Just noticed Ghana is in Group G, and I kinda feel for them now, knowing how good they did all things considered last World Cup. Now they're stuck in a group with Portugal, Germany and the US, where there's virtually no chance of them getting out of that. I might just buy a Ghana jersey out of pity. |

I'm in Madrid, but I was born missing the chunks of the brain that makes people appreciate football, spectacle sports, or identifying / rooting for a team, so I couldn't care less about this whole world cup business.
Yesterday though, I was minding my own business at home, laying on the couch by the window enjoying the evening breeze, when ghoulish moans and screams started to creep up my window, intermittently. I hadn't realized the world cup had started yet, nor that Spain was playing already, so I was entertaining the thought of some form of zombie apocalypse or another befalling us, while my neighbors were being dismembered and devoured.
No shooting zombies today though: 5-1, that explains things

Tbh it being 1:0 at half time then CIR came back.
Im looking forwards to japan greece. Greece is a very defensive side, and this years japan side is attack dominated. Going to be interesting. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Germany /Ghana was a really exciting game to watch, at least the second half. But maybe only because we were at a public screening and had enough beer to enjoy about everything that could have happened.
Then again, big kudos to Ghana, great game!

Ghana really put it all out there too, I was hoping that they could win but a draw against a team like Germany is good too.
Messi gets it done against Iran as well. I hope that Argentina and Uruguay manage to meet at some point during this World Cup, if only for how great a match like that would turn out. |

What an amazing story told out there on the pitch and one of the reasons that I love this sport. Ronaldo may not have been on point because of his injury but props to the rest of of the Portuguese team, they were really on point just like the U.S today.

You're right. At the time I posted that I knew they won vs Algeria but I had the notion that they might end up like Italy where they'd win one but then be eclipsed by others in the group. Today has shown this not to be the case though, and they now qualify for the knockout stages (and I think Algeria will be breaking out with them) |

Not apparently, he actually did it on purpose, as always.
And that is escalating pretty fast on the news media not only in Brazil but all around the world right now. FIFA will need to take the appropriate action against such things.

Seriously. It's a disgrace that the ref and FIFA didn't act on it, considering the VISIBLE teeth marks on Chiellini's body. Yet Marchisio gets ejected for something that could have just been a yellow card at best.
It's really sad that someone as gifted and as good as Suarez is prefers to squander his talent by being violent out on the field, not to mention the racial abuse he shouted at Patrice Evra years back and the blatant handball against Ghana last WC (which isn't really that much of an issue, but still makes him look like a scumbag). I'd say that Suarez should seek psychiatric help for the issues that he would clearly have, but it seems that not only Suarez himself, but the Uruguayan team, its coach, and much of Uruguay's native fanbase seem to have absolutely no problem with it, even going as far as to put the guy that got bit at fault. Disgusting. |

F+¦tbol's popularity has been evolving/escalating for the past 30 years in the States. The last 3 World Cups have actually been a big deal in the States. Unfortunately the Men's squad has failed to do much in them and were eliminated early so the hype was smothered very quickly. The Women's squad has been a dominant force on the World level for 15-20 years and their Tournaments get solid viewership as well. That being said if you are not a regular sports enthusiast then it is still fairly easy to miss. The increased exposure of the World Cup in the States is due to the combined effect of another 4 years of popularity rise of the sport and the fact that, even though the US drew into the 'Group of Death', their chances for advancing is the greatest in a very, very long time.
EDIT: As for the bitter, when does something like that actually become a crime? |

Suarez takes bite out of online bookmaker 25 June 2014 Last updated at 18:10 BST
A Norwegian man has won 17,000 kroner (-ú2,000, $2,850) after betting that striker Luis Suarez would bite someone during the World Cup.
Online bookmaker Betsafe had been offering odds of 175/1 that the Uruguayan would attack an opponent in Brazil.
Suarez denies claims that he bit Italy's Giorgio Chiellini during Tuesday's match, but the sport's governing body, Fifa, has opened an investigation into the claim.
Richard Helmersen, 24, who originally put down 100 kroner (-ú10, $16), told Norway's NRK he wanted to "say thank you to Luis Suarez". "Were [sic] not your monkey and so what?"-á -The Sex Pistols (2006) |

Well deserved. Liverpool diehards can whinge about it as much as they want but it's a much needed ban. Suarez should seek help in the meantime and take a good look at all the talent he's squandering in himself. |

So close for the US team! Tim Howard put on a goalkeeping clinic, although he really shouldn't have had to. It's a shame they went out in the round of 16, I was hoping they'd get to the quarterfinals at least. They're by no means a footballing powerhouse like the other nations still in the WC, but their efforts as well as their underdog status in their group and vs Belgium won me over. I'm enthusiastic about what the future will hold for them.
I'm glad Costa Rica is still hanging on though. I'm hoping they manage to upset the Dutch like they've managed to do to the other teams that have been the favorites over them. |

Yay! Belgium won!
However, I have to say, I already know the man of the Worldcup, That US goalkeeper Tim Howard was darn impressive, turned what had to be a easy one-sided goal-scoring match into a nailbiting nightmare!
All in all, US can still walk away with their heads held high, they survived a tought group and now hold the record in most saves in a single worldcup match. That'll be a though one to beat! In the future, whenever some goalkeeper does an impressive number of saves in a worldcup, they'll always say "But US did better in 2014" until someone breaks that record. I had no idea WTF the coach was thinking taking Campbell off. He could have created the lead that Costa Rica needed to win the match and avoid having to take penalties in the first place. Navas is a great goalkeeper but eventually he's going to let one slip through either in the game or in penalties, as did Ochoa and Howard. Good defense may keep the opposing team from scoring but that doesn't always assure a victory.
I think it will be Germany and Netherlands to the finals, with Brazil and Argentina competing for 3rd. Germany and Netherlands are two teams that have excellent players making up much of the teams, whereas Argentina has to rely on Messi, and Neymar for Brazil (and he's out with an injury anyways).
With US and CRC out then I'll go back to backing the orange. It was sweet revenge to see them destroy Spain at the start and they have the great talent in guys like Van Persie, Robben, Depay etc. to get it done, plus the determination to finally get to the top. |

Maybe..just maybe- the German team was pretending to be weaker than it actually was, so the "serious" opponents like Brazil would underestimate them. But then again, these guys aren't exactly deep thinkers or expert strategists, so I believe the real reason for this was simply good luck.

At times you just gotta have your day.We , the dutch, had that in our first game against spain.Everything just went in the best way it could , but you only get one of those games in a tournament and looks like the germans had that yesterday.
That said , even though us dutch are not too fond of ZE GERMANZ and they are our arch enemy in football i have to say i am glad they won.Brazil came this far mostly with thanks to the referees while Germany did it on their own strenght.
Curious to see what today will bring , Argentina depends on messi mostly where the dutch team seems to hang on robben. This game can go either way depending wich of the former two is having his bad day/good day and just maybe van persie finally get's a bit alive again after playing 2 horrible games in a row.
Not sure if i want us to go through though. The idea of playing another worldcup final in 4 years time and again loosing it and this time of all teams versus Germany then i'd rather get thrown out in the semi-finals .

I heard on NPR that many may be blaming Brazil's president and the staggering loss may affect her reelection! from the days when Scolari was our country's coach, my guess is that germany simply went for an effective tactic against Scolari's game method which is, putting it simple, "joga bonito" (play it beautiful)
the way to **** up Brazil's game is to simply follow a "no-game" tactic. Saw Greece doing it in 2004 with great efficiency, and if you put Germany's already world-class players doing it, this result isn't as far fetched as it seems. It's a tactic that works wonders on more technical teams like Brazil, and Portugal too if you think about it. It also doesn't work that good when you go for teams that play it straight (USA). I heard on NPR that many may be blaming Brazil's president and the staggering loss may affect her reelection! from the days when Scolari was our country's coach, my guess is that germany simply went for an effective tactic against Scolari's game method which is, putting it simple, "joga bonito" (play it beautiful) the way to **** up Brazil's game is to simply follow a "no-game" tactic. It seems like Germany took it easy because we mentioned we might stop tapping their phones it probably wasn't worth it for them to risk playing hard against a mediocre team?
The US squad has a recent history, last 15 years, of playing very strong against Germany. Plus, 3 of our starters (dual nationals) were raised in the German farm system and were actively recruited by our coach who just so happens to be an ex-German National head coach. Plus pretty much his whole staff are still in the same positions as they were in when he was the head coach.

I say make the extra periods 10 minutes and keep playing sudden death until someone scores a 'legitimate' goal. |

Probably Germany can just score two or three goals while Argentina tries to not lose the match until they can win at the penalites. Q: So many well known dev's left lately, should we be worried? Brazil doesn't seem to be putting up much of a fight for 3rd. Thinking Holland will take it despite Van Gaal running down being in that position in the first place.
I'd really love for Germany to win to show that it's a team effort that wins championships, not relying on one man. I suppose I wouldn't mind an Argentina win as much as I did before, though. Messi hasn't been outstanding this WC I think, but if he gets yet another award to add to his repetoire, that's fine. I do like him in Barcelona too. |

Great final! Gotze is the hero of Germany right now, and Messi couldn't carry Argentina all the way, even if the two disallowed offside goals were considered.
However, Kramer really should have been off the pitch the moment he went down, and had someone escort him off instead of just leaving him to walk off on his own. Concussions are serious business, and FIFA shouldn't wait for someone to end up having a stroke, pulling a Chris Benoit, or dying as a result to act on it. |

I'm sorry. You must be mistaken us for someone who thought they where going to be champions from day one and not for a team that grew with each mach up until the finals.
