The mission payouts for haulage are effectively identical with those for combat missions of a same level/quality. The big difference is you don't get any bounties for hauling stuff.
No combat skills are necessary. You might need WCS and speed if you're working in low-sec, to avoid player pirates. Otherwise, it is literally just "pick up item A from station X, and move it to station Y."
At level four, "Item A" might be anything up to 100,000 cubic metres of stuff, but it can be moved in chunks. You don't HAVE to have a freighter to run them; I do fine in an Iteron V with secure cans in it. ________________________________________________

Dont really know what you're puzzling over, they're real simple.
You get them from agents in stations - types of agents like Production, Marketing, Archives tend to give large numbers of these missions. They will somtimes propose a kill mission, you can turn those down if you don't want them. They will also sometimes propose missions where you are supposed to buy something on the market and bring it to them. But they give a majority of straight courier missions.
The mission will tell you to haul something from point a to point b. (And sometimes something else then from point b to point c, point c to point d etc.)
Do what it says.
They pay a reward and a time bonus if completed quickly.
Some of them will involve starting or finishing in low sec systems. You may want to turn those down as well.
There is no combat involved except what might happen to anyone who goes into a low sec system. No combat is built into a courier mission.
Look at the details on the mission you are offered before accepting, it will tell you the size of the cargo, what you are supposed to do, if any of the systems are low sec, and what the reward is.

Edited by: Prant on 13/06/2006 11:41:46 And the preceding post is almost correct - I recently had one level three mission which required moving a single large item that could not be divided. An industrial was necessary for the mission. But the smallest industrial was good enough. Its the only one I saw so far that was not divisible. Check your cargo size before accepting.

if you have regional GTG bookmarks , hauling missions can be very profitable. I dont, so i Dont do them.
