Many thanks to CCP for posting the Trinity pictures in the Dev Blog. Trinity is defininely a step forward. The new Tier 3 Amarr BS is looking fantastic too.
A couple of small concerns though.
The main concern is that the surface of the Scorpion appears to be cluttered. In the past one of the noticable design features of Caldari ships was the emphasis of planar-slabs of geometry, like the surface of massive office buildings thus evoking impressions of their capitalist mentality. This has now been lost on the Scorpion with the introduction of additional gratings and ridges.
I get the feeling that just adding Trinity effects and tweaking the texture map slightly would create a better Scorp and be easier to modify the remaining Caldari fleet.
The next observation is the Scorp and Megathron do seem quite dark - but maybe that is Trinity taking into account of the ambient light.
The other minor observation (and is probably being handled) is that the mining laser and weapons on the Impairor still need updating.
Other than that, the changes are a definite improvement and a step closer to perfection.

...actually, imho, the new scorp design, even if it's still just a work in progress, realy demonstrates the high-tech, no-frills, all-out-war mind of caldari imho. I always belived that, contrary to the gallente, wich favour a more organic and more eye-pleasent design of the ships, or a more traditionalistic and strong design of the amarrian, or even the rushed design of the minmatars, caldari ships were made with utility and performance over design. ----------------

I think it's a much better style than the old one. It's no-nosense military design. I cannot wait to see the rest of the caldari ships, this new style is definitely going to benefit them.
Yes, the ships look darker because now they self-shadow, instead of having full ambient lighting like before.

I agree, but the old design concept of the Scorp exemplifies that more in my mind. The newer design looks more - industrial - something that the Minmatar ships are associated with. In fact, I'm wondering if I'm starting to see some patches of rust on the new Scorp
Prefer the cleaner lines of the old model, which gives a more "no-frills-alien-radio-noise-death-machine" feel to it.

Edited by: Xerxes X on 10/05/2006 13:24:24 Thanks for the confirmation on the self-shadowing. I still think large flat surfaces look cooler on Caldari ships - like the large architectural expanse of modern capitalist buildings (but with missiles and engines! ) and filled with "fund-managers-with-guns"

The skin for both the Megathron and the Scorpion do seem to be the navy issue... probably being used at E3 as they'd look 'cooler' and more menacing.
However, seeing that the difference between the navy issue and the standard issue will wind up being a change in paintjob (aesthetically speaking of course), I do hope they make the base scorpion skin less cluttered. Far to much going on there for a Caldari ship

IMHO, The Abaddon looked fantastic... and the rest of the new ships looked terrible. Same models, just with more crap on the surface, basically. Way too cluttered and dark.
Apparently I'm just about the only person to not like any/many of them though. So just ignore me...

Of course it did, it's a concept. Concepts don't have to be rendered in real time. -- Terror Legion - Recruiting |

Then I don't recommend you get a creative job, because you hear a lot of that sort of thing. I've presented designs in the past to be told straight to my face 'omg its so boring, looks terrible'. You just have to get over it and the best way is to tell yourself that the person who said it has no clue about aesthetics. Then I see the same guy drive off in an ugly little car back to his mock-Tudor house, and I feel a little vindicated. In short: it goes with the territory and you can't please all the people all the time.

"These are works in progress. It's not final stuff, just stuff we're showing to the press (and you all of course) to illustrate the new level of detail. The creative director has even made some changes to the ships in the last few hours here in the booth at E3."
The Scorpion looks like she's covered with hand-painted concept sketch rather than with rendered high-detail texture, so hopefully she'll look quite different once done. Especially these hideous windows ;.;

Cry me a river? I didn't say I could do better. I simply expressed my opinion regarding the update. I kinda just figured we were all entitled to do that (you know, since everyone else is doing that)
And I can't imagine someone would be that scarred by the knowledge that not everyone loved everything they did (omg, the shock! )

Edited by: Xerxes X on 10/05/2006 14:52:07 At this point I'd like to underline how lucky we are to have a game like Eve run by a company like CCP who are willing to preview their forthcoming content and (to a certain extent) respond to comments from their player-base. In the long run it is beneficial to both parties.
Like me, many of my fellow players are passionate about the Eve universe and its stylistic and culturalistic heritage.
While I would say that none of these models are horrible (in fact the work gone into Trinity make them all look TECHNICALLY beautiful), many of us are passionate about maintaining consistent stylistic individuality between the races. The exception to this is the Minmatar race, who are still evolving their technology and stamp of individuality (however I wonder if it is too early in the storyline to introduce a radical surge in Minmatar development).
So, to me, the breaking up of large flat surfaces on the Scorp is almost as glaringly inconsistent as painting it gold and giving it a laser bonus. If we head down this path, then are we in danger of losing an individual feature of the Caldari ships?

Most of the new ships look much better although I agree with someone who said the colors are oversaturated.
The one ship that doesn't look right is the Scorpion. Adding some extra details on the skin to make it look bigger and more impressive is good but I feel this is too clutered and too dark. The boxy grey "all we care about is function and efficiency" look is what says Caldari to me. The new Scorpion doesn't have that.

Primary reason EVE ships are one of a kind is because they do NOT fit what people expect them to be. That gives originality. The uglier and more contrary to peoples expectations the better.

the old scorp, and just about every other caldari ship look disgusting. love the new scorp. the design embodies exactly what caldari ships should look like, based on the story.

I agree with you Xerxes X in that the new Scorpion design looks a bit off. The original Scorpion was just basically like a metal plate with lights and aerials sticking out the front/back. But the new models have like extra panels on them giving that 'cluttered' look as you said.
But all the ship redesigns are like that. Take a look at the new megathron for example. In the original model the front section of the ship (the big bulge where the headlights are) is all smooth and rounded, but the redesign has lines all over it, giving it that panelled look. I believe bulkheads is the word i'm thinking of.

Scorpion is decent. It's a lot more detailed than the current version, but I wouldn't say it's nicer.
I would prefer that it looked a bit like the Ferox. More sharp angles, gun metal colors and those sweet subtle hexagon patterns across its surface. That being said, if you change the Ferox to look like the new Scorpion, then dear god... ____________________________ Signature file size to large, please keep it under 24000 bytes - Petwraith How's this? -imo
