Hey guys,
Just a quick backstory, I have played Eve a bit here and there, but I have never once taken part in PvP. I knew nothing about it. You have 3 char slots in eve but may only train one character at a time, unless you pay more money. (this system works very very well, all skills are based on real time). So i decided to do something i thought, at the time was going to be.. a disaster...
P V P
I don't know why i did this, I was bored and I wanted something fun to do. So I created a character, with no help from anyone or anything, and decided I was now, a pirate. I followed my storyline quest a bit, got a good ship through it, and all the fittings i needed. I made a few million Isk and I was ready to head out to the unknown of space and hopefully shoot down a scrub a dub dub.
This changed everything.
I went to a system, where there was no security at all, ships were free to kill, loot, steal, cheat, pillage anything they desired (pretty friggen cool). I found a system that was quite busy at the time, I warped into the station, checked things out. Wanted to see how many people where there, how many criminals. Its very important to be very thorough and safe in EvE. I decided to pick off a ship about the size of my own, but probably (but who cares) way stronger then myself. I scanned him down. I warped in on him. I locked his ship down so he couldn't fly away from me, or warp out. I began to fire on him, he returned fire, and then...
I blew up.
This led to a good fight chat in general, where I talked about why I was 1 day old and in 0.0 space trying to become a pirate, I told them that there is no better way to find out if you can swim, then swimming for your life.
Next thing i knew, I was in their corp. I was already part of a pirate crew. I was pumped, I read this mail they sent me as I joined.
It was long... as ****
I followed every word, i read every guide and spreadsheet they sent me to. It took a couple hours, It was hard to stick to, but I was determined to give this a shot. Soon after, I was setup in low sec space, never to return to the lights of security systems again. I was now a real pirate.
The post had some long lengthy speech about how ambition was the best way to learn to pvp from the best. It had one section that told me to jump into a fleet, and go fly with them to learn.
I was going to do this. I could handle it.
I hoped
I join a fleet, its about 10pm. I'm nervous, they are already talking words i never have heard. Abbreviations I had no idea what they were. This was...
overwhelming.
I decided to stick with it, **** it i knew i was getting shot down out here. That's why i'm here.
We get the call to warp into our first encounter. Were about 30 ships strong.
We warp
I don't know what is about to happen.
I get in, there is another 30-40 ships waiting for us.
THINGS EXPLODE... Everyone is shouting, were shooting ships down. Everyone is calling out targets, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I AM DOING. I hear a call "target logics" So i immediately jump on a Scythe and I scramble and web it.
I start to shoot it.
I'm still alive..
There is now 60 or 70 ships flying around, and i'm actually doing something. and best of all, I'M ALIVE.
I shoot down a ship (Clearly not alone)... my first ship.. my first flight.. wow this rocks.. but im still so very lost...
Hours later, were hunting down fleets of ships. I've got a kill or 2 under my belt. Damn this is cool. We lose a scout in a gate camp. Were down to logics.. and one frigate. The call is made.. for a new +1
That's me...... how... the hell...
I'm like SCREW IT. I'm doing this, I ask simple fast questions, I said This is my 2nd day, I don't know what i'm doing, but If you tell me what to do, and you trust me, I will get it done.
The call is a go..
I'm now warping blind into every system we go to. i'm the bait ship, maybe that's for the best.
We jump into a gate, there's 20 ships on the other side, I warp away to a planet as fast as i can, The call is made to jump the gate and engage.
Were in another fire fight. I'm taking down another Scythe (i'm good at this part now, I'm fully confident in my ability to target scythe's). We fight, i'm shot down... I am starting to lose hope right away. We disengage the enemy, slightly beaten.
We dock up, get new ships and head back out to gank them right away. We engage again. This time, I am a lot more careful.
I lock down a ship, Assisted kill ( thats a thing right? I'm proud of it dammit)
Another ship, Assist
A pod floating in space, being pushed around... Targeted, Locked down.. Kill
We fight them for a while, chasing the stragglers. Then we start to break apart, We have now been at it for 4 hours. Big ships dock up and go home. Were left with a handful of ships. We all get a gang of frigates.
Now everyone is at my size, and now i know what i'm doing... sortof, I feel good.
We go out, picking on solo or small gangs of ships. Dog fighting till about 7am. I have no idea where the sun came from all i know is that I was so far gone, i had just had. .. The best night of gaming, in my life.

I find its a lot better to be very open minded about everything. So When someone says it starts with PvP maybe there is a hidden truth i was unsure about.

So, you had HOURS AND HOURS to spend just having a few fights? Wow, it is true that not having a life is good for your EVE... Q: So many well known dev's left lately, should we be worried? A: (Jester): Nope. (...) Worry a lot if Fozzie, Masterplan, Rise, Veritas, Bettik, Ytterbium, Scarpia, Arrow, or even Greyscale leaves. Worry a little if Punkturis, karkur, SoniClover, Affinity, Goliath, or Xhagen leaves.

Yes I did, i spent hours and hours enjoying my personal hobby , like most normal human beings do :) . You should try it since it seems you could use some stress relief. It was fantastic and it cost me $20 to do this for 31 days. Let me know how much your hobby costs.

Without ruining the experience of Exploration and what I will get to see. Any suggestions or tips are welcome. Please keep bringing me smiles and friendly responses.

not legit? When did I try to get anything out of anyone? No one is asking you to hang around here. I love the people I have met here so far. If there comes a time when i'm actually trying to scam something out of someone, then you can spew your nonsensical bull-fruit.
I have also openly posted my character and my pvp toon. Why the heck do i care. I want to meet these people and if its in the cards, get blown up by them all. Maybe, JUST maybe i'll get to blow one of them up, or maybe at least put up a good fight.
Just because your in a game where people cheat and steal (hate to tell you but this is just as likely in the real world) doesn't mean everyone having a good time is out to do the same.

I can imagine there's a few people shocked that I like the story (if they're aware how I rant against PvP in general and ganking in particular).
I especially like how the OP found people who actually helped learn the system and have fun. If I had gotten such help when I started, I probably wouldn't be so against PvP, but I still would hate ganking. |

Tank the Drake correctly and you will be able to run L4's in it. Just be careful running extravaganza. and make a choice of HAM versus HM. If you go HAM you need something to swat those pesky webbing rats. |

Miko Sunji wrote:Hey guys,
Just a quick backstory, I have played Eve a bit here and there, but I have never once taken part in PvP.
15 years of online gaming. Today changed it all.
At first I was hesitant to judge this, but after seeing how the hread evolved, I wil just say that the OP played it very well. Nice troll, dude. Very, very nice troll. :slowclap: |

Everything I have read said that Drakes are far to slow on L4s, that doing L3s in a drake earns more isk/hr then doing L4s in a drake.
I have already trained up T2 Hams, so i'll maybe switch to a tengu instead, since they can do T4's seem to be reasonably priced, even with all those system things I have to buy.

I made this toon almost a year a go to get in FW and PVP, and it's only been within the last few months that I've started to get my pirate legs and get more kills than losses.
I wish I could have started out just as you did.

I think it will be a while before my kills are higher then losses, but as long as my isk % is good for the time being i'd be happy. |

If staying in hisec and away from PvP provided as many tools and mechanics to generate your own content as PvP does, EVE would be in the millions of subscribers.
Rather than hope that 1 in a thousand noobs "gets it" on his own (assuming this thread is not a troll), CCP would be smart to ensure that whatever noobs got on their own, it was a right thing to do. According to CCP there is no 'new player retention' problem.
After all, that's why they keep making it easier to gank in high sec.

I have NEVER based anywhere except high sec. I do not PvP, join player corps, mine in low sec or null sec, or buy plex (on a scholarship budget). I do not 'multi-box' or 'afk mine'.
I mine in high sec, build what I can, buy what I want.
Now, with just over a year of playing EvE, I have over 100 ships and 4 billion isk. These assets are now on a new toon building skills for use.
I know other players have more ships/isk, but I am satisfied with my success so far and don't plan to change. I even sent Miko 500 million isk for that excellent OP.
My whole point is staying is high sec and mining CAN work if you're patient. I got my patience from being a Over-The-Road trucker for 19 years. That patience is not very common. If CCP wants to retain new players, they need to realize new player need some idea they can actually succeed without having to join a player corp.

Yes, of course it works... for a couple of years. Then you will have several accounts, will be running a POS or doing advanced PI stuff, will have collected several BPOs and will be chuggin along, happy to have achieved your goals. Then, one day, you will wonder what else is left to do, where does your mastery of hisec take you next.
Then EVE will backstab you and once you're on the ground, staring at the ceiling in disbelief as life and hope abandon you, she will pee in your face and shout: "PvP, a-hole! You should had been exploding ships all the time as there is nothing else left to do and I'd rather die than give you anything worth your time, effort and money... You Disgusting Useless CAREBEAR!!!"
Which translated into developer lingo, is: "now you should leave your comfort zone, meet other people and kill them to explore the other tools provided by the sandbox".
Preferably from day 1.
Preferably by making friends first at Something Awful if your goal is nullsec.
That, or buy the same Lucky Ticket as the OP... Q: So many well known dev's left lately, should we be worried? A: (Jester): Nope. (...) first of all, I'm only running one account and don't plan to run a second.
second, I am comfortable in my comfort zone and will leave the game before leaving high sec unless miners can be armed.
third, null sec is not my goal (neither is low sec)

Those are four of the reasons why 80% of players leave the game. And CCP is convinced than the solution is, rather than value those customers and check what can EVE do for them, just push those suckers harder into becoming like the 20%. But you must remember. The demographic that plays online games the most is the 12-18 year old male.
That demographic is not interested in long-terms objectives, plans, or results. That demogrphic wants bloody shoot-em-ups, violence, and mindless slaughter.
It is that immature mindset that CCP is trying to cater to. CCP has no desire to consider the needs and desires of the more mature players who were initially attracted to the game in its earlier years.
CCP (and many other online gaming companies) have failed to realize that the pre-teens, teenagers, and young adults who enjoyed gaming when the industry was in its infancy are now older, wiser, and more mature.
We now have life experiance. We have seen real life and know battle is NOT the glorious blood-letting we imagined it was when we played before. We are not so satisfied with mindless violence. We desire more fulfilling pursuit in our recreation, now.
There is no reason a game as varied and huge as EvE should be limitted to immature blood-letting when it can so easy emcompress so much more mature pursuits as well. |

What is this obsession with pvp? I mean, I heartily congratulate the OP on embracing Eve and for having a great time, and I enjoyed reading the story.
Personally - and I don't care what the haters will say - I'd love someone to come with a noob story and say "I got myself a covops and traversed the universe in search of adventures and riches and loved it" and for the community to respond with - awesome, glad to hear it.
People keep mentioning low player rentention and suggesting it has to do with being wardecced or that they aren't properly eased into pvp.
My view - and a personal experience - is that most people come from PVE mmos and when they encounter the visually beautiful Eve they think they are going to experience the best PVE of their gaming lifetime. After completing the training missions the biggest cry you hear is ...so what now? Well go join a gank corp and blow some ships up, is the reply. Hmmm, isn't that a little soulless? A tad dull?
What would maintain new player rentention and boost numbers is PVE - lots of it, deep lore, factions actually mean something, each player faction having unique attributes....well, I've talked about this before, the list is endless. I imagine most - and I've talked to quite a few - who abandon Eve after a few days/weeks go back to PVE-centric mmos.
I love EvE - and I love the unique aspects, including the danger of being ganked and all the pvp related stuff. don't mind it at all. Just a little tired of all those who shout - now this guy "gets it". Well I get it - but pvp does not interest me. I continue playing because eve is the most intelligent and visually stunning game around - but I only keep playing with the hope that PVE will one day become a primary focus. |

Agreed all the way up to "the hope that PVE will one day become the primary focus." That would detract so much from the very essence of EVE. I hope one day that people will just stop sneering at other people's choice of gameplay. Probably too much to hope for.

Thanks.
I did say, however, that I look forward to PVE becoming a primary focus. I would never want Eve to lose its pvp-focus and I'm glad there are many who enjoy this aspect of the game.
I'm just saying that PVP and its discussion seems to be the only thing many are interested in and I often feel as if it's being "shoved down my throat"- including the devs from the comments made. Also if you look at new releases they are usually centred around pvp. I believe one of the reasons for this is that pvp mechanics are cheap and easy to produce. Creating a deep and meaningful PVE experience will take time/money/dedication. But if they ever decide to take this leap many more will play. |

Well, the market is full with PvE titles, whose developers can't develop them fast enough to cope with the passive consumption of such PvE content. If it takes a motnh to make a dungeon and a week to minmax it, there is no way developers can keep the pace with players.
When CCP was developing EVE, they were aware that they couldn't afford to develop the game themselves, not as they wanted it. Thus they made a game that was more of a toolbox than a ride.
This way, players would generate the content consumed by other players, and it was a briliant idea.
It has worked for 10 years in a row.
But it had an Achilles heel, one which went largely unnoticed for years as things looked pretty.
That weak spot was PvE. Players couldn't generate PvE, in no way. And EVE's PvE was abysmally bad. Yet despite that, PvE was the main reason why people played EVE, and paid CCP for it.
So as EVE grew itself a fame as the game where player generated PvP was epic, the game was actually being paid because of the terrible and universally frowned upon PvE.
Until CCP attempted to expand the gameplay, fix the old engine, sort some critical isues and many more things all at once.
Incarna flopped and CCP no longer worked on PvE. Fixing the existing game -fixing the PvP- was more pressing. Not gettign new content nor the promsie for it, PvEr stopped joining the game. CCP resold the game to existing PvPr and accounts per player rose as activity stagnated.
And now... activity is going down. PvP claim that *they* are leaving the game, but let's be real: PvErs always outnumbered PvPrs.
CCP can't just start developing PvE content so it's consumed as usual. They need PvE that is generated by the players so the large playerbase they used to enjoy can come back and play EVE their way -trusting NPCS rather than risk being victmized by players. But that will have to wait until PvP is expanded in 2015... and it is uncertain how many people will be left by then, both ingame and at CCP. I'm curious where did you find that numbers...
According to some random "googled" source:
"It is easy to dismiss video games as pointless activities that only teenagers indulge in. The truth is that the average age of MMORPG players is around 26. In fact, only 25% of MMORPG players are teenagers. About 50% of MMORPG players work full-time. About 36% of players are married, and 22% have children. So the MMORPG demographic is fairly diverse, including high-school students, college students, early professionals, middle-aged home-makers, as well as retirees. In other words, MMORPGs do not only appeal to a youth subculture."
According to some other professional sources:
"31
The average age of todayGÇÖs gamer." If your balls are hurt and bleeding don't sit in a pool full of piranhas (note to myself: don't complain in GD) |

It's weird reading some of the posts here with ppl saying that don't PvP...
I would like to ask them:
1) Do you sell or buy anything on the market?
2) Do you manufacture anything?
3) Do you run any exploration site as fast you can before someone else shows up?
4) Do you block/ignore scammers in Jita?
5) Do you stop doing your missions and log or move out when you see the local chat infested with, errr, "griefers"?
6) Do you write in the forum to argue about any aspect of the game you disagree?
I could think on several other questions but, for now, these are enough. If you answer yes to any of the questions above I can be sure you like PvP.
That or I'm pretty lost about what is Player-versus-Player, any thoughts?
On the other side, if you say yes to any of that questions and you think you really don't like PvP, well, there are plenty of solo games around that you can have blasts of fun being smarter than the NPC... (OMG, I still remember the complains of ppl when NPC's AI was changed and they started switching targets).
I will tell you why I come and go from EVE each year: My main is a mission runner, I created a 2nd account to be a industrial Char but ended as support to the mission runner, I created a 3rd account to be PvPer but ended as support to the mission runner.
So, to be totally honest with you and all other people reading this: I asked to be bored and go look for other greener pastures from time to time, unfortunately, it's not a choice of heart for me but just because I don't trust anyone playing this game (rule Nr 1, remember?).
I can assure you one single thing: The best moments of my gaming life (and is a long one, do you know Space Invaders from Atari, back in 1978?) was doing PvP in EVE, and when I mention PvP I'm saying hitting people with my blasters, arty, drones, missiles whatever I had on my hands to throw on them.
Great post OP! Kudos

Thank your for this post! It made me feel so much younger.
It is exactly this kind of ethusiasm that makes Eve so special! Hope you will continue to have good times like this. Most important you already learned the major point of Eve: Eve is about HOW to loose your ships and enjoy loosing it!

Dear OP
Let this thread be a reminder that:
1. You need to make your own fun in this game. You took a risk and it paid off. It won't always be like this but it can always be better. This is a game about your story and your journey
2. This game has an amazing community. We want you to grow and enjoy the game. We want you to have more days like this with more tales to tell. Most importantly we want to destroy everything you have just so you can learn and come back stronger.
This world is only as big as your dreams and knowing your have to toil, sweat and kill makes those dreams that much sweeter
The skies are yours...for now
Welcome to New Eden

You left yourself open for so many snide comebacks (and you knew it), but i somehow didn't have the heart to do it.
Guess it was because THIS thread just seems like the wrong place for such antics.

I've really been struggling with figuring out what kind of ships I stand a chance against.
I'm mostly using Atron
Atron T2 Ion blasters Knave Neut
Upgraded 1mn Warp scram 2 X5 Web scram
Small ancillary Micro Aux power Magnetic Vortex Stab I
Small processor overclocking unit Small hybrid collision
I would love any suggestions or feedback. I have yet to kill anyone 1v1. However I enjoy fleets, i just wish 1v1's weren't so hard to find.

I wish I could help you, but I have no expertise in combat PvP. Anything I say would very likely be wrong or misguided. |

One thing I love to do is go to Faction Warfare and fit a frigate with as many armor plates as possible, then try to be primary in a frigate fleet. Takes a while to chew through those plates, and time is money in Eve.
If you havent done so already, Pyfa is a good fitting tool to use for fitting ships, so you can see what other ships strengths and weaknesses are.
Great read Miko. |
