Ok...can some please explain to me the difference between the two and why falloff is lower than optimum for lasers

Optimum range is the range up to which you will do the most damage. Falloff is the distance after optimal range at with you can still hit but will do progressivly less damage. You maximum range is optimum + falloff.
Hope this helps. :) |

isn't it +/- falloff?
Opt=10000 Falloff=5000 You can hit 5000-15000, with best damage at 10000?? ---------------------------------------

Nope. Putting tracking and signature radius aside, you score best shots from 0 to 10k and your efficiency diminishes to ca. 0 at optimal + falloff. Although you can score some non-0 hits very occasionally ----------------------------------------------------------

I could seem that way, because you will start to hit a lot less depending on you tracking speed and the speed of the target.

I have noticed that if your get too close (esp. after the new patch) you miss a lot more too. i.e 600m
Is it just me?

That is because of the tracking speed. While giving exact figures is pretty difficult, a few estimates... At 0.1 rad/sec tracking speed, you can hit orbiting stuff at very close range (probably less than 1 km) At 0.01, try to stay at least 10km away from the enemy, if the weapon allows it more. Otherwise, try to stasis the enemy (i.e. large blasters at 3-5km + stasis) At 0.003 or less (lots of large weapons), I'd say 16-20km to score decent hits. At 3km the target can barely be moving at all for your guns to hit.

Opt is your best range, falloff if your max after opt, and tracking decides your minimal range

ok...so by increasing tracking speed...you lower your optimal...but then does that mean you have to get closer to make better hits more often...cuz that's dumb...and isn't that what trajectory analysis does...Is my head on straight?!?!?

Any chance the good folks at CCP will release some official explanation of all of this?

No, with a ultra-high tracking speed (say 2.2, highest in game 0.4 or so) you could hit at any range the gun allows, from 0m to a bit outside optimal+(falloff/2). Outside that range you'll miss a lot.

Yup and if you have slow tracking you might not be able to get good hits on stuff closer then 10km.

So, let's say I lost a bet and had to fight a Battleship armed with Tachyon Beam I's (tracking speed 0.00625 rad/sec from the TTI website, thank you TTI) in my Rifter frigate. He's having a smoke and suddenly I'm 500m from him. Does anyone have any statistics on the probability (hits per minute or second) that he will hit my frigate (most likely vaporizing it with one hit), travelling at 700m/s at 500m way? Does anyone know how accuracy works? Sure, everyone supports saving Einstein's brain, but when you put it in the body of a Great White Shark, suddenly you've "gone too far". |

He wont be hitting you.Not unless he gets a lucky hit in or two.
