OH NOOOO!!!! DONT YOU DARE TOUCH MY DRONES!!!! pathetic , op is not whining about domi being uber or anything.
let's think a little. EVE has 3 primary damage systems which are drones, missiles and turrets. then, we can also divide turrets on hybrids, projectiles and enery turrets. all these systems came on 4 sizes.
drones: light, medium, heavy/sentry, fighters missiles: light/rocket, heavy, cruise/torp, citadel turrets: small, medium, large, x-large
every damage system has its own charateristics, good points and bad points. turrets have to deal with tracking, which make bigger guns unnable to hit small and fast targets. and then, every subsystem has its own problems, like cap use on lasers, or DOT on artillery.
turrets can be disabled with tracking disruptors, but also get tracking computers
then missiles, no cap use, good overall damage although less than turrets at optimal range, but it gets a severe delay, making it possible for the target to warp out before the missiles arrive, or even outrun them. missiles also suffer when hitting small and fast targets (at least cruises and torps), but they can get over it with tech 2 precission missiles (which rumours say are gonna get a little bit nerfed)
missiles should be dissabled using defenders, but they dont work very well. this, coupled with FOF missiles make them much less vulnerable to EW.
and drones, good damage, short range (although sentry drones can be nasty), no fitting requirements at all (other than drone space), no cap need, but they can be killed, and worst of all, crappy AI.
drone ships can be jammed, but if the jamming is after one succesful lock, the drones will keep attacking the target.
it is no secret that some ships are better suit for some tasks than others. most players would agree that missile boats are the best mission running ships, apoc the best tanker, phoon the worst BS, mega the most fun, domi a nightmare to fight against, geddon a great damage dealer, scorp/rook is primary, vaga is the solomobile, stiletto the best tackler, and thorax is the sex.
overall, there is quite a nice balance. of course, there are few reasons to fly some ships, and other ships have some issues (like blasterthron, or typhoon).
so, do you think that if apoc got bonus to cap use to ALL energy turrets it would be overpowered? or if raven fot bonus to every missile launcher? or mega to every hybrid turret? would they be overpowered? i really dont think so. unless you know you are gonna face a lot of small ships, it is not worth to fit smaller guns (if you got the grid/CPU). even with bonus to heavy missiles, i would not fit heavy missile launchers on a raven, unless i was going to do some level 3 missions, and then the bonus is not so needed.
i dont think anybody would fit medium lasers on a geddon for pvp, or medium blasters on a mega.
but domi is different (and all drone ships). you dont have to choose the size of your weapons at the station. you carrie all sizes with you, and then you choose what's better after you know who is your enemy. that is a great advantage that only drone ships get.
we could argue that missile ships can also choose damage type on the fly, but most of them only get bonus to kinetic missiles (at least caldari ships), only the raven (i think) get bonus to every cruise and torp regardless of damage type (so, yes, maybe it should get bonus to only kinetic cruise/torp), and anyway, they only get bonus to one size, not all of them, so if you fit heavys, you get heavies until you dock.
so drone ships, not only can choose the best size for theis drones, but they also get a bonus to all of them. that makes them able to fight every ship with just one fitting. and that is a very big advantage.
anyway, does anybody doubt that a domi would not kill any cruiser or frig without this bonus? and is anyone going to use light drones against a BS?
same with ishtar or vexor. arent mediums drones good enough to fight
