originally by: croxis For those geeks like me who like to know whats going on:
Wish you luck
Very informative, kinda explains why I smoked with greater intensity after each "quit" attempt. Before I quit for the final time (i hope) 2 years ago, I was up to 4 packs/day. ----

ok i smoked for 6 years (1 pack per day) and yesterday i decided to quit just like that... I havent touch a cigarrete for 20 hours now, and im always hungry :S no idea why... any advices from past quitters are welcome :D
GOOD FOR YOU!!! After 3 days, all the nicotine is out of your system...it's all a mind game from there on. I quit 5 months ago cold turkey, I had quit a billion times for no more than a week before going back, before I realized it was just a force of habit (a want), not a need. Hang in there!
Smoking suppresses your hunger. You'll eat alot more now (maybe good, maybe bad). Things will begin to taste diferent in a few months as well, believe me. For the better.

My Nan gave up smoking by using the nicotine replacement gum, she had a couple of relapses before she eventually quit and the funniest relapse was when I came into the room and she was chewing the gum AND having a cigarette!
Me: "Nan what are you doing?? You're not supposed to do both" Nan: "I enjoy a cigarette alot more with this gum!" At this stage her eyes were like saucers ROFL! Nicotine overload FTW!

Glad you're doing so well - stick with it.
For anyone trying to get up the courage to quit let me tell you; I smoked 30-40 a day for 13 years and it took me 2 weeks to give up.
The first day I got up and threw all of my smoking paraphenalia away, ashtrays, lights, ciggies, tobacco, rizla - everything. Then I had nothing to tempt me.
I often found that if I didn't have a Ciggie first thing in the morning, then I could go for a while, so on that day I managed to about 2pm before I felt like hurting someone. And heres the thing that worked for me.
I had a Nicotene lozenge, one of the 16mg ones. As soon as I'd finished it, I felt the whole urge, pain and anguish of not smoking go away.
I had two more that day, and for the following days I had 3 or 4. then I cut it down to two then one a day. By the end of the fortnight, I didn't need the lozenges anymore and I hadn't gone through the horrible pangs that I thought I would.
After that it wasn't long before I didn't worry about going into pubs or being with smokers! I tell you what, nothing smells worse to an ex-smoker then the smell of cigarettes, you don't realise how much you stink of it
I've never felt better and I've got more money then I ever had
Seriously, I don't consider myself to be the strongest willpowered person in the world, I think I lasted being a Vegetarian for a month!

Thk u for the bump :) and i have started to notice other ppl smells (shampoos, conditioners, perfums, whatever.. even the smell of people) ... and its quite pleasing to do so again :D ... though as u said, tabaco smells like crap for me, and i can hardly breath when some one is smoking right next to me :S

Congrats BB. I had decided to quit this year before it started and now that I have read the posts I feel more charged and confident.
I wanted to also thank all the folks here who have posted their experiences with smoking and/or quitting. The one that I found the most helpful was Capsicum's. I have nearly the same results from prevoius attempts at quitting.
As long as I didnt start my day with one, I was good for a while but very dangerous later in the day. So I will have to try lozenges. I know that I wont do it with willpower alone but as long as it gets done is all that matters.
Best of luck to all whom this thread inspires.

Or not. I'm not really going to disclose such information on the eve-forums. It probably doesn't involve a tin-foil hat though.

Edited by: Coniglietta Magica on 18/05/2006 19:49:49 I have been off the foul things for 1 and 1/2 years... I still have the urge to smoke every once in a while. Usually when I am stressed out. I think that is the hardest part. Although I feel better then I have ever felt, I dont get sick any more I can run and swim and scuba...
I quit by finding a very strong woman (my wife now) and by replacing smoking with sex.. Thats right! Every craving for allmost 2 months!

Nicotine gum is totally awesome. If it were cheaper I'd probably just chew it full-time instead of quitting.

Edited by: Brother Benthor on 31/05/2006 09:12:18 I quit but also got a smoke this weekend but not a cigarret, it was a cigar (Monte Cristo) to celebrate one of my best friends brand new house :) but i dont consider a Cigar addict, its more like a celebration mark for me

Good work BB !!
Are you smiling at mates as they serch their pockets for thier Ciggs/papers/lighter/rolling bacy/filter tips etc and knowing that this annoying little ritual is no longer a part of your life ?
I know I was at about this stage.
Keep it up, and the cigar does NOT count.
