I think that EVE should be a BB only game, this is because it would allow CCP to incorporate feautres that use up more bandwidth than a dial-up connection can handle. I also think it would help reduce in game lag, becuase I dont think there is a single player that hasnt experienced lag of some sort when interactin with a user who uses dial-up. I dont think this would be much of a problem becuase most people have at least dsl access and if someone can afford to play the game i think they would at least be able to afford a better conection.

Okay, YOU hunt down the internet providers for ALL areas, and beat them over the head until broadband is an OPTION. Once everyone has a choice, one way or the other, can start making consiquences for those choices.
From those of us who have the choice of dial up or nothing, I strongly say let dial up remain.

The lag come froms one too many secure cans. Dial up would not effect server performance anymore than broudband. What it would effect is how fast a person on dialup is able to react to events. IE Rats that show while their connection is downloading. Dial-up puts the owner of the DU at a disadvantage and the people with broadband at an advantage. Anything more than that is just cruel. And the only way for it to improve server performance is because there would a lot less people online.

I think this will become quite a hot topic for eve in the next 2-3 years since its probably the game where it would make the biggest difference because of the engagement size.(Fleet battles)
North America will be ready for this in around 2 years.(Canada is already ready) As for Europe, its depends widely of the countries. Maybe at some point it will make sense for them to make eve the first broadband-singleworld-non-instanced virtual world, personnaly I think its just the next step. Who doesnt want 1k vs 1k epic fleet battles with no lag? The CPU power should be there with the incoming virtualization on the eve cluster and the bandwidth will be the next limiting factor. Maybe it will have to be done in a way that broadband users gets more "bonuses" but the basic features are dialup compatible. I think the VOIP (vivox) feature is a good example of the game becoming broadband.

Really the only way to decrease any lag is to have essentially a low quality version of the client. Named Cans will only show up under show info. Polygon resolution reduced. Packets will be sent in smaller but faster intervols.
Basically decrease all aspects of the game which causes the computer to waste bandwidth on. Which would be optimal for large fleet engagements.

Why don't you get Time Warner Cable to run the line about 200 more yards so I can get Cable? hmmm? Or tell Altell to offer DSL to my area? I can pee into NC largest ciity from my back porch, and I don't have Broadband access, why should I not be able to play EvE? as for the new voice being offered with Kali, I get along fine with TS and 15 vs 15 scirmishes.

Some people can't get broadband. No ADSL for those >6km from the local exchange and no cable companies like NTL or Telewest with a service locally.
Oh dear, they can;t play Eve any more. I hope you would take it on yourself to visit them and explain that it's for the benefit of the rest of us that they have to give up their favorite game. Oh and maybe CCP will use your email address for anyone wanting to make their comments about it known, you can have all the hate mail that it would generate.

ok it has been stated before that eve doens't have lag because of transmition time.
Eve-radio uses more bandwidth a month than eve does. all the lag is all from the servers and the client doing things.
so baning dial up would achieve nothing.
you SHIFT-CTRL-ALT-M and watch the bandwith, it rarly peaks over 50k of data a second.

At least some form of broadband access is available for 80 to 90% of the us http://www.freepress.net/docs/broadband_report.pdf so I dont think that availability is of major concern, also most of it is realtively cheap with the majority of prices between 30$ and 60$ a month. So if you are lucky (or unlucky) enough be be in the small margin without access you do have a reason to complain, but if you have access and are choosing not to get it, then that should be your own decision that if you dont get it you may not be able to play eve.
Making EVE a broadband only game doesnt mean that evreybody will have to have the fastest connection since the FCC defines brodband as starting at 200KBPS (Kilobytes Per Second, which is a 25Kbyte Per Second max Download Speed). And even if the game were to go to bb it wouldnt necessarily mean that players with slower connections wouldnt be able to play but it would mean that they woulnt be able to experience the game like someone with a faster connection.
I think that the benefit of even doubling the bandwidth used would have a major impact on gameplay, I think it would also remove alot of the lag in the game in general and allow CCP to design or bring back features that would cause lag on a slower connection. Things such as mines or a higher drone limit may be possible to return if eve were broadband only. And there always could be options added into the client that would allow players on low connections to connect faster.

If other people are lagging then it does not effect you in the slightest.
You are talking with the server - not the other people.
So long as you can keep up with the server and the server can keep up with what is happening then you have no lag. Even if one of the other pilots is based on the moon with 5 seconds latency.

You obviously dont work in the telecomunications buisness in the UK. Trust me its not easy getting 100% coverage, And its not easy getting a decent signal strength on all 100% broudband customers.
Just because your provider says up to 8 meg conection doesant mean you will get it if you pay for it. [ i pay for a 2 meg connection right now but can only have a 1 meg one becaus ethe signal isant strong enough to make a stable 2 meg signal.
Besides it would be hardly fare on the modem users now would it?
EDIT: Oh almost forgot Modems dont affect Lag AT ALL in eve if someone lagged out his ship would just respond slower. To everyone else they probably wouldnt notice him lagging out. -----------------------------------------------

did you know that most of the rural USA doesnt have broadband? same is could be said for rural Europe as well im sure. and FYI the server doesnt need to send more data to reduce lag. the game client is the source of what you consider lag due to the client itself being inefficent. when you exit warp at a gate in Jita the server allready knows those people are there the lag is your system attempting to load the models of those ships.(i know the client is the source of most of the lag because my bitrate doesnt change much even when exiting into a mass of ships. however memory, HDD and CPU load skyrocket).
MMORPGs are 90% client side and 10% network, remember ships and weapons fire is just minor data packets. the EVE client gets these packets and then its up to your CPU, Memory, HDD and GPU to keep up with what needs to be shown. this is why turning off effects is more important to fleet battles then the bandwidth. point proven i used to do 80man raids in Everquest on a 28.8 connection.

What? Huh?
Eve will send data to you as fast as it can. If you have broadband you will recieve it at broadband speeds.
It's not like a road where you get stuck behind some old granny in your sports car...everyone gets their own lane on this one...
And as people have said, the problem isn't usually bandwidth - it's CPU time.

Ok it doesnt seem that we are on the same page here. I am saying that EVE should design for a faster connection so that we can have more features, things are dulled down partially to prevent players on slower connections from getting too much lag, things like mines have been removed and we now have less drones also. I am saying that the standard need to be for a faster connection so we can have things that are more connection intensive. And anyways I dont get lag at stargates, and the only lag i really get is market lag. And I also get lag around massive can feilds.

no PC game will be Broadband only for awhile now if it is to be marketed outside of asia(where they have fiber trunks to every home). take the midwestern US, lots there have no high speed because our greedy telcos and cable cos refuse to deploy outside of burbs and cities.

1) Its the servers that lag, not the speed of the connection. EvE is not bandwidth intensive.
2) This may come as a bit of a shock to you but theres more countries in the world than the good 'ol US of A.
Perhaps you could find a report that shows more than one country in your (and I use this term lightly) "research" on high speed internet statistics.

What kind of features do you think would be facilitated by universal broadband?
Assume for a moment that CCP had a win button that would make its servers uber and able to handle everything that they currently do, plus the new load of the network intensive features, and that the client was rewritten by Jovians to actually make your computer run faster while you play.
What do you want to add? VoIP? Streaming webcam video of your face in Local? Scanning through stargates? What?

Broadband is simply not an option for everyone. The fact is Eve is not bandwidth heavy, the lag is down to raw server work. You can play Eve just fine on a 28kb radio modem out in the Australian bush and for some that is the only option.
I used to use 56kb and now have ADSL but I still hang out with guys on narrowband. Neither before or after have I had any problems with lag. Before suggesting we cut off a whole chunk of the playerbase try moving out of Jita.

I live the Midwest, in a fairly large city. I could get any Broadband up until a few years ago when comcast put in Broadband. I honestly feel for those people that need to live with Dialup.

Just becauseyou have bb, dont mean its any better, just because your download and upload speeds are better, if you want a faster repsonse, peeps would have to lower there contention ratio.

I believe that that report was discredited. If it is the one i am thinking of it couned by postal code, and if a postal code had a single customer with brodband then that postal code was counted. Even if 90% of that postal code could not get Broadband.
