Two weeks is a bit harsh. Maybe 6 months? The vast majority of spamcans and the like are years old.

They ruin the game environment, and cause lag... all these ad cans are hideous.
I say, all cans not used in 2 weeks should go pop!
so some may say they need them in 0.0 for stash purposes...well okay, I assume they are hidden away somewhere, so why not make these cans stay, and if they are at belts, stations, planets, moons, or gates, then they get a 2 week period. fair enough?

I think a month would be good. if you don't go to a region once a month, you probobly dont' need the Stash there. Or if you do, it's probobly out of date with the items you'll need.

1 month seems fair... besides if they are at belts, why cant they just bring them back home when they leave?
Also, lets make use of the billboards... use them like the new assembly line factories to post anything you want for a period of time.

With the current game, engine anything posted on the billboards would have to actually be manually patched into the EVE directory on every player's computer.
In addition, all content posted on billboards would have to be reviewed by CCP staff before being posted, or you'd get all sorts of obscene crap.

you already get obscene crap on escrow... even in chat channels. even in littered cans... theres no difference. And those that do post obscene got an account tied to it and can get suspended. and yes, i assume it would take a patch to do this.

You misunderstand.
Every image someone wants to put on a billboard would have to manually be put into everyone's EVE directory by the devs in a seperate patch.
The EVE client is not set up to download images from the EVE servers.

ahhhh... i'm not talking about images. all i would care for is just text... maybe just able to chose between your corps logo, your character image, or a newly designed logo with current Eve images. ... but like i said, no reason to even have images.

Let's round the odd. Every month a sec can which has not been touched has a 1 in 6 chance of going pop. Makes it more fun.

Actually, wait, no, secure cans must stay. No time limit must be introduced, or a way must be introduced to pay for a rent on all the cans with a single click.

Old abandoned cans? Put them to work! Have the system change the password/name. Then when we kill some NPC instead of the ships log, we get the location and password to a random (sorted by sec level)can someware. Like festavus or x-mas you won't know what you will find. Then a timer starts and if opened can is left, pop after a week or so unless moved and re-anchored. Sure some are empty, but at least a few are full of ? Surprise!

Where do you guys think portraits come from?
You have the choice of rendering locally or downloading from the server. It's a good idea to know what you're talking about before you open your mouth.
There's no reason these adds couldn't be just text like they are currently
And no secure cans should not be removed. They are a very neccassary mechanic of the game. People need to able to count them securely holding there belongings, decaying after a time is not secure. -=Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds=- |

To be honest... Just make it so that you'd get a message like...
"Concord has noticed that you have not used your 13 secure containers in whatever system for a month. They have collected them and placed them in your hangar at some random station."

If it isn't downloading images, how do we get the toons of the other players??
The client is set up to DL images, the bill boards change without a patch (most-wanted ads), player portraits, and an internet browser (of sorts, ie2.0 was a better browser...), so they are getting the images from somewhere, so explain guru of all that is eve (ya you DS, uber-forum-hoe) how is this happening, is it Fing magic or what....

Actually the image isn't downloaded. Your client renders it locally by downloading the parameters of the face. The file it downloads is quite small (I remember hearing ~50 bytes) There's a file in every Eve install that has all the backgrounds and faces and it renders them when needed.

Ok sure cans are littering the gates, stations, belts, everywere...
But lets stop a moment here, the begging for these longterm cans took some while, and now you want them to pop in 2 weeks or 2 months?
what definition of "longterm" are you using?
I say leave them as is and limit the charlength of names, hinders their use as a billboard and ad space and perhaps introduce a skill to limit the number of sec cans you can have?
But still I don't see the problem, just another part of EVE as far as I'm concerned... - -

You have the option of the server farm rendering it or yourself. As both myself and DukDodgers stated. -=Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds=- |

I could care less what is or isn't done about cans in space where they are allowed, but the cans in Security space wherethey aren't supposed to be anchored need to immediately go poof.

I think you are misunderstanding the use of "longterm" cans people wanted. The wanted safe secure cans... not a can that will stay in space forever. Its all just littered junk now. Junk that people clutter up gates with, clutter belts, and its fugly! Not to mention laggy.
I've been thinking, and perhaps CCP should implement along with their new "salvage" job, a way for people to salvage these old cans for minerals. If its a month old without any activity... it decays and changes color into a salvagable pile of junk.

Edited by: tyrol on 08/05/2006 16:15:13 well this is a topic which seems to come up on a weekly basis, but dont get me wrong, its a topic i would like to see looked at by the devs.
i reckon leave all cans in 0.0 space as they are, but anything in empire needs to have some sort of use timer, ie cans in belts must be accessed once a month, but cans at gates and stations should just go pop after a certain time anyway. i fully understand the need for people to advertise, but how many people actually read these cans anyway? i for one would rather do away with the lag caused, ive seen a belt take 5 seconds to load up on a pretty lag free day (and my computer is high spec) just because of the hundreds of cans in it.
