Talking with friends lately and we all agreed that overhyped games are the pits. But what id like to know is your worst offenders for either overhyped games and or games undeserving of there critical acclaim.
Please give a wee reason why!
Im interested in finding out if there is a common consensus regarding this gaming phenomenon.
For my part: Half Life 2

Off the top of my head, Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter. I own it for the 360, and i've never such such a **** poor team AI before.
There's plenty of other culprits too, CnC: Tiberian Sun, Black And White, Oblivion, etc...

It's not bad, kinda fun even. But it is nowhere near the hype about it being the 'best game ever', etc.

Also halo sucks

doom 3 for my part, it's graphics "revolution" wasn't as impressive as people believed it was going to be and it only provided a medocre storyline with a few interesting moments. Good game, yes. Revolutionary, desfinatly no!

I sadly have to agree, It was like .. oh a dark bit, where oh' where are the monsters going to jump out from this time ?
Hmm, most overated game ... I'd have to say it was "The moment of silence" that was the sponsor for series one of the new battlestar Galactica on Sky in the Uk. The TV trailer made it look rigorous, involving and somewhat fun.
What I actually got was a sad point and click adventure game with somewhat less then the groundbreaking graphics advertised that wouldn't display at fullscreen on my 1600x1200 native resolution TFT.

By far and wide Orion which was supposed to be Ultima Online II, but became vaper wear literly like 2 months before it was scheduled to release. They actually already had Alpha testers playing the first version of the game. It was luckily overshadowed by Everquest, but it was by far the most overhyped product in existance and it doesn't even exist.
The next one on the list for sure was Master of Orion III. By far one of the greatest game designs in history with the worse execution I've ever seen. Alan Emrich is by far a designing genius along with Sid Meier and Steve Jackson, yet his game was completly F'ed up by one of the worst development teams in history. I'm yet to see anyone F up a game worse then MOOIII

Pffft, Oblivion was not overhyped. Me and Verone still play it. I'd definitely rank it in my top 5 of best games ever.
The most overhyped game ever has to be Horizons. Without the slightest doubt. Of all the unique and amazing features they announced years in advance, only playable dragons made it in.

Halo 2 I don't care if it had the best multiplayer experience on the xbox, the single player mode was rushed, unfinished and rubbish.
World of Warcraft To be honest EVE tained me. The biggest thing I hated about WOW was how your actions had zero effect. Go take down a bandit camp and it will respawn within minutes for someone else to do the same thing. If they added persistance and released a single player version I would pick it up in an instant.
I think they are the only 2 "over hyped" games I've been disapointed in for a very long time.

CoV. Never played CoH. Had to listen to former SWG buddies hastling me for 2 months after we all quit to start playing. Got it cheap off amazon. Character creation was fun, all downhill after that. Say what you will about WoW or SWG, but at least you can, like, quest for equipment, get items, do stuff.
Also, I think Final Fantasy X was overhyped. I saw some prelim concept art by Madureira, it looked amazing. Then the game comes out, and I drown in a world of shiny, happy, completely worthless, androgynous hermaphrodites who form a rock band. When staying up til 3 in the morning playing FF7, I never thought to myself, "You know what would make this game the greatest ever? Let's get rid of Cloud and replace him with a guy who plays soccer underwater."

Umm...when Half Life 2 came out it rocked hard for years to come. Doom 3 was kinda silly in its amusement park "House of Horrors" way (Oh look! A health pack right over there. I think I will go and pick it up-AAaahhh!) but it was still fun and I thought the graphics were amazing.
Really overhyped by it's makers was Pariah perhaps the worst FPS ever created. Halo 2 was not the game promised and hyped, so yeah dissapointment there. Forza sucked, who wants to spend hours tweaking a car to get an extra .5 seconds on a lap. Yep , so real it was boring.

Edited by: Aeina Caeraen on 25/05/2006 06:06:04 Half Life 2 and Halo 2 are, probably, the worst offenders, as far as their endings. Gameplay for both was pretty good, but their respective endings just plain sucked.
As far as sequels that ruined their franchises, I'd have to go with Homeworld 2, and Master of Orion III. Terrible.
I felt a lot more could have been done with Black and White II. It's a pity that -everything- EA touches these days has a "well, this was obviously rushed" feeling they just can't patch away.
I personally liked FFX, mainly because I consider Auron and Yuna the main characters, not Tidus :P, although Yuna did pick up a lot of Tidus's annoyingness in X-2 :/

I thought FFX was good Auron was one of the best characters they've made in quite some time. See FF8 for one of the worst FF's. Okay main character was a fruit but still a great game.
Halo i have to agree with. I turned off Halo2 after an hours play. I think they use a strange camera FOV it feels so claustrophobic at the begining. I think its overhyped.
Black n White 2 i have no idea about only played the first one. And after several hours of play got incredibly frustrated with it. It got sent sailing through the air in a graceful arc towards the bin.
Battlefield 2 met a likewise fate. The interface in that game was the devil. The devil incarnate, want to change your key settings hahaha go ahead and try mocks the devil ill inflict so much pain. Game didnt play so good either. It didnt feel like i was in a war zone, everything i fired didnt seem to have much 'impact' ?!?
Half-Life 2, urrrgh - big deep breathe - rant ahead!
The game to give it, its dues was quite addictive i rarely finish games now a days. But i had finished HL2 very quickly. However the sheer amount of akward backwards game design features in the game shocked me.
Probably every PC games mag gave it game of the year and generally worshipped it constantly. But i mean exploding barrels??? as ive said before they should have ACME printed on the side. Half the game was me aiming at a motionless convienyantly placed drum of high explosives. :(
Gaming media needs a kick up the arse if this is original FPS gaming at its greatest.
A FPS 'needs' to draw the player into its environment. The player should have to think about the surroundings and how to use them. Its simple pychology bring the player into your world and make them belive there apart of it. The result will be an incredibly pleased gamer. Frequently during HL2 i felt that i was not welcomed in but dragged in then given a quick beating and thrown back out.
Sections in HL2 like the contructing the wooden platform and shooting of barrels etc made me feel manipulated. Like heres the most obvious solution to the problem now spend the next 20minutes doing it while we point and laugh. The car and boat sections were likewise poor they were just a hold the button down and steer towards the ramp. ooh joy!
Finally in any FPS and there are many guilty ones of this particular evil, there should be a sense of impact of giving and recieving of 'impact' When i hit an enemy with a few burst rounds i dont want to see them continue to run at me unhindered. Likewise when i get hit i dont want to hear a meaningless thump and see a number reduce.
Make me feel like i did something wrong that i made a stupid mistake and that i shouldnt do it again. Ive said this before but firing 19 rounds at 1 soldier only for the 20th to drop him like bag of bricks is just stupid! A well placed shot should be rewarded. Likewise with vehicles hitting it straight on with a rocket should do minimal amount hitting it in a weaker spot should do much more - ie hit its tracks to stop it moving. I mean anything other than 3 rockets = deaths.
huff puff, rant almost over, huff puff get your fists out of your arses developers, huff puff

Halo 2, it would have been nice if they ******* finished the game instead of leaving it on a huge cliff. With tv series it's cool because we only have to wait a season to see what happens...with games you have to wait years.
Cliffhangers + games = worst idea ever
It had more problems as well but that was the main one for me.
Half-life 2 was a great game with very unsatisfactory ending, not as bad as Halo 2's but it's certainly up there.
I think these companies might be too scared of having a bad ending

Edited by: FooB2 on 25/05/2006 09:29:19 FFX was alright. FFX-2 is complete toss though.
at least FFX had the traditional battles in it that people have played and payed for the previous 13 games or whatever. god knows WHY squae turned around on a sequel and said "yeah, lets make a completely arse active battle system and call it revolutionary, because we know that changing things in the past 13 games made them best sellers". when i started playing it, i figured "ok, its a bit stupid, but ill probably get used to it". i got up to Baralai/vegnagun and i dont want to pick it up again.
people play FF for the amazingly linear storyline, with optinal sidequests and buckets of secrets/minigames, not this "choose youre own story" crap. if i wanted to choose my own story, id write a friggin book. if FF fans wanted change, they wouldve got bored LONG before the 13/14th game or whatever it is. bring back chrono trigger and FF2 :\

quoted cos its so so very true!
Also i forgot to mention all the videos that were shown before HL2 was released. The ones showing the dynamic AI, the really cool set pieces, and the striders doing cool stuff.
None of it was in the game, yet every major publication never brought it up. ú$ú$ú Strange That ú$ú$ú

Civ 4 got to be over hyped and possible as average as it can get, i still say civ 2 was the best as you could change the stats and pics of the icons if you were clever.
Wow definatly over hyped, and seems very boring, only bit of it that looks fun are gnomes, but even they have the same class¦s as all the other races, its limited and has no risk. ppl say omg i have to repair all my ultra uber stuff if i die.. so what at least you can get it all back. were the risk in the game weres the fun, bring on hardcore chars like in diablo and i might be tempted.
Also no one can accuse eve-online of ever being over hyped, after all i have never seen a advert in anything other than pc magazinzes, unlike the others which have both advatised on tv radio and just about any other media they ppossible can.
so coem one ccp get those trailers on the tv , unless you think the server couldnt cope witht the new influx of players

I can't think of any games that I have played and thought totally over-hyped. Then again I don't really pay much attention to the hype, and just take a game on it's merits when it does come out... and if I want to get a game I prefer to get a demo first if possible!
HL2 I enjoyed, but then again I didn't feel I had bought it as it were, seeing as I got a free copy with my graphics card! Not sure if I'd have bought it though...
One potential future overhyped game... Duke Nukem Forever... well if it ever comes out that is! IMO they are probs going to have to do a very good job with it if people are to not be feeling let down by it... But then again by then the devil may have a small icicle problem!

Im not lying people...Whats more it took a couple of rounds from this giganta gun to kill em - why when my boot and hand could have squashed em flat!
Horrible game devoid of all common sense.
