I think the reason Guild Wars is popular is because there are a lot of kids and other people who won't (or can't) pay to play the subscription games. Guild Wars is a good MMORPG if you don't want to pay I suppose, but definately lacking everything you get with a p2p mmo such as EVE. Especially the community. You can estimate the average age of the Guild Wars community when the towns and all instances of the towns have a crowd of characters w/ nothing equiped doing their /dance emote in the center square all shouting "weee I'm naked! lololo". -_-;
*edit* for some reason my 200 word rant didnt make it, guess im not meant to post here, anyways, the point i made was that dont judge GW after only a few weeks of playing, would 1 week of Eve make it justice? I was playing it the second day it was out... there were people who had reached level 20 even then.

I did give it a month Was pretty fun for 3 weeks, 4th week nearing the end, somewhere in the 5th week was the "I win the game". Now what? Start over as a different job? No thanks.

EVE is the best game for me. That's all that matter. For me.
If then CCP are excited that their baby is in a competition about being the best game in this or that category and wish to share it - fine. Then that it's a matter of most people liking this or that game, well that's what the vote is all about in the first place. To get any sort of true poll of which game is best you need to question a lot of people, preferably a lot of people who've played more than just their pet game. On avarage, I think EVE has the most experienced population in that area considering that EVE is seldom the first MMO people try.

I played Guildwars for about 5 weeks over the Xmas period. Was fun for a bit, but I found the PVP dull and uninteresting. No sense of risk.
I got what was apparently the best axe in the game on my first trip into some mine thing or other. Then I did the fissure of woe and the other one for a while but these become dull and easy once you know what you are doing.
Its good fun while you are levelling up and completing the pve bit of the game. After that it quickly becomes dull. Couldn't be bothered to go through the whole rigamarole with another race of character.

Well i agree that the pve part is limited to say the least, dont really know how pve kept me busy for over 1000h. One of the major problems in gw is that its devided in pve and pvp, the pvp community despise the pve community and the pve community see the pvp'ers as elitists. So if all you do is playing the game pve side you wont really get a grip of how complex the pvp side is, i never really got a grip of the pvp and i played for several months. Anyways, Eve amd GW cant really be compared, GW is arena pvp, developed for tournaments and such. ----------------- This is my alt account (in training) that i use for posting, main is Tzin if some1 give a dam... |

No no EVE is the best MMO out there, nothing come close. My point is that MMOPRG.com's rating system is meant to be based on real reviews, not tonnes of 10/10s becuase EVE has fallen off the top spot.

Originally by: Kel Shek its fine for people to enjoy GW for what it is.

but, unfortunately due to things like that and the way some gaming magazines treat the term "MMO" its really getting to lose any meaning it ever had.
Apparently, a game that has any or all of the following:
-items -dialogue -stats -visible damage numbers
is an RPG. "RPG" is the current king of mis-used genre designations, but it seems that "MMO" is starting to catch up.
Edit: Guild Wars is neither an RPG or an MMO. EVE Online is not an RPG. Just about anything that calls itself an RPG has no actual role-playing unless people go above and beyond the call of duty to force themselves to roleplay :(. And don't even get me started on the storybook games that the Japanese are fooling themselves into thinking are roleplaying. _________________________________________________________

Computer role playing games arn't defined like their tabletop cousins: Basically to be a CRPG all you must have is an advanced character progression system.

Imho GW deserves the top spot, because Eve PvP has too much freaking downtime. But I like both games.

Despite what they advertise it at, GW is NOT a PvE game. It is not about equipment or level, which is why you can create a max level max equipment character right after buying the game. It is about player skill and tactics, the PvE is just a long, optional tutorial to learn how your 150 skills work.

i kinda prefer eve as an underdog game. if it gets too popular with wow or other instant grat players, the playerbase will probably pressure ccp into leveling gameplay for everyone, no matter what skill lvl.
game balance....yeah, i understand but sometimes a game is popular because its cutting edge and exciting. overall game balance usually results in dumbing down a system in order to attract players who dont wish or dont have the time to learn the intricate workings of a game like eve, or for people who complain too much.
so let the ratings slip, i would rather have a fun game with 120k subscriptions than a game that used to be challenging with 500k subs......remember SWG?

Guild Wars is supposed to be treated as a tournament-style competition game with a co-op campaign, not an MMO, which is why a lot of people get confused and claim it sucks compared to EVE. Think of a cross between Diablo and Unreal Tournament, rather than World of Warcraft. You have a character with skills and equipment that you control in third person as with Diablo, and you take into organized battles in arenas ala Unreal Tournament.
Comparing a game like EVE to Guild Wars is completely unfair, because Guild Wars isn't supposed to have risky PVP with lasting effects on the world. If you want to blast a game for having super-lame PVP, blame World of Warcraft which can actually be compared to EVE. _________________________________________________________

I Betaed Guildwars, and it seemed very cool, then I saw that it's instanced, and you need to be grouped constatnly, or have godly items to get anywhere.
Oh, and the drop system is ******* horrible. I quit the day my low lv lchar solo killed some boss while the rest of my party was ******* around, and it dropped some killer sword, which only I could use, and it went to some monk/necro or something, who sold it to a friend.
/me glances over at his preorder box for GW.
I wonder if I could still get my 'super shield'.

He's right
It's intended to be a guage of which MMO is best, not which MMO got the most subscribers to go and give it 10/10 reviews.
I disagree 100%. Eve currrently has a user rating of 8.3 and a mmorpg review rating of 8.3. Eve is good.
EVE is a great game and gets a great score because it is.
For everyone who bad mouths EvE on mmorpg there is probably a rating of "1". It all balances out. This notion that the score is artificially pumped up is ridiculous in my opinion.
I suspect the reason there is so many people claiming "foul" with the rank is because so many people haven't played EvE (in relation to other mmorpgs) and they can't explain why a game they didn't play is beating their current game of choice.
I have seen the Arctic Circle... And it is round. |
