Looks like hardly a day goes by without someone mentioning Skyrim in the EVE Online forums, according to forum search. Oh Skyrim this and Skyrim that oh la-de-da. And what's it been, now, two and a half years since Skyrim was released back in 2011?
Over 20 million units sold. Nearly $1.5B in sales revenue. Development time: 3.5yrs costing $85million including marketing. Game developers employed: 90. Voice actors: 83. Yeah... if that's all really true uh-huh.
So what makes Skyrim so damn good that you must incessantly talk talk talk talk talk about Skyrim somewhere on the EVE Forums nearly every.. freakin.. day?!?!?! Ewwwwww! Skyrim this and Skyrim that talk talk talk TALK TALK... ack!
This is now the what, how, where, why, anything Skyrim thread. /me munches on your stolen sweetroll http://imgur.com/H7tM8YI |

So I gotz all the whole everything list of all Skyrim and what nots. But of course can you say Mods? so guess not all, but what there is that is, yes, good stuff. But I think that of it all, what stands out for me anyway, certainly the Black Hand - the Assassins guild. Little less clever than Oblivy, but pretty nice story progression all the same, and still with some little twists and turns, all bloody of course and stuck in deep. And yes, standing over the Emperors fresh corpse (see OP image) really gives a wonderful feeling of satisfaction that I changed the game world with nothing but a little poisoned dagger and a few arrows. Fulfilling, indeed.
But certainly, this soup is to die for. Now what were those ingredients again? Oh, of course A sweetroll (stolen no doubt) Vampire Dust Giant's toe And one septim Oh yeah, and that last secret ingredient The wonders of modern cuisine! But who would have thunk what came next, no?
But when all is said and done, the speaker must finish that next contract, of many to come, nothing as simplistically excellent as a well aimed bow shot at far-range. Poetry in motion.
And then off to find the next target. http://imgur.com/816g4zY

Because it's a freeform open world Because it uses skill based advancement without levels Because it's easily modable
The first two reasons remind me of another game .. you might have heard about it. It's called eve online.

it, however, needed over 100 mods, and his top-of-the-line i7 was running the game at about.... 10fps or so. in 1900x1080 or smth.
I also have a huge gripe with skyrim that can be sumrized with this picture.

The best part about Skyrim is that it reminds you of Morrowind.
It was pretty entertaining though. Over time the world started to feel a little generic and shallow. There's no powerful items or spells which makes loot uninteresting too... Enemies scale to your level so you never have a hard time winning a fight... But I'd say it was worth its price. The world is pretty and the exploration can be fun. Even if there's no cool treasure to be found and the dialogue is lacking because of expensive (and time consuming) voice acting.
At the moment I'm really looking forward to the new rpg's coming through kickstarter. Wasteland 2 and especially Pillars of Eternity (previously Project Eternity) and Torment: Tides of numenera. Those should not have the usual problems of today's rpg's. |

I mean at some point, I'd think it'd get pretty boring 1 hitting everything. So you are forced to have a lot of different gear for the encounter, rather than just one set of god-mode gear that deals with everything.

Aww, lemme guess, somebody stole your sweetroll.
Why do I play skyrim? Firstly, because of past elder scrolls games. The game is so flexible its unreal, just by switching a few mods around, I can go from the most powerful being to a nobody who has to scavenge for food, water and to set up camp at night. Ohand then there's the star wars mod <3 I don't have to quest, I can just explore for hours on end and probably Make the same amount of character progression. It really ticks that role play box for me, I can fully immerse myself in my character and play out my story.
I just hope zenimax doesn't ruin elder scrolls reputation with ESO. Ego Sum Mortem Incarnatum - I Am Death Incarnate |

Well, the difficulty of the game should go up if there is powerful equipment in the game. However, like I mentioned the difficulty in skyrim is pretty much scaled to match your character. This means any powerful equipment would break the balance. The result is that it barely matters what equipment you use and the player can prefer the equipment that looks the nicest (or something like that).
It's not just about power either. The items in Skyrim are not interesting. Here's an example: in TES 3: Morrowind there's an item called Scroll of Icarian flight. It boosts your acrobatics by 1000, giving you the ability to jump pretty much over the land (island?) or Morrowind. Now that's interesting. And fun. There are plenty more of these fun items and spells. In Skyrim the only interesting (not powerful) item is Wabbajack(?) which is essentially a magic wand that has a random effect on its target. The only somewhat powerful item I came across was a mask I got from one of those undead lich characters.
In Morrowind you can also craft your own magical items and even give them constant effects. For example you can craft a ring that gives you constant telekinesis. Of course you need a powerful soul and lots of money to do this. In Skyrim you're restricted to the exact magic and powers you took from existing items. So you can never craft a truly powerful item.
The thing I miss the most about Morrowind is the challenge in the exploration. There was no magical compass with quest markers and locations. There were directions that you had to follow. In Skyrim you just follow the magical compass :(
These are just a couple of examples that I'm using to make a point. That point is that Skyrim is dumbed down.
Sorry but I feel somewhat strongly about the direction the gaming industry has taken in the past 10 years or so. Games these days are too easy, too accessible (hate that word) and too casual. They're aimed at large audiences which means they cannot have mature themes or strong language. This means the games lack depth.
I'm not saying Skyrim is a bad game. I'm saying that the gaming industry is bad and that Skyrim could have been a lot better if it wasn't for the casual gamer. Still, according to steam I spent 62 hours playing Skyrim which means I enjoyed it to some extent.
Also, Skyrim was a lot better than Oblivion which was pretty horrid. |

Not sure what your beef is but man to me that was one of the greatest games ever made, maybe it's because I played it at a pretty young age but it was such a huge game at the time and there has never been anything quite like it (except for Skyrim).

Bischopt wrote:*said stuff* Not having god-mode equipment makes it more skill/tactical based. I carry many types of weapons and multiple sets of armor, half my weight in necessary gear. There are items that give constant effect, but yeah you are still unable to craft your way to god-mode your character unless you mod such items into the game. It's very good design imo. I don't want to play god-mode out of the box.
As for the compass and all that, wat? I'm here to break the news to you then that you are playing it wrong. Look at this screen short here and tell me what is missing. Though I cropped down the past two screen shots I posted, you don't even see cross-hairs in those shots. This shot is un-cropped, though scaled down for friendly interwebs screenshots. You can see the health bar and text on the scree to show it's not exaggerated. We play different I think, I really like the challenge... though reloading after a defeat can be annoying, yet still fun to push myself to do better. And in this shot, was definitely no one-hit encounter. If you don't like how easy it is, you make it harder. You didn't do that so you are just complaining how easy it is? What is so nice about Skyrim, Oblivion and Morrowind for that matter, is game play is not set in stone, you can make it more challenging. They designed it to fit your idea of how it should play, to change it to your liking, you are not stuck with it's out of the box state.
Skyrim like Oblivion (which was freaking awesome btw, especially knights of the nine) doesn't just scale up, it also upgrades random encounter types. So like if you notice for instance, there are different dragons, there are some more powerful types. You don't see those at lower levels, only until you level up then it will not only scale but upgrade. You don't see the change in static encounters, those are more scripted and simply scale, but in open world the random encounters usually upgrade. |
