I don't have any you see. I'm not rich enough to risk losing them, and I tend to get into a lot of fights.
Would insuring implants be a terrible idea? (Let's just pretend that it could be possible for the sake of argument).

Not true at all. I use jump clones regularly and have not lost implants yet. Only way I know of to lose implants is to jump out of a station you already have an implanted jump clone at.
If anyone wants jump clones, please contact me. My service is 15 mil ISK and you can read the details in my sig. You will be able to install up to 5 clones and can switch to and from your implanted clone easily. Get your own set of jump clones for 15 million ISK! |

Just for the record, this isn't actually a whine thread. I've probably lost far more isk in ships than implants over the last couple of years, so it's not that much of a big deal.
I was kinda interested to see if people thought that insurable implants would ruin the market/devalue them and so on.

You don't HAVE to buy +5's all the time. If you insist upon placing skillpoint accumulation near the top of your Eve priorities then you should have to pay a lot, otherwise everyone would be running around with 50m skillpoints. +1'2, +2's, +3's and even now +4's are cheap enough to make them disposable. That is cheap enough. Plus you can just use jumpclones.
What I would like to see is an implant that adjusts your base attribute levels - ie one that takes say 5 points off charisma for a 4 point willpower gain for the duration of fitting, or a booster that does the same for a timelimited period.

Why is T2 expensive? Why are implants expensive? Opportunity cost, you want to spend isk to give yourself an advantage, it's reasonable. Making implants dirt cheap will only make them annother requirement and not something unique.

Implants have to be one of the worst things in the game. Gee, lets reward people for never doing anything exciting. Jumpclones can only be used once every 24 hours, meaning after you jump out of your implant clone you have to wait a day to get back in, and then you have to wait another day if you once again need to do something interesting.
For the love of all that is moronic there needs to be equivalent effects for use where getting podded (lag, etc) is a real danger. Unless they are truely meant as a grand-prize for being boring. |

I find it ironic that more learning skills are one obvious possible substitute for implants. Also look forward to seeing how they're going to do boosters and DNA mutators. ---

Edited by: Jim McGregor on 11/05/2006 06:51:57 I wonder how the fear of losing implants affect peoples decisions to go out and explore 0.0. Somebody made this point before too.
So people stay in empire until they can afford to lose ship + implants. Or they stay in empire for their entire gaming life. I know there are jump clones, but it takes time to get standings to 8.0 too. And with one jump every 24 hours, its a bit awkward.
Maybe insurance isnt such a bad idea? I first thought it would be very carebear, but it might increase the number of people participating in pvp...

I've got implants, and for me... the real barrier is the stupid 24 hour jumpclone delay. If this were significantly shortened, it would be awesome. I've got my implants in my empire clone, and I've got a jumpclone @ an outpost in 0.0.
Say I want to do some ratting/PvP in 0.0 ... I've got to clonejump out there and then I've lost the benefits of the implants for at least 24 hours. If you're someone who works and goes to school like me, you probably want to play for a few hours each day (i.e. 2-3). So, wtf do I do? I can't jump back and forth between clones that often.
TBH, I'm not sure I understand the need for the 24 hour delay. If the delay were shortened to something more reasonable like 4 hours, that would be awesome.

Edited by: Toros Revoke on 11/05/2006 07:11:16 Myself, I'm quite happy to float about in .0 with implants, unless I know there's going to be a scrap, in which case I don a disposable meat suit which I won't mind exploding (much). I dunno about anyone else but when started the game, I had no clue what I was doing, thusly Toros is a charismatic bastard with the memory of a brick and about as perceptive. cheaper implants would be a boon, I really hate having my training slowed for that 24 hours

you can't insure implants because they are an entirely a demand driven cost (even more so than t2). By adding insurance, you add an artificial floor for the price, taking away the ability of the players to decide the price. Also, if they insurance didn't almost totally cover the implants you'd whine it was too low, wouldn't you?

I personally run with +1s and +2s if I know I'm going to be doing a lot of pvping as they are cheap to lose (compared to +3).
I tend to break out in a rash when I have no implants plugged in tho

Infact, I've been dodging blobs just last night in Syndicate. I use them, and I risk it, the extra training time is fun. If theres a sticky fight, though, I wont go in against very poor odds.

So true. Both implants and learning skills ultimately result in making the game a hell of a lot more boring than it needs to be.

QFT
Base price on a +4 perception implant is 400k, so adding implant insurance will be pointless, like insuring tech 2 ships.

what do implants have to do with skillpoints? especially for slots 6+.
oh and consider this - if you install two very cheap implants - 5% to specific turret type damage and +3% to all turrets damage, that'd be about 8% more damage you deal... that's pretty decent for such easy to replace stuff...

Implants are fine -- but just treat them like ships. If you can afford to lose +2's use +2's. If you can afford to use +4's use +4's. Profit.

Offers that require you to buy a bunch of NPC trade goods in exchange for them, make them an ISK sink. Not much of one, because most people wait till they get the implant-for-free offers ... but they are an ISK sink. ________________________________________________

Edited by: Plutoinum on 13/05/2006 09:01:29 If something like 10 percent advantage in skill training is more important to you than having some action and fun, then something is wrong with your priorities anyway
I'm lacking implants since I got podded last time, because I don't have the money and the time for a shopping tour. I've stopped my training for dreads anyway to train for interdictors and minmatar hacs, a few days in my training plan of 3 months or so make no big difference.
I do what I want without thinking much about my implants. When I have the money and time to go shopping, I plug in some new. Until then I play without. No big difference, because skill training is not the most important part of the game, I mean it's not the reason why I play.

No. I like Eve raw.
Theres already 5000 games on the market where the game becomes your mommy and make sure you never lose anything.
I love the harshness, this is not everquest in space.
Without the harsh penalties Eve would be so slow and boring, I would prolly give up MMORPG's altogether because they are all garbage except this one.
I tried the Auto Assault 14 day trial. When your car dies you press a button and 10 seconds later you show up at a repair place brand new. And thats PVE.
If thats the future of gaming, you can count me out. They keep pandering to the lowest common denominator to get more subscriptions, you cant find 1 decent game, they are all made for morons.
