Don't listen to andy gray, the guys a complete generic clichy tosser... he says things to keep him on the screen.
The ref saved arsenal in truth, had he given the goal, he would still have sent the keeper off... they wouldn't have recoverd from a goal down.
Ofc he was still useless though, it was a dive for the free kick, gave fouls and cards for nothing and somehow totaly missed about 20 blatents, half which deserved cards.
Never realy ruined 90 minutes of football though, it was 50/50 on f'ups
You can probaly narrow that number down to about 25/50 though on what wenger didn't see ______ Long ago one gorgeous night, we let the stars grow free. We let Zhuge do that once, he came back carrying a traffic cone, a forsale sign and three empty bottles of dutch lager. He also lost his Zimmer Frame... - Imaran

Don't diss andy please. The Ref was horrible, arsenal guy(forgot the name there just so many left backs) dived to get the free kick in the first place bar the briht start barca utterly dominated them, with arsenal sitting back and playing like some italian team defensive tactics, which imo was there downfall. they should have kept hitting barca when they scored and hit them when they were down, but no! And now my m8 who didn't listen listen too me is 10quid at the bookies down

Very Unhappy
Arsenal could've had 2 goals in the first 10 minutes, Valdez was solid for Barca and after Pires got subbed for Almunia Arsenal didn't really recover.
Ref was a little one-sided towards Barcelona imho but then i'm just a bit biased.
Still, here's hoping that with the bonus that Ronaldinho gets for the Champions League he can get those fecking horrible goofy teeth fixed Most players suck an orange segment at 1/2 time, apparently Rijkaard gives him a small log to chew

Edited by: Danton Marcellus on 18/05/2006 00:47:39 Had he not blown the whistle he would have given Barca the goal and the goalie a yellow card, he can't both give the goal and the red card.
As it were now he blew the whistle prematurely and had no other choice but to stand by his call and show the red card, disallowing the goal.
Wait a minute, is that an englishman complaining about someones dentals!?

Arsenal fans just can't handle a loss can they?
They were dominated almost from the start and it was not just due to being one man down for 70 minutes. So a few Barca players didn't get booked - would the result have been different if they had? Eboue was diving all over the place (which got you your goal, incidentally), Henry missed two golden chances with only the keeper to beat and - however you look at it - Dirty Jens grabbed Eto'o's ankle and was rightly sent off.
There was no way that Lehmann could have stayed on. It was either give the goal and send him off, or disallow it and send him off. The ref did Arsenal a favour (presumably in an attempt of not giving them two body blows in the same motion) and they still ***** about it.
Arsenal lost because they were not the better team on the night (I'd love some of whatever Henry was smoking in his post-match interview). Well done to them for getting to the final, accept that you were beaten by a better team. |

You lost, get over it. Tell your manager and captain to stop whining, you should be dignified in defeat, in public at least.
Despite that I would have been happier to see Arsenal win.

The ref wasn't really good. He wasn't as horrible as the commentators make you believe (probably in every country) but he was pretty bad. He was pretty bad for both teams though so it kind of evens out.
That incident where Lehman wasn't really his best moment but tbh when he blew the whistle he had to throw Lehman off. This could actually have gone a lot worse for Arsenal, he could have kept the goal and thrown Lehman off. I would have preferred that he would have just given barca the goal and kept Lehman on.
We can of course speculate what would have happen if Lehman would have stayed in the game and barca kept the goal. Perhaps Arsenal would have won or perhaps Barca would have just scored more goals as Arsenal would have been forced to play more aggressive.
I don't think its fair either to say that Barca was much better because they had the ball more. Defensively Arsenal played very well and up to the equalizer by Eto'o Arsenal actually got much better chances that Barca did. Of course this was pretty much over for Arsenal once Henke came on. _______________ |

They can give both, but thankfully he did not do that this time. A red card should only be shown when a player has unfairly denied a clear goal scoring opportunity. As Barcelona had another striker on standby to score the goal, the ref should have let that goal stand and booked Lehman. Poor refereeing throughout though; what did Henry get booked for?!!

I'm still amazed I managed to dodge the score long enough to get back home and watch the recording.
I too would have preferred that Lehman stay on and let the goal stand - would have made for a more interesting game. I will admit I am biased against Arsenal because of their disciplined defesive play. It makes for horrible viewing and its a shame they reached the final (final shoulda been Milan vs Barca but thats the draw for you).
Ronaldinho was a persona non grata for most of the game. Even though he came on as a sub, Henrik Larson has to be man of the match. ----

The decision to deny Barcelona the goal and a red card for Lehman was not as bad as it looked.
He already called foul before the goal was scored and thus he had no other choice than to give Lehman a red card. If he hadn't called it as fast (i.e. not before the goal), he would have accredited Barca the goal and a yellow card for Lehman.
And of course, Arsenal's goal came after a schwalbe from EbouT.
So all in all, I wouldn't say the ref was "wearing a barca shirt".
Good game.

Well normally Lehmann must have recieve the red card and the goal should have counted. When when not there you have to decide for advantage for barca?

I believe everyone in the stadium was furious with the ref. The commentator on dutch TV suggested they sent the wrong Norwegian home (after a linesman got sent back after posing in a Barcelona shirt). Of course he ruined the game. You could tell neither side was happy with the decision, it destroyed any chance Arsenal had of playing their normal game. Plus, and that ****ed me off even more, it ruined the chance of Bergkamp getting a proper farewell.
I was neutral last night, highly anticipating a dream ticket between 2 of the most attractive teams. But that dimwit blew it when he blew his whistle.

I'm disappointed by this thread. I thought it would be about someone who lost their arsenal of weapons cache in Syndicate in a hauler we might have ganked, but no, its about some stupid soccer game. Soccer threads should be banned like political and religious threads in my opinion. There, I said it.
