If it was possible to some how customize the captain's quarters, or purchase (or manufacture) trophies or other miniatures to put in there, I could get behind that. I'm thinking of the Mass Effect Captain's quarters for example. Purchasing certain items, while not really adding much to the game play, added a lot of flair.
Inviting others in to your quarters would of course be cool as well. I'm sure there's more RP oriented groups that would be interested in that. |

This ...maybe not exactly but some room for discussion here.
I mean 2 corps at war dock in the same station but cant engage inside? really?
Just imagine a new gameplay element here...
War target docks in an NPC station.
IF a corp member has higher standings with the stations corporation (or faction) than the corp they are at war with then, by use of a certain module (expensive and dependent on something ...Concord standings maybe?) they get a chance to use a 'hacking' game to eject a random selection of target pilots from the station (after which normal docking rules and timers apply).
Of course needs polishing to stop people docking and switching to noob ships or pods (quick warp off) but then again maybe the whole standings should be looked at for what we are allowed to do in stations. Imagine if while at war low standings with the station owner would not let you change ship, or leave ship until station has processed your papers (5 minutes? or enough time to get a hack in).
There may be something in this which would bring standings more to the fore AND help eradicate boring station games.

The easiest solution to stop docking games is to make every NPC station spit you out at like 25km but you have be with 500m to dock.
However if there where ever to do WIS, then yeah, something like this would be fun. |

Anyone here played Neverwinter? I've given it a go lately, and the major hangout spot for roleplay in that game is the Moonstone Mask, a brothel where the courtesans are typically wearing rather more than some of the player-character patrons. There's a lot of /dance-ing going on, and people leaving in pairs to go cyber in a private instance somewhere.
It's fun in its way, but it really doesn't strike me as very EVE. I mean, I'm all behind the idea of getting my toon sitting down in a bar drinking a beer and watching the Splinterz while winning a Scorpion in a poker game, but what EVE is about is meaningful action that contributes to an economy founded on cycles of destruction.
Just having a bar where people can strut around wearing an example of the pitifully small catalogue of NeX clothing, sink ISK into imaginary beer and emote at each other is fine from an RP perspective, but - and I say this as an enthusiastic and long-term RPer myself - it's not EVE.
WiS needs content. We need to be able to smuggle, to hack megacorporate servers and steal their data in Neuromancer-style digital heists. We need to be able to pull some Ocean's 11 slick crime on a Poteque cybernetics lab. Bars need to be the place where you meet Hancolm Reylo, captain of the Serene Falcon and his mate Zoebacca and sell him a crate full of less-than-legal goods to ship out to nullsec. Or maybe Captain RoboJudge overhears the conversation and arrives at the below-decks exchange of goods and money, delivering justice with his boot and a ridiculously overpowered gun.
I want to own a casino and sell black-market ship components to members of the VIP lounge. I want to trick my interceptor out with an illegal overcharged MWD that provides a bigger speed boost but overheats faster that I had to buy off a shady character in a bar in Rancer. I want him to have built it from stolen prototype blueprints and experimental technology that Lai Dai would pay good money to get back. I want to get a CONCORD bounty every time I blow up a capsuleer who's using one of those things, and I want to take contracts on behalf of the Caldari State to provide a customs patrol at major highsec gates.
I want to hack an FIO office, steal a folder full of experimental viruses from their mainframe and load them into my data analyzer like charges.
I want to work side-by-side with dust mercs, using my wealth and connections and neural implants to literally and figuratively open doors for them as they raid a rival corporation's station hangar. I want to explore Sleeper structures to recover advanced biomodifications that I can build into my own clone.
Some of these things are impractical, implausible or just simply never going to happen. But the point is that EVE in Stations could be huge, IF - and only if - it is more than just a vehicle for erotic emotes. Where others see a pointless bar with no gameplay, I see a station interior with windows, so you can now see if anyone is sat on the undock without needing a second account. Imagine an RP corp is recruiting, and you manage to convince them that you're into that sort of thing by spending long evenings at the bar with them. Eventually they allow you to join their corp, which is when you ransom their Orca. That one meeting place provides a lot of possibilities.
I want everything you said too, however, baby steps. Just the bar, a few corridors, and maybe some NPCs standing around would be a good start. I know EVE players would find a way to make that fun (probably at someone else's expense). |

You can already do that by going to the IGS, or joining the in-game roleplaying channels, and more efficiently to boot.
EVE in Stations needs to be more than just a graphical facelift to roleplaying - it needs to be EVE, and EVE isn't just a bunch of people in an empty room. Sure, an empty room full of people who can't leave would probably result in them telling a story or playing a game or something, but given the option they WOULD leave in search of somewhere more tools and toys.
You can't just produce content from thin air - emergent content still requires a mechanical foundation. What differentiates EVE from a chat channel is that you can get in a spaceship and fly. Just putting people in an empty space and waiting won't produce results - the sandbox still requires sand.
What you do is you give people the means to extract and transport a resource, and then watch as they figure out how best to control and exploit that resource, build an economy, figure out how it interacts with the rest of the universe, and watch a new edifice grow and form its own thriving ecology.
But an empty room is not content, no matter how pretty it may be. An in-character blog and a video: http://verinsjournal.blogspot.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tu1mbsgo738

Can't really agree witb you.
What you are saying happens already and does not need a room for people to hang out with.
I mean that your arguments aren't really any, because they don't add something that's not there already.
No one needs a bar for this and no one ever has, thus there would be no increase in possibilities.
I'm not against WiS... hey, I want a long Tshirt to wear without pants lol ... ... but I wanted to say this so you can rethink your arguments. |

A lot of the suggestions in this thread for WiS interaction are similar to metagaming interactions players have over Mumble/phone/SMS. These others means of communication will always be faster and more personal..
When someone is negotiating corp vs. corp terms I suspect a voice is preferred to an avatar's dead-eye stare in CQ.
I'm not putting WiS down.. I'd like to see more WiS gameplay and I've offered some suggestions before.. but I'm not sure I identify too well with the RP-type suggestions.

Two features I personally wanted to see, and feel would potentially get a lot of use.
Either do something with it or get rid of it completely. People weren't even mad about it. They were mad that there WAS NO game play content, and about the obscene prices in the cash store. People thought WIS was a cool idea, and still do. You just gotta actually do something with it.
Edit: the other obvious gameplay option is to make Legion an extension of EVE, and allow me to so shoot people in the face from my CQ with my eve character? not sure that really is an advantage over a standalone game. |

People keep talking about a poker room and I think its a great idea. Have the door open into a poker/bing room and bar with a TV and a view.
TBH I think the FiS purists might be underestimating how that might affect the game. It would create a new toy in the sandbox that could be used to interact with HS other than the market and hitting the residents with a shovel. We would also benefit from having another way to interact with our Dust/Legion and Valkyrie counterparts.
This isn't an important issue because WiS is going to be amazing. This is an important issue because at fanfest we learned only 10% of the playerbase gets to "dynamic content" and we need a way to really engage with the "leveling my Raven" crowd socially. Getting that 10% to even 11 or 12% would be a big win.

Sadly, I think it is time to accept that WIS is dead Jim! I am sure the reason the WoD died and WIS never came is that the engine can't supported multiple characters in any practical fashion. Until I see an even partial demo of multiple characters interacting in a common place I'm going to stick with it is impossible with the current engine.
Unless CCP thinks of something so compelling to make it worth recoding WIS in another engine it is dead as a parrot nailed to its perch.
It isn't really "game play" that stopped WiS, it was betting on unproven technology. |

It's avatar gameplay, emphasis on gameplay.
I'd like more options than just that (I also loved the exploration-of-ruins scenario they gamed out), but that will do nicely. I don't think the technology is where CCP wants it to be yet, and so I'd be surprised if anything significant happens before we start ganking Badgers as they try to build stargates.
Ships are inert. Gameplay involving ships can stick to the cycle of creation and destruction. If you have avatars, you have the potential for much more nuanced interaction and much more visceral gameplay. It would be a shame to squander that.
(As for the paucity of clothes on the NeX store, the art department is already working on that, per their presentation at FanFest.)

You see threads about it every day because people still care about it.
Something like this SHOULDN'T be in features and ideas as we're not suggesting an Idea, CQ already exists. We're having a general discussion about WiS, FiS, Avatar based gameplay.
WiS vs FiS: We're all refering the exact same thing. WiS is the most widely recognized acronym and offers the easiest method for communication on the topic and best search result hits. |

When people care about things, they talk about them. It's far more likely that you'll manage to will yourself to simply ignore them than it is for you to make them go away by attacking them.

DUST avatars are functionally ships: metal and expressionless, and each instance of a type is indistinguishable from any other instance. There isn't even wear on the uniforms. So that's not what anyone hoping for avatar gameplay is looking for, at least not yet. An avatar is not generic.
There is the tagline for the Incarna expansion itself, that there are some things you don't want CONCORD to know about. It's a terrific premise that they did absolutely nothing with, beyond that trailer. If they did something now, with "the empires [...] losing their grip" and the pirate factions rising? It would be perfectly in theme with the game's overall direction.
Looking forward, at FanFest they showed a project they're working on to have not only single sign-on, but to have one character able to jump between different clone types, so that Dersen here could jump from his Ishtar to a Legion clone to a Valkyrie clone and back to the capsuleer clone. The character creator would be moved out of the EVE client, so that you would create a new EVE Universe character and then drop them into whatever game you wanted, whenever you wanted. Combine that with the last trailer, and suddenly you have some real potential--if they realize it. It's a goal, not a feature they've committed to shipping yet.
Marsha Mallow wrote:If Legion is available to PC users, I really hope we don't see people porting over there and ranting about the lack of push up bras, slutty body armour and poker dens.
A few points here:
1) Right now the single largest problem new players face is an inability to break into the social circles that keep people in EVE. Accessible, purely social gameplay is a way to meet people without having to provide a full API key, submit an application, wait for someone to vet you, and then finally invite you onto their TS server. It can break the "world of walled cities" that EVE has become, at least somewhat.
2) There is downtime in EVE. Everyone has, at some point, sat around in a station or in a bunch of ships and talked, or held a corp meeting on a server with nobody logged in at all except for that one alt AFK autopiloting a freighter somewhere. Avatar gameplay that makes use of the potential of avatars can bring that all in game. Effectively, it can bring a lot more of the metagame in game.
3) Clothes are (among many) options for personal expression. Not only is this important for player identification, it can influence gameplay (see: Sabriz Adoudel picking a plain avatar so as to not attract attention or arouse suspicion). Capsuleers are unfathomably wealthy, immortal demigods. We can pilot engines of destruction the size of Manhattan Island, but there is very little variance between us, all things considered. That doesn't make any sense.
4) Capsuleers, again, are unfathomably wealthy, immortal demigods. If you want to project that image, are you honestly going to wear a t-shirt? Think of the way that the incredibly powerful have dressed throughout history.
5) I, for one, would welcome more of an open sandbox, and less shackling to the cycle of creation and destruction. That cycle must continue, and it must also extend into any avatar gameplay generally, but Dersen doesn't exist to serve the economy. He participates in it. It's looking pretty deliberate and sustained. Best bet, just talk over their heads and report them without announcing.
Dersen made some good points, as did Stitcher earlier, and it's those who are being drowned out.
Having said that. This remark really is a bit contentious, and apologies because it does breach sexual/gender sterotyping and if it's scrubbed so be it. I notice some Eve female players are not all that fussed about public 'peacocking', but certain guys are. Some of which ties into female objectification etc. There are MMOs out there with extreme levels of nudity and hypersexuality, and this is already a niche game for women. If they arrive in numbers, what's going to happen in an environment like this?
If you try import elements of that to Eve to satisfy the majority male playerbase, consider. Would it attract more female players, or offend the existing ones?
If we're talking about avatar based gameplay, I see no need to wear a wonderbra to FPS and I'm not sure why it needs to be vamped up for the, uhr WiSers. TO THE RIPARDMOBILE! |

Although I agree Anonymous Forumposter's methods aren't helping anything.
If he's not a troll then I believe his attitude is probably born from genuine frustration.
Anyway, I'm looking for a forum thread to discuss the broader aspects of avatars in EVE, for example not just WiS (and it's fate) but the character creator, captain's quarters, avatar accessories, the New Eden Store, the Fanfest art panel, Legion and other conceptual ideas for generic avatar gameplay in EVE. A single thread where all these broader avatar-topic can be discussed without fear of posting off-topic or otherwise breaking forum rules by doing so.
I was told in a support ticket to come to this thread and break forum rules by posting off topic.

If pointing out the rules you're breaking is diverting attention away from the things you're saying, then what you're saying isn't very compelling or is presented very poorly. Poor presentation and hostile posting tends to cause people to not pay you much consideration. If you feel your points are valid and worth being said, then do them justice by posting them more effectively. |

If you'd like to know why I enjoy avatar gameplay, creating characters/portraits and even writing and roleplaying then you just need to ask and I'd enjoy spending time chatting about it and my motivations. If you'd prefer to make your own wild assumptions or just attack me then it's not real constructive in a thread like this. You can just inbox me instead, although I know you won't have your little audience there, I doubt they'd be interested in my life story and gaming habits.

I'm not doing it for the crowd, I'm directing these remarks at you, and I suspect a private chat won't help. I don't mean to hurt your feelings, but you do smack yourself when you feel like it, so learn to take it.
It's demeaning to the other female players when one of the most vocal and visible forum posters who identifies as a woman does nothing but talk about wanting to RP space barbie-vixen. I don't need to know if you enjoy anal sex, but thanks for posting your preference earlier. There's a difference between chatting at corp level and on the forum, learn it.
You are welcome to your position, but when other people try to counter argue you reject their concerns and carry on tirading, and you're amongst these other WiS supporters who are starting to get a bit annoying. I wouldn't have written all that if I didn't think you would take it on board, so don't take it to heart. Your blog has no content other than avatar images and some rp bios, unless I'm missing something, which demonstrates my point.

That would better than Walking in Stations.
As I have said in past post CCP will not bring back WIS as all and that was decided long ago by the EvE Community not to bring WIS back.
EvE is a spaceship game and I know that CCP will never bring WIS ever back into the game.
OP you can keep putting these threads up but CCP will not lock stock and barrell bring WIS into the game at all and that was decided by the EvE Community as well.
By the way CCP or ISD please lock this thread. Forum RulesForum Rules wrote:2. Be respectful toward others at all times.

A rant is a post that is often filled with angry and counterproductive comments. 4. Personal attacks are prohibited.
Commonly known as flaming, personal attacks are posts that are designed to personally berate or insult another forum user. Posts of this nature are not beneficial to the community spirit that CCP promote and as such they will not be tolerated.

Spamming also includes the posting of ASCII art within a forum post.

But don't worry, you're not hurting my feelings. I want to discuss avatar-elements in a broad sense, this is not the thread for that IMHO, but I am a bit pissy with CCP right now so just wanted to make that one cheeky post and move along, until you engaged me about me. That's also a topic I enjoy.

I don't think I identify as a woman, although people very often assume I am.
I do, however, love to goof off around forums. Many of my posts that come via my forum persona have an RP "flavor", while not actually being RP in the literal sense, because it's the silly way I enjoy posting. I don't believe I ever hurt anyone doing so and often actually inspire a few chuckles instead, which is the whole point. Yes, I have a dirty sense of humor at times, if you think my salacious jokes or one-liners are a bit much then sure, valid opinion to have. But I'd post the same stuff regardless what character I use; male, female, xenomorph. My naughty sense of humor has nothing to do with my interest in creative writing, character portraits and avatar gameplay.
Goofing off around the forums like I do is very different to the actual roleplay I enjoy in proper areas, and is not a true representation of my character, her views or her lifestyle. She actually has very little interest in anything sexual.

o7 (ignore that creature above) I don't think I post like that at all. I do my best to counter or respond to points, and I like to think (when I'm posting in a 'serious' mood) that I do so quite politely and literately.
You are missing something though! There's blog entries in the Wormhole Diaries section (the index page is linked in my sig too)
Although I've been slow on updating it recently, along with the bios which are somewhat outta date. Hard to find time between flying in space, shitpoasting in forums and trying to hold down two jobs and a young family.

You enjoy flying your spaceship. You have a family with kid(s). You have two jobs.
You are being forced to post on the forums.
As that's certainly not the case, I'd say you're posting during work, making your words partly invalid.

I thought it looked odd, probably missed it. Will go have a read. Thanks for the reply. I still think supertramp online won't gel well with Eve and will create enormous problems though :P
