Amazing how a team who were embarassingly pumped out by a pub team in the qualifiers last year can be seeded in pot 2 for next year!
My opinion of the game last night is that the ref made it a game with the sending off. He had no choice after he blew the whistle, and he has to make these decisions quickly.
It wasn't the sending off that was the difference between the teams, it was the introduction of Larsson to the game. If he hadn't come on I believe Arsenal would have held on for the win and then we wouldn't be hearing all these complaints about the red card! |

Originally by: F4ze The decision to deny Barcelona the goal and a red card for Lehman was not as bad as it looked.
He already called foul before the goal was scored and thus he had no other choice than to give Lehman a red card. If he hadn't called it as fast (i.e. not before the goal), he would have accredited Barca the goal and a yellow card for Lehman.
And of course, Arsenal's goal came after a schwalbe from EbouT.
So all in all, I wouldn't say the ref was "wearing a barca shirt".
Good game.
Well normally Lehmann must have recieve the red card and the goal should have counted. When when not there you have to decide for advantage for barca?
I was watching the game on belgian tv and they phoned a specialist from some commity (can't remember which one) during half time. He claimed that the ref could have either accredited the goal and given Lehman yellow, or red for Lehman and denying barca the goal. Obviously the referee had no other choice than to give Lehman a red card, because he had already blown the whistle before the goal was scored.
He should have looked where the ball was going first before calling foul, but it was already too late.

Football grr
A bunch of pre-maddona's who get paid far too much for kicking a bit of inflated pig skin around a field for 90 minutes!
Yes you may say it takes skill, but so does my profession of nursing, some players make more in a week than i do in 2 years.
Thats sucks |

pfft takes more skill to control a ball with your feet than your hands
and @ the girly game comment yea if you look at some players *cough* Cristiano Ronaldo *cough* then yea you have a point, but then compare to Schwatzer who stopped a goal with his head (literaly) and played a few days later with a brace kindathing

I will say it again! O wait I can't hide it anymore I really don't care for american football (am a Yank FYI) I only watch the superbowl to see the comercials. I much rather watch Baseball or play soccer Nothing quite like doing a sliding kick into the other player and in one motion kick the ball from him as well as make him face plant into the dirt!

arsenal were unlucky, if lehman had fo kept his hands to himself arsenal would of had a fantastic chance to bring the game back from 1-0 down, but all in the past but the team arsenal put out has a very bright future and can only get better and better, barca`s team has probably reached its peak and tbh arsenal were a yard quicker than barca in every area of the pitch apart from eto`o who is without doubt barca`s best player ronaldinho is soo over rated, get in quick on him and actually challenge him and he goes to peices

Originally by: Tuxford The ref wasn't really good. He wasn't as horrible as the commentators make you believe (probably in every country) but he was pretty bad. He was pretty bad for both teams though so it kind of evens out.
That incident where Lehman wasn't really his best moment but tbh when he blew the whistle he had to throw Lehman off. This could actually have gone a lot worse for Arsenal, he could have kept the goal and thrown Lehman off. I would have preferred that he would have just given barca the goal and kept Lehman on.
We can of course speculate what would have happen if Lehman would have stayed in the game and barca kept the goal. Perhaps Arsenal would have won or perhaps Barca would have just scored more goals as Arsenal would have been forced to play more aggressive.
I don't think its fair either to say that Barca was much better because they had the ball more. Defensively Arsenal played very well and up to the equalizer by Eto'o Arsenal actually got much better chances that Barca did. Of course this was pretty much over for Arsenal once Henke came on.
As a Norwegian I feel I have to defend the action of the refferee. I agree whit much of your assestment though. Not much he could do ones he blew the wissle. Lehmann had to go. Had he not blown though, and let the ball go. There is two things that could have happend. Either 1# barca scored and he could give lehmann a yellow. Or 2# Barca didn't score but had second change. Now. What do you do? You can't go back now and give Lehmann the red. Becus you have given the chance foul the slip. He could have given the yellow but not the red becus he had given Barca the chance to score.
But he had no choice ones he blew though. Lehmann can only blame himself. Even though I whould preffere for the match sake that Lehmann had got the yellow and stayed on. It whould have been a much more intresting match then. But you can't really blame the refferee for that.
Beside, Arsenal had that horrid foul before their goal. A foul that should never have happend. But really. Both the liner and the ref couldn't see if it wasn't contact or not.
All in all I don't think the ref was that bad. But he could obviusly have done a better job. But that one insident kinda set the stage for the rest of the match. It's not like it could be like last years match anyway. Damn that was a metch for the ages.
My thoughts

As a neutral (Hatters fan) I felt the ref was for me a typical Euro ref...wanting to get in all the papers. Good refs dont get noticed and this guy was almost as big a talking point as Barca winning the cup.
A good ref would of taken a moment to see what developed and then act. For the good of the game it should of been 1-0 Barca and yellow card for lehmann.
At the start I thought it was arsenal who looked the more up for it, first 15 or so minutes they were pinging around. Soon as that red card was shown there was only going to be one winner and that was Barca. You could see when Barca got the goals Arsenal were tiring. Shame as I hoping for 5-5 draw going to penalties. All us neutrals got was a 10V11 only one way it was going to go final. Dont want to take the credit from Barca cause I love the way they play but i was so angry cause the ref was so desperate to get his little bit of fame on the game.
