Im not too worried about the DT or if people get a day for free but I wonder if the brains behind CCP's upgrade thought about E3 when they did this major DT. We are talking about the major gaming press being at E3 at the moment and while the devs and ccp management are happy to say yes we are getting drunk weee we are so clever to be drunk again ( dont worry when I used to write for gaming mags i used to do this all the time with MS's Steve Magill and others). But look back at this devs whilst you were all enjoying yourselves in CA at E3 and trying to promote the game your team in London had the game down for such a long time that those journos and gamers who your trying to impress were either trying to log in to create an account or try the game for real, not just look at what your doing at the stand. So was this CCP's finest moment ? I dont think so they could have delayed this upgrade a week to a time preiod where the major devs could have been in London not on a Jolly in the US and they certainly are not looking good to the games press. My contacts in the gaming press that I still have e-mailed me asking if this was normal or would it be fixed. They were not impressed that the company would decide on this time to do a major upgrade. CCP next time dont do a major upgrade when your showing your wares to the world. Anyway lets hope all is good and we can enjoy the game. As I say Im not worried about the time its taken I have a nice tan now so Im cool just that I think CCP would have done better to show off the game and promote it to the world in a better way.

I think they used Sisi as the demo server for E-3, which honestly is not that unsusual since you dont realy want the press to get ganked for flying cluelessly into bobspace.

yea but what smeggy says has merit. it would be a shame if alot of people get a bad impression of eve b/c of the timing of the whole thing.

Now that you put it that way, you are right, it was a bad idea to schedule upgrade during E3.
Can't do anything about it now, just remember for future.

You know, it's not like they couldn't have a laptop at e3 running the server's software for a private E3 server to show off in-game features.
Hell, sisi runs on some old desktop in the CCP building in iceland doesn't it?

there are what? 2 other servers they can use apart from Tranquil?
you have the test server (singularity) and one of the other beta servers...so no probs there.
Trainquility = Ganked Press people.

Edited by: Eternal Fury on 12/05/2006 04:56:29 Actually, if you were thinking of trying out a new MMO.. Wouldn't it be nice to know, that after doinga complete server upgrade just a few months ago, they were also upgradeing the database hardware as well to keep performance up for their customers?
I only started in January, and I LOVED knowing that the servers were about to be upgraded at the time..
most MMOs don't really tell their customers if they are upgradeing or anything. they just say there will be extended maintanance for a day....

Eh, not like it matters too much. Blizzard pays the media to stay away from CCP's booth anyway.
Probably right in that they present on a quickly setup private server or SiSi

considering from the press pics they showed the new client, I highly doubt it would be compatible with the current tranquility build. Furthermore the Tier 3 bses are not live on TQ, so that point would be moot.
Also imagine the chaos if they gave the press a titan to play around with on TQ.

Neither CCP nor EVE were even listed on gamespot.com for e3 until today and the only news about EVE and its presentation (not even one review) was just a summery of "its a MMO space game where you fly around in your ship and the galaxy is heavily centered on player's actions and the next expansion patch, Path to Kali, will begin in Q2 2006 (June 30) with the first release, and end in 2007 with the factional warfare implementation., ect. ect. *sigh* We're so ignored by the media RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE

Its not that they cant show it off at the stand its when the journo goes back to his hotel to try it out and oh wait a minute he cant along with the rest of the possible new players who might want to try the real live version of the game. As I say Im not worried about dt taking so long in the long run it will all be good, Im just worried that it might have stuffed up their timing to the world. Here is our game oh no it isnt. Thats all I was just asking the question of the timing of such a major upgrade.

CCP apparently were hoping to show off the playerdriven market.
And something tells me Oveur will need a hug after all this. Sure wouldn't want to be him atm.

What's evern more unimpressive is, they're not even giving us a clue now as to when the servers will be up. That, in itself is bad press.

Thats normal. You can almost always expect delays in upgrades. Then again, good things never did come w/out a price (enter the whiner complaining that he's paying for no service). I think most of us can agree that the game we enjoy is, while not prefered, worth the setbacks in server/patch upgrades.

I don't mind delays. I don't mind shutting down to do upgrades. I don't mind weekly maintenance and I don't mind patches either. All those things lead to a better end product. I suppose more than anything I do mind getting the mushroom treatment (kept in the dark and fed ****). The deadline has come and gone and still no word of a new deadline. Bad PR. Very bad.

I agree. Its not like they are doing this to **** everybody off intentionelly.
If people could change skills from the web site, it wouldnt be nearly as annoying either.

I wonder if they setup a booth there where people can log on their test-server whats there to create character and try out EVE. *THAT* would have been best demo ever!

What makes you guys think CCP is any different then most other game companys?
One group talking ot another group ?? HAHA yea right
Here is a good example.. Corp had a major issue with our POS.. Talked to a GM . He said he would look into it.
2 days later.. Another GM took the case (It was obveus that the new GM knew nothing about what was discussed with the first gm) Then 3-4 days later we get another GM.. SAME story. He didn't know jack about the problem and needed to have everything explained fresh.
My point is this. What makes you think one group of people at CCP knows the slightest about what another group is doing. I highly doubt the people in charge of the upgrade (when it was going to happen etc.) Had any clue that E3 was going on.
Just look at the evidence

Any gaming press person worth their salt knows how hardware upgrades in MMOs work. Press people who don't know about these things are press people who don't actually game, and they aren't worth listening to. Come to think of it, most of the gaming press isn't worth listening to. They play the games they review for 5 minutes and act like they know everything, or get paid to give a 10 stars rating and never play the game at all.

Agreed, though unfortunately theres nothing you can say that will silence all the RABBLE. Nearly every patch/upgrade (except the new hardware upgrade which was ahead of schedule) has been delayed and the forum whiners come hammering the forums. Then the server is back (sometimes with problems sometimes w/out) and people complain, then a weeks time and everyone's back and having fun. Nothing new here

I understand what you're saying but then again, I still wouldn't even know that EVE existed had I not seen it ranked as the top MMORPG on mmorpg.com last year when I was browsing for a new mmo to play and decided to check it out.

Oh quit with the fanboy stuff, it's nauseating.
Any reasonable person would realize that having the game unavailable during a big show is a bad idea. Sure it's good to have hardware upgrade, but they don't need to happen at same time as once a year world wide show.
Rather than trying to defend a mistake just admit that it was a mistake and it shouldn't happen again.

As a qualified IT technician, winner of the Miss Bulgaria 2003 contest, messiah of a small religion and a generally amazing guy, I know what I am talking about, and I can tell you CCP have done it all wrong. I could have done this deployment while eating cake, standing on my head and being fellated by a grizzly bear, and still finished it in half the time they provided, without all these delays.
