I've just downloaded the new renders by trinity. The ships look awesome!
Does that mean that stations and jumpgates will get the same treatment? What about giant cans and jet cans? What about drones?
At this point I realise that there are actually tons of stuff to remodel to make the graphics upgrade successful. Keep up the good work!
One thing I would like to bring up is the sounds in the game. Will they get some love too? Is it being looked into?
If anyone has ever remembered the video "Angelice Prime", the missiles sounded so "full" instead of sprats and plats of our rockets/light missiles. Even torps used to sound so much more devastating.
Autocannons, artillery, railguns currently sound very useless compared to hearing the amarrian lasers. Don't tell me about DPS and whatever, I just want them to sound better!
If you looked at the videos posted at www.eve-online.com.cn (EVE china), the ships have the nice "humming" sound to it when your camera gets reasonably close. I don't hear any of that in-game. When the camera moves around and ships zoom past the video also features some "zoom" to the ships (frigates). I don't hear any of that in-game too.
Well honestly I wouldn't want to hear all the sounds in a fleetbattle, but I think it should still be done to make gameplay more immersive.
Give EVE the epic feeling and quality it deserves!

got to agree, eve's weakest point at this time is in audio: it's currently messy, over-repetitive, intrusive, and causes more lag in battles. I daresay 95% of players shut the sound off completely after a while.
Definately in need of a foley artist to work on more audio elements of eve. I know I could think up the content, but I sure as hell could'nt implement audio to save my life.

I'm probably one of the only players who uses sound, even in PVP...and that's just becausee I'm so damned stubborn.
It definitely needs improvement. -------- Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk [04:21:15] Mebrithiel Ju'wien > Nik's bio 4tw btw [07:38:53] Graelyn > Nikolai for Dev 108!

All I want with the sound it the GOD DAMNED warp sounds to be turned down. I mean COMEON! Why does it drown out ALL other sounds. It's SPACE FOR CRIPES SAKE. All the sounds are produced from out pods sound database. You dont' think pod pilots can go into theri ships version of Windows XP and edit the god damned sound files?? Sheesh.

One very important feature we NEED is to be able to use the client to adjust/edit the individual sounds without "hacking" the client, which is of course against the EULA. -------- Tom Thumb > for a nut case you rawk [04:21:15] Mebrithiel Ju'wien > Nik's bio 4tw btw [07:38:53] Graelyn > Nikolai for Dev 108!

The sounds could use some loving..
A new cloak sound (especially for actual cloaking, and not the invisibility stuff when youjumped)
Sounds in belts, that of roids colliding (i dont care if they arent actually colliding, i want some atmosphere damnit)
Impact sounds, different ones for shield impacts, armor, and hull, depending on projectile and damage done. (so no GRRRHHBOOOM sounds for glancing hits)
Ship destructon sounds (with eyecandy)having several subsystems go boom before the entire hull nukes itself.
I could go on.. and on.. and on..

Check the devblog for graphical upgrades :)
I'm glad to see more capsuleers interested in giving their aural firmware a boost.
Part of my other worry is that with the new graphical upgrades, the game won't sound as good as it looks which will totally spoil it.

Yes, the sound is abysmal and could use an upgrade once in three years.
AFAIK CCP has done very little to upgrade the sound since launch. Which is bad, m'kay?

Considering we have the third retail UI, the 1.5th grafics engine and a lot of new content in game it might be time to get a replacement for the currently used beta sound system that had been promised to be the first part of EVE to be worked on as soon as the game goes gold. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. I think sound isn't used enough to really require any work on it (At least not at this moment). Most of the time it's off for any kind of fleet op because of lag, and would probably be off if it weren't, as most people need to hear TS

I use the sound to, but only cause I've a set of logitech z5500's I had to sell my soul to buy, and I have to justify them to my girlfriend.
The sound is very dated, and unfortunately portrays the game as being very dated too.

I like the sound, especially the warp sound, which was one of the big things that attracted me to Eve. It was just so cool. Getting some nice 5.1 sound into the mix, with EAX support in the environments (gas clouds, in-station, etc) would be grand.
CCP also needs to get off the fence regarding this Jukebox modification/EULA issue. The EVE songs are great, I have them in my iPod playlist, but sometimes thumping trance is king (mmm 5,1 sub). Anyway, they started down the situational music road with the complex music, it might be fun to continue down that route with more songs.

I find its easyer to just turn off the music and use winamp/foobar2k/blah.

I find i turn the music off, and just have the game sounds on, I only really want them on becuse i alt and tab between two chars and hand to hear if one if beeing locked when using the other.
How ever I find that eve sound gets really choppy when you run two clients, and in the end you have to trun off the sound on one account, to get rid of the sound lag. ----------------------------------------------

I have to say the sound isn't too bad - ah well I mean the music. One of the things that used to give the game atmosphere back in Ye Olde Days when I was swayed to play by such considerations. The problem I have is the Audio lags the client to hell on my PC. I don't get trouble like this with other games I play, so I don't think it's my motherboard or drivers.
I suppose it needs to be more efficiently managed (coded), like the graphics!

Yep, sounds need a bit work. Regarding Autocannons, I would love it if they had a constant rattling sound instead of the short volleys they do right now. It wouldn't fit with the way damage is applied, but still it would be totally awesome i think.

Caldari engines have definitly different sound compared to minmatar engines, when undocking I can tell that there is a blackbird or caracal accelerating - haven't yet listened to an osprey or moa - from their specific sound. ******************** Those without a tribe can only keep their word.

If you think about it sound really is important!
Imagine..say WoW without sound, or CS without sound or guild wars without sound. I'm sure those games won't be as fantastic as before.
Whenever I'm playing eve and my non-eve friends are around and they heard the warp drive for the first time all of them commented that it sounded quite good.
Autocannons in EVE just doesn't sound like ACs. They fire in short bursts instead of constant rattles.
Engines definitely need to sound better with distinct hums for each race and ship class(bs,bc,cruiser, dreads, etc) at least.

With two clients on one box, sound is a big nono because it is causing a lot of problems when you're in a fight.
That includes music as much as all the other nice to hear when solo sounds.
I tested it over the last couple of days and I am back to soundless EVE again.
EAN and EVE do not work together. The EVE soundsystem even changes settings in the sound driver ... And that happens only with EVE. --*=*=*-- Megadon CCP wanted a well known artist and celebrity to test the new font so it's approval would be well known. They got Ray |

Some of the sounds are pretty good. There are a fwe sounds that could use a little polishing, but that boils down to personal preference.
The unmutable warp sound makes it unbearable after a while. The performance problems when you're running two clients are just bleh. Edited by: Gothikia on 11/05/2006 00:32:09 I have to agree, sound most definetly has to be improved. As lots of folks know it causes major lag in the client, perhaps with the trinity upgrades shunting the graphics processing mainly to the gpu, the sound architecture will get some loving and use the cpu space that the graphics took up.
For the vista client they NEED to do this anyways becuase of the new driver models and the 64 bit float sound architecture (w00t! no more int32 sound!) So i think CCP will work on this, they said right from the very beggining that they wanted to get the sound right because so many other companies got it wrong, and invested heavily and done alot of work on the sound itself, only problem is, it dosn't work all that well.
Whenever I can i have the sound on, only times i dont is when im in a large PVP op.
EDIT: Maybe we should make a cute flash like GoonFleet and we might get what we want...

I have to agree with people when they say the sound is pretty poor. However, even with the audio being low quality I still have it enabled, the world just feels to empty if I'm playing in silence (and listening to my own music). |
