topics like Santa Claus, tooth fairy...etc.
I recall the lies and the subtle disappointment as I grew up that I was being lied to.
Maybe I'm weird, but I don't think it's right.

There are cases where the lies will benefit the children more than the truth. As you said, Santa and so on.
But then there are also cases where parents lie to their children because they don't have the guts to tell them that life isn't always sugar sweet. And that's why we got freakshows like X-factor where some teens gets absolutely humiliated because they have been told by their parents they are good which they obviously aren't. I remembering being a little irked when I found I'd been b.s.ed about Santee also. But I continued the tradition and b.s.ed my own kids, because: -School, TV, etc. were going to do it anyway -I didn't make a big serious lore thing out of it. I kind of did it with a wink and a smirk. -I figured letting them go along with the customary fairy tale things wouldn't hurt them too much. I mean, if discovering Santee and the Tooth Fairy were fake really traumatized people, the customs would have died out, right? People would have quit doing them, because they were no fun. -The alternative is to tell a little preschooler that what their teachers, friends, and friends parents are sayings is all a big lie. That's kind of a heavy burden for a little kid's psychology to have to deal with. "Were [sic] not your monkey and so what?"-á -The Sex Pistols (2006) |

I so want to comment on this thread, but I can guarantee my opinions would trigger a flame war. Must....keep... mouth..... grrrr!
I will say I think the santa stories and such are part of a cultural meme to condition people to just accept the BS that comes later. They are little lies designed to prepare the brood for the big lies.... Can I have your stuff? |

I'm going to have to go with the OP on this one only when it applys to mythical characters.

What do you think? That those are legends and/or mythologies, not necessarily a "lie". Otherwise every work of fiction and imagination is just a lie. Life would be bland if done away with such things, and difficult to express thought through narrative for various learning and nurturing purposes. |

Edit: Trades some money for a tooth, rather. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tooth_fairy Yeah... because we shouldn't encourage imagination in children. We should just tell them that they will have a sad life of hardship and die a agonizing death one day. If a kid want's to believe in fairies and unicorns when they are little, as all kids do and want to, it's not my place to smash their little imaginations. Huge difference compared to a "lie", and to call it such just lessens what a lie is.
If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything -Mark Twain Wow, what a liar he actually was, eh? I don't need to remember the tooth fairy, it's just a myth, folklore, which is just a tradition with imagination for the benefit of children. If you somehow feel wronged by your parents for playing imaginary games with you... well can't help you there. |

As far as I'm concerned, things like the Tooth Fairy and Santa are not necessarily "for the benefit of children". It's a lie, plain and simple. I don't really care, it just is what it is. Holy Satanic Christ! This is a Goddamn Signature! |

When my daughter gets older I will allow her to believe whatever she wants (Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, God etc.) but I won't lie to her. If she asks me if Santa is real, I will tell her to pull his beard and find out. Will I encourage her? Yes of course I will. Would I lie to her if she asks the big questions? Depends on how old she is. If she asks the sex questions at a young age then the old stork tale will be told.
Lying to children is okay, it just depends how you lie to them and the context it is. Dustbunny, Legionhare, Miner. |

What do you think? Your parents didn't lie well enough then.
If they go the extra mile to make it believable the joy of discovering the truth bit by tiny little bit will be all the better. Also, the festivities are the same fun even after wards, so why not. *shrugs* Stupidity should be a bannable offense.
