This is what happens when the nerf bat and the server gerbil are in the same room at the same time.

This is to be expected when changing from software that you have experience working around the glitches on, to basing everything on relatively new and untested stuff with unknown problems that you can't test without going live. At least the previous DB software was semi-predictable, if unfixable due to being MS's stuff. |

Edited by: Shodai on 17/05/2006 18:00:03 Downtime/problems after a huge hardware upgrade during E3? No way?!
CCP has the best customer relations i've ever seen from an MMO. I don't really care about downtime when it doesn't take them a week(or two) to actually admit they had a problem and are working on it.
Bravo.

Well said. I've played MMO's in the past where the devs/GMs refuse to even admit there's a problem, and insist for hours that the users' ISP/computer/firewall is at fault. Problems happen, but at least CCP admit something's wrong and try to fix it instead of pointing fingers at the players.
Eve Online has accounted for more downtimes in my MMO life than every other MMO I play and have played put together.

This is a side effect of the upgrade to SQL Server 2005, either an issue in SQL Server 2005 or something in our code not working well with the new SQL server.
Having just done two SQL 2005 installs (one for a bespoke trade system and the other for an SAP deployment), I'm interested.... what mode are you running SQL in - 2005 native or 2000 Backwards Compatibility?

Scaring, especially if it's the first option. You guys really took a serious bet in putting such a new system software into production this fast, but I guess you really had no choices. Good luck

Honestly, I think you're a bit spoiled. They havent posted in 5 days, and you complain? Try other MMOGs, you'll be lucky if you see a dev post once per month or so.

Ah, another fanboy... Sometimes I think CCP HIRES them. No wonder they can't afford to pay for a server that isn't unusable.

You have to put it in context though.
When I used to play UO back in the day, the servers routinely had 24h downtime each month or so, in order for the developers to install software patches. However, as there were 10+ servers at the time, players simply moved to a different server for an hour, and noone complained.
WoW is a more recent example. Not only could I not login for 2 days of my 10 day trial. But there was only a half-arsed attempt at an apology at the end of the 2 days (reimburse half the client base, 1 day). Whilst this wasn't a problem with the majority of servers, some realms were completely unaccessible as a major node was down. Combine this with WoW making worldwide news headlines due to lag and instability.
Finally, Eve. Yeah, I'll put my hand up and admit that unexpected downtime is annoying; Eve has been down for one reason or another for about 3 of the 6 times I've tried to play in the last two weeks. But put it in the context that Eve is a single sharded cluster, of a size that could worry a good few machines on the Top500 supercomputer list, and you start to understand. Even getting two machines to successfully cluster is difficult.
Equally, put it into another context. Eve's monthly cost is comparable to other MMOs, some would say a little above. But at last count, they only had 120k subscribers (compare that to the 5m+ of WoW for example), that's a lot less money coming in. When you consider the free bi-yearly content updates, which other MMO's might charge ú20 for, it becomes all the more obvious that CCP are not made of money.
But CCP is a company that can post the exact cause of a problem within 10 minutes, can put it's hand up and admit it*****ed up.
Call me a fanboi or whatever, but at the end of the day, as a software/hardware developer I have nothing but respect for the size of the beast CCP has created. If you think that it is a company with 0 experience, that is doing things that are more impressive and advanced than companies five times it's size/age.
To quote myself fron a while ago: If you think you can do a better job; get a copy of Visual Studio, find a datacenter to host your box, and STFU.

Ok, we haven't found the cause for the deadlock yet, however, a new feature in SQL server 2005 might make the lock that caused this issue to be unnecessary and if that change passes testing, it will be deployed with the next patch or as a hotfix. ------ Valar Database admin - Server operations team CCP Games How to write a good bugreport |

You're not using Visual Studio 2005 that came free with it are you?
Anyway, I like the unexpected reboots. It refreshed the market and pushes all my NPC buy/sell orders through faster.

Man I love my timing. I just finished moving my computer to a new, gorgeous case, hoping and praying I didn't plug something in at the wrong spot, or forget entirely to plug something in. I get into windows, go to play Eve, see theres 2 minutes left in the startup. I spent 2 minutes cleaning up my mess and then logged on
Go CCP, greatest timing ever EVEBay

Trust me, a lot of people dont like this one. I lost 81 mil worth of stuff, other people lost loads. It's backup restoring time or a looooot of petition fixing...
The lack of quality and service is really beginning to annoy me.

Just to translate for those who are interested but don't necessarily know Microsoft SQL - level 90 is SQL Server 2005 mode (since SQL 2005 is actually version 9.0). ______________________ 106 days and still a hijack virgin... Cherry popped! ~kieron Kieron... I have some bad news... |
