WTH is going in here?
I just suffered a major CTD, that not only shut me down, but when I was FINALLY able to get back on it:
1) Reset all my graphics settings 2) Wiped out all of my saved profiles in my overview 3) Wiped out all of my folders for my bookmarkd 4) Wiped out all of my saved channels that I normally enter automatically when loggin into the ga

That "free" Version is the only sane way to administer a SQL 2005 server because the admin tool just became a plugin for VS 2005... say goodbye to enterprise manager
Besides that, I think putting the server in 90 mode is daring, something i like .

I'm glad that there was a server problem, I was thinking I was going mad. I bought 5000 small anti-matter. Couldn't find them, think that I must have bought them in a different station, so buy them again. This time double checking that it was the right station. Still not there.
Hay, I'm down 10000 rounds. GMs, If you want to stick them in the nearest piwat that would be fine by me.

I don't know if this problem is related to the recent problem or my internet connection, but chat just hasn't been working for me.

Yeah, work here is generally migrating to VS2005 due to SQL2005 and IIS6.0 on Windows2003.
So prt of my job is migrating loads of legacy stuff over to .NET (I am one of 2 people in a 6-person web team who knows .NET, whilst about 3 other developers over on the information systems side know it)

Right im glad we had this Uber Cluster Hardware recently and Glad of the Uber Database Hardware, But its a shame that you have made the game stodgy to play, slow with added crashes just for fun and discoes!
Do you have trained IT tech guys at CCP or are you relying on some lone Nedrie to sort out the problems.
Sort this out guys before i lose a ship to lag and then have to wait 15 days for a reply from the petitions people.
Hardware is expensive! But dont bull**** us you rake it in from people like me who are addicts to eve.
DO your job better or get the old hamster on a tread mill back in to run the server.
If i ran my webshop like this i would have no customers ever.

Have you guys discussed the removal of redundant records from the databases? -

We are constantly deleting trashed items, old logs and other stuff thats not being used anymore. Without doing that we would make the itemID integer column explode and the database size would increase very fast. ------ Valar Database admin - Server operations team CCP Games How to write a good bugreport |

Just something I'm curious about. How high is the itemID value right now? Millions?

We have already reached the max value of the itemID, so before we started reusing itemIDs we had around 2.100.000.000 items in the table. At any given time we have at least tens of millions of free itemIDs and many of the daily downtimes are used to delete items from the junkyards to add free itemIDs. ------ Valar Database admin - Server operations team CCP Games How to write a good bugreport |

2.1 billion or so is the highest a 32-bit number can be.

Not that it matters to me but I thought I say something. I don't know if the issues with the database are still occuring but 70% of my killmails just went poof! It doesn't matter to me hehe but yeah thought I say something incase it was indeed related to the issue.

I dont know mutch about database stuff but do you need to do this manually or is there a script for this? why does the server need to be offline for this? Im sure EVE/TQ server is not the only one having such problems with database, how do other people manage such causes?

The servers being able to use 64 bit and being ported over to use 64 bit are too diff things.

doesn't sql-serv 2005 know the datatype BIGINT - and this is 64-bit ( 2^64 )

Edited by: Inspiration on 18/05/2006 05:49:56 Alternativly, you can start using negative itemIDs as well :), shame to use onl 31 of the 32 bit available. Depending on how itemIDs are freed / reassigned, the access times of the table might be degraded. Updating statistics with full scan will fix this ofcourse, but that is an expensive procedure and nearly empty pages might still result from that, using extra space and forcing CCP to do a reindex altogether (expensive as you know). I wouldn't be surprised if this table resides on the RAMSAN :).
Anyway, nice to see you Devs interact on forums, very much apreciated.

Not to mention having 64 bit in the database is of no real value when the client is still only 32 bit.
But on another note: It's rare that a company would actually post that they are having technical difficulties until after the event, but to actually have a member of the Dev team not only post what the problem is but to stick around for a general tech chat is something of a surprise.
Kudos to CCP.

Hey Gravecat... the reason I'm here is because my WoW server, what was meant to be 'low population' just happened to start sucking the big one for about three months straight. I cancelled my sub, moved to EVE and I have not yet had a single problem during my playtime. This prob, tho, lasted what... 20 mins? The WoW problems take down the ENTIRE forum site for a full day and cause the game to go through cycling restarts that take usually an hour to half a day to get the server back up and running.
I think this guy does need to go play WoW for a bit just so he can get a reality check.
Kudos to CCP for being so open about the problem.. I'm open to all my customers about my software's problems when they show up and I absolutely love it when other vendors are the same back to me!

Everything you describe there are settings stored by your client locally. Specifically, they are the files in the Eve/Cache/Settings folder. If the game crashes (and by this I mean properly crash rather than just lose connection and close itself), then these files can get corrupted, depending on what was happening at the time. When the client sees that the settings file it's trying to load is corrupted, it automatically resets to default values to allow you to get into the game.
It is a right pain if it happens, but keeping a "known good" backup of your settings folder, and just copying it back when this happens usually works. I just usually take the oppourtunity to review all my settings, reorganise my BM's (and strip unused ones out to a container) etc. ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |

No, the highest possible 32-bit integer is 2^32 (4294967296) actually since its stored as 32 bits in memory. If you want to be able to store negative numbers as well, the highest possible number is 2^31 (2147483648), which is what you said.

Congratulations to CCP Team, I'm a former WoW player, there, lag is the king, you send an item to someone who never receive it or you never receive payback, what else ? uh... a server crash but if you look at forums, all servers work well, and when crashed server go back online, you are happy to notice that, you lost money/items/XP, and rollback is equal to blizzard's response time (I can understand. Each maintenance day (wenesday in europe), servers experience troubles, and when a patch is apply, you'd better to log in the next day, if you want to play... For the moment, I get a trial account, but I will subscribe to eve.
PS : Sorry all for my english but this is not my native language, so I make big mistakes .

We can't change the itemID column to bigint because that would increase the size of the items table at least 3 times and all its indexes by at least two and we can't use negtive numbers because of how the inventory system is implemented. ------ Valar Database admin - Server operations team CCP Games How to write a good bugreport |

Which begs the question of how many itemIDs are currently sitting in the junkyards waiting to be freed up. Or, more importantly (though slightly less certain), how large the playerbase needs to get before all the itemIDs are assigned to active items, the junkyards are empty, and we truly run out of itemIDs.
I'm sure you have a contingency plan for if and when that happens though ------- There is no magic Wand of Fixing, and it is not powered by forum whines. |
