no, they know full well most people will buy the next one in the hope of finding out what happens :). See: Soul Reaver/Legacy of Kain games. The only game that had a proper ending was the first one. All the rest have the fantastic "to be continued" at the point the dev team realised they had 2 weeks to ship.

I remember when Ion Storm's marketing strategy was to tell you that John Romero was "going to make you his *****." Hubris got itself a face and a name after that.

Half Life 2 and Doom 3 were Ok. F.E.A.R was a little better.
But overall worst game was Diablo 2 and i played it for months.

Master of Orion 3.
After a 4 year wait for a game that would require me to be hooked up to a life support system cos I would be playing it to much to eat or sleep I installed it and played it for about 24 furstrating hours.
I then scratched the CD with a compass while curseing each of the designers in turn and ritually burnt it.
I kid you not.

Bah.. stop it
HL2 was great, and it has alot of great mods and so on, but i was kind of disapointed when the game ended, and this guy in "blue" drops by and talks about time, and *pling* credits???! Doom 3, well, not the greatest game ever, but kept me entertaint for a few hours/days. Diablo 2, was a GREAT game, you have to agree with me on that!
Overhyped games: The Godfather, Battlefield 2, all of the sims games, Dark and light, black and white 2, and alot of other games i cant remember

I don't get what the issue is with the HL2 ending? Isn't the point that it didn't end? I mean Episode 1 comes out next week...
As for overhyped, BF2. Loved BF1942, it was fun in an arcade kind of way, BF2 took itself too seriously and didn't deliver.

Siren seriously, ask verone out, come to england and go on a proper date.
Its so painfully clear you have a thing for him lol seriously mate you can tell if not on corp chat it was definetly there on Teamspeak.

I think oblivion is on that list. I'm not too much into rpgs but it feels just like morrowind except for the graphics and the AI NPCs. I hope spore is NOT on that list.
And why do you say civ 4 is not moddable? Yah the game doesn't have the play oone more turn syndrom like the others, but it is far far more modable than any of the previous incarnations by xml, python, c++, 3d and 2d graphics. ----- David - Proud to be saving the universe since 1984 Wrangler - Saving the drunks by drinking their beer since 1992 Saving the breweries by sending their produce to Wrangler since 2005 - Imaran |

Half Life 2! Funny how you can make a game pretty, but you can't make it challenging. Though, the gravity gun at the end was very fun... it didn't make up for the lack of everything the rest of the game needed. --- --- --- ---

My vote goes to HL2, although I absolutely love the engine and play mods all the time, the game itself was just a vanilla FPS with nice graphics and a mediocre physics engine.

It's the lazy way out. Completing a story is much harder then pulling a cliffhanger.
Btw, Halo 1 and Halflife 1 did not have cliffhanger endings. HL1 had quite a nice big end boss with quite a long ending sequence. Halo 1 had that awesome jeep run followed by a meh ending...still was an ending tho. - _____

What she said ^^
In no way was obivion overhyped. It looks stunning, plays fantastic and is brimming with content.
Doom3 was a disspointment compared to it's hype, and was predictable, but still a well put together game.
Half-Life 2 was awesome, still is and has the best FPS physics engine ever created IMO.
I've seen a friend play WoW, and would rather remove my coconuts with a rusty bread knife than even bother playing it.

probably shoudl have made it a bit clearer I meant that i like all 4 games and the endings for all 4 yes a cliffhangar is easier to do but its still nothing wrong with it, the end of bsg has a cliffhangar yet its uber i dont see the difference between the 2 cliffhangars

To make my earlier points clear i have nothing against HL2 ending, or lack of. Cliffhanger endings do not in general bother me. Its the rest of the game content that bothers me.
HL2 = most overhyped game in existance.
on another game design point. If i have to trudge through another sewer in an FPS i think i may go postal! or airducts - i think they all watched way way too much die hard!

Uhh BSG is a tv show where you have to wait 1 season to find out what happens. With a video game you have to wait what, 3-4years? It's not a complete experience which are what movies/games should be. - _____

No!!! See reasons above why i dont like HL2, or rather more accurately, that i do not believe it deserves the hype showered upon it.
The clambering through sewers and air vents is just another example of what ive been saying. That these games have not evolved. That weve been doing the same **** for what seems like eons and no one seems to be saying Wait a f,n minute this is ****e i want something more.
Half Life Episode 1 will do it again and so will Crysis. This sort of stuff relies on impressive game engines, good reviews and the surety that no one will take a stance and say.
'WTF is this i did this exact same thing 50 times already!!. Still its a good game just doesnt innovate. Ill give it 80% or 7/10.'
I'll be very interested in reading the reviews on HL sode 1!

Here's my top 3 (Note - I haven't actually played any of them)
1 - Godfather 2 - Sims Online 3 - WoW
WoW was definitely overhyped - I saw an add at a movie theater, but it's also the most successful MMOG in history, so it's only partially overhyped. It probably shouldn't even be on the list since millions of people like it, but I have no real desire to play it.
TSO - OMG, the commercials. The constant press. Is it still around? Numbers have been dropping on it faster than rats from a sinking ship.
Godfather - Why, oh why????? Has anyone even played it? It was supposed to be THE game from EA last year. That's just sad. Even sadder is the fact that EA lost something like $750 MILLION in stock value because it was delayed. This just proves that accountants should have nothing to do with games, PERIOD.

Doom 3 - nice graphics predictable gameplay.
Halo - Pc owners waited ages for it and when it came it was a mess.
Tiberium sun - need i explain this.
Dungeon sieg 2 - a pale shadow of the origonal.
Battlecruiser 3000ad - bugged to hell.
Halph life 2 - Great Graphics Great levels and gameplay But a very disapointing end.

Got to agree with that. On top of the overhype that it got, there were game stopping bugs that took months to get patched. I took the game back to the shop for a refund after a month of waiting never bought one of their games again. Deus Ex was supposed to be good but I refused to buy it because it came from the same company.
Full Spectrum Warrior was my big let down. For something that was based on an army training simulator, it was so easy that I completed it in one night on the hardest setting. If that's the best training they can come up with, it's no wonder the army has to use huge numbers to make up for their poor training.

MOO3. Waited years for release and then the release was so filled with bugs they could have made a horror movie out of it.
Upon surfing to the website to search for fixes on the bugs I discovered that their help boiled down to- if it works great. if it doesn't try these dozen generic helps that all gaming companies tell their customers to try. if that fails to work...then tough sh** as we have your money.
For thoses people that complain, and I am not one of them, of the customer service of CCP I think you will find that none of them are people who have bought MOO3.

Don't forget that episode 1 isn't a complete game either, it's just an episode that will most likely end in a cliffhanger So yeah, an 'episode' that took 2 years to make.
The games i most fondly remember were full game experiences with decent amounts of gameplay time. I doubt i'll remember some episode I 4-5 hour game tbh but we'll see.
pretty sure it isn't a full game, correct me if im wrong :o ____________________________________________________ __
