Edited by: Sparc Ambertin on 20/09/2003 16:26:10 Skills you need: - Electronic Warfare - Propulsion Jamming
Hmm, everything else is optional and depends on the tactics your mates use ( Linking, Missiles, Drones ? )

Speed always helps so that navigation skill comes in handy. and if ur a missile boat train up the skills to egt the missiles their faster for quicker damage which is needed.

Same skills you train as for a battleship except for battleship/cruiser and med/large weapons?

if you wish to be a dedicated full-timer eat sh*t and die, my frigate will blow you to bits in second, sorta frigate pilot then train up everything as usual, bar cruiser/battleship specific skills (i.e med weapons, spaceship command lvl3).

I just bought all the skills that I could use with a Frigate. So all of them except med/large turrets and the ship skills.
Not saving up for a cruiser means you can get more skills faster.

Eh? I'm confused. S0cks took the time to give you a straight answer to your question. There's no need to respond like that...
[Added bit]: I think I see what you might be getting tweaked about. When she wrote Quote: if you wish to be a dedicated full-timer eat sh*t and die, my frigate will blow you to bits in second, sorta frigate pilot
I think she intended it to be read like Quote: if you wish to be a dedicated full-timer "eat sh*t and die, my frigate will blow you to bits in second" sorta frigate pilot
. In other words, she's not talking trash at you, she's describing what sort of frigate pilot you might want to train.
Of course, I might be completely wrong and you might be getting angry about something else. In that case, see my first bit at the top...

To be an effective frigate pilot you need speed foremost. EW is useful, but don't hybridise your frigates (ie, if you are flying in a 10 man frigate formation, kit 8 out for max pain, 2 for EW and nothing else - all ten of you kitted out with a mix of EW and pain will be a mess and compromise your effectiveness).
I recommend acceleration control skill highly, and also missile launcher, heavy missiles and cruise missiles. The best way to use frigates is as missile boats loaded with a mix of missiles for differing damage types. -------------------------------------------- Dead

Rifter is a good compromise, kitted out with two missile launchers and two guns (you should just be able to load one cruise in each missile launcher, pirate drop M12 type). Its fast, though pretty useless as an EW platform. Medium slots, best shield booster you can get, best afterburner you can get. Low slots - depends on what guns you want to fit, close in guns you should have enough power to fit one or two damage mods, long range guns your gonna need additional power probably so youll need to fit soemthing that gives power, either a straight power mod or the pwoer diagnostic which gives a useful boost to shield and cap max and recharge as well. Of course, all depends on your skills and youll need a good set of skills to get the best out of a Min ship

Ooops forgot the skills. As everyone has pointed out any skill that improves your speed and maneouverability - navigation, the afterburner skills, ship command, frigate of course. Missile level 5 to allow you to use cruises against cruisers, dont bother with torpedoes as frigates cant use them. I wouldnt bother with rockets but would train up standard and heavy, wouldnt bother with FoF, not sure about defenders probably your best defence in the frigate is speed and maneouvering. Wouldnt bother with drones as generally most frigates dont hold enough to be useful against cruisers. Electronics and engineering to allow you to squeeze the best modules in. Most of the engineering skills - especially shield and power operation/management. Gunnery level 5 to allow you to get trajectory analysis, most of the other guns skills to level 4 (probably best to pick a weapon type and stick to it, if going for projectiles dont bother with the skill that drops the cap use of turrets whose name I cant remember).
EW I have little experience of, its more of a personal preference and if youre fighting solo it really only suits certain ships. If youre fighting in a group it may be something you can omit altogether if someone else if always going to be doing the EW.

as Shintoko said, I was not flaming you, I was merely stating whether or not you wanted to just fly a frigate around and shoot a few stuff, or be dedicated full-time frigate pilot like myself...
sorry for the misunderstanding.
Ss for what Miso said. having two EW pilots is risking it a bit. We have done ALOT of frigate killings. And everyone of use outfits with EW. Why? Wel llet me give you a situation we got stuck in:
We see a battleship. It has 14 radar sensors. Between all 4 of us we have 16 jamming strength. We decide to give it a shot. Unfortuantly when exiting warp a member CTD. We no longer can jam him. Everyone ends up in pods.
Its so much better to have an array of EW. For example if one guy with a disrupter is out of range, another guy with one may be in range. Then a guy with a scrambler can get close to lock on, and let the guy with the disrupter recharge his cap.
If you have plenty of jamming, warp scrambling, and webifying between you then, if one pilot drops for some unknown reason, its not such a big deal.
Trust me. I know.
And just because you can't fit the best of best frigate weapons, doesnt mean it'll take forever to kill em. And persides, if they are jammed, doesnt matter if you have pea shooters, they'll eventually die.

S0cks is very much right and it's our primary tactic to operate in a decentralized manner so that losing pilots either through combat or other reaons has no effect on our jamming performance.
Every pilot in FSM carries 3 EW modules, a warp jammer a webifier and a sensor dampener (until they inevitably get nerfed, we used to use normal jamming EQ but this means we don't have to carry all our modules around with us and refit at stations) no matter what ship they fly. With this setup it doesn't matter if we lose half the squad we're still jamming effectivly. And it specifically doesn't matter /which/ half of the squad goes down.

Socks - have to disagree with you there. Hybrid frigates suck in my experience. Specialise and fly as a unit and you can lock down battleships no problem.
Speed is everything - ive lost count the amount of times ive been gate camped by a battleship after a raid, only to escape solely cos of the speed of my ship. If you fill meds with EW on a frigate, then you lose speed and it could cost you your ship.

Edited by: s0cks on 29/09/2003 11:52:14 Miso you obviosuly do different things to us. We don't usually run into gate blockades, we equip to fight whoever we see. We sometimes even are the blockades.
The base speed of most frigates is by far enough, and when attacking people we jam them anyway. If the jamming is broken and the target aquires a lock and starts killing us one by one then we jump. I personally have lost probably only 3 to 4 frigates within months of play. 2 of thsoe time due to NPC's while we killed a player, and the other times when we were fairly new (not gr8 at PvP). Now I find it hard to loose my frigate, and I have never been podded.

Probably...
I don't take part in mass fleet fighting. Naginata corp specialises in hit and run raids and skirmishing deep in enemy territory, so speed is very important for us.
Its interesting to see how people do things tactically. Your tactics obviously work for you, but they definitely wouldn't work for the way we fight. Can you lock down and kill battleships well with that setup? I'd be interested to hear how it copes with multiple BS's... -------------------------------------------- Dead

I'd be interested to hear how your tactics deal with multiple Battleships actually.
Jamming can lock down two battleships or 3 cruisers when we fly at full strength (5).

So what about going against someone using passive targeter? Don't see how sensor jamming works there. And if your prey doesn't use an MWD because of the shield and cap reduction they probably aren't running away from the fight so warp jamming and webbing them is a moot point. Not everyone runs around with that config. but I've seen it used effectively. But in most cases Frigates need the above ECM and propulsion jamming skills. Just a thought...

3 ECM jammers = BS lockdown
We usually run around with 6 to 10 frigates (2 ecm on each). So we could prolly jam 2, maybe 3 with our setup - if we knew exactly wot we were doing (i.e who jams who). Most of the time we go looking for a fight. We won't sit and organize our attack for ages... if we see some1 we just go for it.
Jamming is essential for us, speed is just an added bonus.

Horses for courses I think is the expression. We fight very effectively with dedicated ew ships and dedicated kill ships. But we have to have speed because of the nature of our work. If you're just flying about hunting opportunistically, then I agree, speed isn't a factor. But flying deep into alliance space, blowing the crap out of a mining operation and then getting the hell out requires fast frigates. -------------------------------------------- Dead

I personally feel that you guys forgot to mention Engineering? The reason that is that even though I am a newbie I find the powergrid and cpu on frigates suck. I saw someone mentioned Power Grids but I feel these frigates could use some more cpu and power as thats always the problem I run into. Though thats maybe just me that has that problem?

I have composed a list of skills and levels that I personally use:
- Electronics Warfare II - Propulsion Jamming II - Weapon Disruption II - Electronics III - Sensor Linking II - Signiture Analysis III - Targetting I
- Energy Emission Systems III - Engineering III - Energy Pulse Weapons II - Energy Grid Upgrades II
- Gunnery III - Small Projectile Turret II - Small Hybrid Turret II - Small Energy Turret II
- Mechanic I - Hull Upgrades I - Repair Systems I
- Missile Launcher Operation II - Standard Light Missiles I - Rockets I
- Navigation III
- Science II
- Spaceship Command I - Minmatar Frigate II - Ammar Frigate II - Caldari Frigate III - Gallente Frigate III
These skills are all I need to be an effective al lround frigate pilot, being able to use all kind of frigate weapons and modules. I would train up Heavy Missiles too if I was planning to fly Kestrels.

Engineering Level 4 is pretty much required no matter what you fly so I guess we all forgot to mention it. With level 4 engineering I can squeeze 42 grid out of my Merlin and to be honest I have trouble using it all.

Just out of curiosity, whilst you can jam the battleships guns with EW how do you cope with FoF missiles and combat drones. Would have thought it fairly hard to kill the battelship and deal with 10 combat drones at the same time?

I believe in dedicated EW ships, which means you need not deal damage at all apart from defensive measures. The answer to your question would then be Smartbomb(s).
In my experience, specialist frigates composed as a team, will be more effective than a squadron with ships which tries to do it all.
For a frigate pilot, I would want to boost both engineering AND electronics to the max (lvl5). ----------------------------------------------

Combat drones are suprisingly ineffective on their own, even ten of them at once against a lone frigate, espechilly since most people don't use the drones that cause EM damage. As a result it can take them ages to even dent one ships shileds, by which point (since you have the main target locked down indefinatly) you're already knocking them out of the sky either on purpose or with splash damage.
They are in fact far more effective against cruisers and battleships who don't move around much and they can just cloud around them and keep shooting.
FoF missiles are easily taken care of with defender missiles. As are all missiles. When you don't have to worry about what your target's guns are doing it becomes a very leisurely job to deal with his attempts at countermeasures.
