Had my first dirtay pirate encounter yesterday.
Its a bit embarrasing to say the least... I lost a Gallente Battlecruiser to a Minnie destroyer.
Oh there was some amarr frigate too... but I smoked that thing in record time.
The destroyer should have been an easy kill.. he won for one reason only... RANGE. I was not able to get closer that 14 km range... my blasters optimal are about 1.5 km with a 3km falloff. Basically I dont hit squat unless you are within 5km. My webber and nos both have 10 km range but I couldnt even close in that far.
It was a long fight getting through all my armor but eventually he nickle n dimed me to my structure.
He offered a 21 M ransom to escape... but I only had 12 M on me. Im still new to the game... he should have realised I wouldnt have that kind of isk. So I got blown up. Then he offered 3M for my pod.... I did the 3M to keep my implants.
So.... for my next encounter.... to survive.. what would you folks suggest ?
I have 3 options I'm looking at....
A: Stick with blasters and fit a MWD to close range. B: Switch to Rails with 10 km optimal and 10km falloff (thus able to hit anything that is scrambling me < 20 km) C: Fit a few WCS's

I was leaning towards MWD.
Already bought and trained the skill this morning. I think I'll try that out.

Option A, a MWD, might help you, it's what I would suggest but a lot of people might disagree and insist that you use option see (see below). I'll say right out that I'm new, so take this advice with a grain of salt. I read the forums quite a lot, but experience is a million times better than reading, and I lack quite a lot of that.
Obtion B is up to you - if you like blasting things at a distance and don't need to worry about turret tracking speeds then this might be a good idea. In all honesty, the largest thing I've piloted is a frig so I really don't know much about equipping larger ships.
I might be new, but I know you ought to forget option C entirely. You might get away, but then we "dirty pirates" will just come in larger groups (and lable you a coward, and an easy mark since you'll have to take away from your tankage to fit "a few" WCS as you said).
During a ransom situation, though, if you can't afford it, try - and type this very quickly so the "dirty pirate" doesn't think you're stalling - saying "I'm new - all I have is x isk, please is that enough?" Know, though, that if you aren't new, and "dirty pirates" can check up on this easily or if you aren't very polite, you will undoubtedly be blasted away... |

He must have had a smartbomb fitted. his weapon of attack was howitzer artillery cannon which should not hit an orbiting drone I would think.

Any small ship pirate would have shredded his drones first, with quite a lot of ease unless they are t2.
You need the MWD. Using blasters without it is a fool's errand.

I put a MWD on my new brutix just a second ago and was at 700 m/s in no time. I think that should do the trick.
Webbing drones are an excellent idea too.. I'll have to check what skills are needed and get myself into those... maybe some ecm drones too.

Edited by: Caleb Paine on 18/06/2006 09:39:08 What you can do also (or in combination with the MWD) is to fil rails instead of blasters, and then make use of 2 webbers. First of all it gives you range, in combination with an MWD that should be good and secondly, the 2 webbers make sure you can hit targets closeby as well. AND if you actually grab someone, it doesn't matter how fast his ship is, 2 good webbers means he can't run away.
I got an inty with my Railox that way, I waited for him to get comfortable missing him on purpose for a bit (not using the webbers) so he gets kinda lulled into safety. All of a sudden I hit him with 2 90% webbers... he drops down to 38m/s and didn't really like my rails much.

In fact, it's all about PvP in EvE-Online: There is always a way to kill you if properly fitteed. If you have close range only weapon, you can be attack from out of range, if you have 'long' range weapon, you can be orbited very close (using your low tracking).
You can fitt some of the following counter items: - ECM (you'll be able to jamm target of most small ships) - Nosferatus (Small ships avec very sensible to nosfe, but the range of Med nosfe is 10km only. This is efficient with short range hostile only). - WCS (all comunity will recommand this only if you are travelling, do not go PvPing with it plz :) ) - Small drones (they might outrun the small ship) - Smart bomb (very efficient agains a group of small ships) - etc.
Basically, next fight will certainly not be the same, even same players change fitt from time to time to be efficient, creating surprise.
Lastly, do not let them checking your fitt, if you escape once, not not expect to escape 10 min later from the same guys, update your fitt.

Oh guess I should ask... I know MWDs will not work in I-Spheres or in deadspace. Will it still function if you are warp jammed by a player ?
Glad your adapting and not giving up. The MWD is so important for you if you want to use gallente ships with blasters etc so good move using one now. As for the I-spheres they dont stop the mwd functioning like deadspace do. They just stop you from warping out. Also you probably allready know this but just in case you dont like a few ppl when they start, Webbers dont stop ppl from warping away they just slow them down, but can also sometimes help the player to align faster as well. So dont use your webber unless you are trying to stop someone from docking, jumping thru a gate or can't keep them in your turrets range due to them being faster than you (unless of course you have a scrambler/disruptor fitted as well.

This is why i love fast ships. Speed and distance can be very, very powerful if you know how to use it. I dont fly battlecruisers until ccp decides to make their mass less.

well, I would say drones, as they are pretty much your only defence vs frigs in any battleship, but if yo uskill them up they are enought to make anythigng smaller then a cruser head for the hills. get drones to 5 asap, ESP if you are flying gallante ships. Even the mega has a descent bay on it. every drone less then 5 you are flying is wasted DPS.

Hey Diemex
NOS wouldn't have helped in this situation unless he had a MWD. Which he didn't. His drones went pop real fast thanks to 7x 280mm Arties and my webber. After that it was just a matter of time before I worked through his armor. TBH there were three rats on him aswell. Diemex, you could probably have killed those three in the time you were chasing me about. You might have been able to tank my guns after that, then agian no gaurantees. Plus my buddy would have come back in a new ship so... I suggest you use a cruiser. Both the Vexor and the Thorax are very nice.
As for the ransom, maybe some of these more experienced pirates can give me a good figure for a BC Ransom? I figure if you can fly a BC you can afford a ransom for it.

Howdy Evil pirate.... can I interest you in some soap ?
Just so everyone knows, I wouldnt call this a bad experience. You have to learn somehow. Phelan was kind enough to teach me. ;)
I was also pleased that there was no stupid smack talk or any BS like that. The encounter was about as good as any like that can be.
Still.... my offer of soap is on the table. Free soap to any pirate that wants to change his ways !

Personally, I would keep my Blasters, squeeze in an MWD and train up better drone skills to help you out (I assume your talking Brutix here).

I'm not a pirate, so I can only comment from the other end:
If a rasom is more then the insurance cost (less actually since I get ships cheaper then payout) + expected cost of mods, I see little reason to pay it. The only savings I would have then is time not needed to refit. That can be large or small depening on how much I earn how fast I guess.
So if you want people to take a ransom, the amount has to be at a level where it is a better option for them then to get blown up. People with T2 fitting would pay more, newbs without it would pay a lot less, people in T2 ships would pay more.
If you don't adjust your ransom to that level I doubt you'll have much luck with it. --- The Advanced Drone Control Panel. |

Hmm but you must remember that a player like you might be inclined to pay a heftier pod ransom (don't know how many implants you have/how expensive your clone is) and thus it would be better to pay for your ship to avoid getting to the pod point. ___________________________________________

I assume that you were hunting NPC's from your post, therefore fit an optimum PvE setup. This time it was a destroyer and an frig, next time it might be a Scorpion Battleship. There isnt a good setup beacuse pirates use a variety of ships and methods. The standard tactic is to keep and eye on local chat for unknowns and keep the scanner open to detect incoming ship. -------------------------------

In my opinion, you're flying a ship you're not ready to use. Maybe you have the skill and experience to use it (judging from your enlightenment as to how to prevent this in the future), but your wallet is obviously not in on the notes. Another thing you should be concerned about is how you were found and killed by pirates at all. How could you let them get so close? Perhaps you need to learn more about low sec and survival before bringing an expensive ship out there?

That's an awfull lot of might. If I'm in a dangerous area where I can get ambushed like that I might have clone jumped to one without plants (very damn likely). But yes, the clone price could also flow into calculations.
However this also depends on the type of ship you are flying. With an interceptor you might have a good chance to catch a pod, with frigs and destroyers with sensor booster you might as well. But then, smart people have shortcuts to turn off effects when things get iffy and might very well warp away with their pod intact (those little eggs warp mighty fast if the pilot knows what he is doing).
So it's a gamble for both sides, but I doubt I would pay any ransom on implants I may or may not have while still in my ship unless I think your chances of catching my pod are excellent. So you got the ship you get to ransom that, to ransom the pod, well you have to get the pod or have a very convincing position on it. --- The Advanced Drone Control Panel. |

to be honest with corps like these i wouldn't pay a ransom. they have proven (to me anyway) that they are not to be trusted after a recent incident where they started being friendly in local saying come say hello etc then tried to gank me (including an ex-corp member of mine now in that corp). a failed gank attempt i might add on 3v1.
sorry to hijack thread a little. drones are the really thing here. maybe increase ur drone skills mate. with light weapons and a web low skilled drones are quite easy to take out. also a useful tactic is to power away from a target and then while he's chasing u pull a quick 180 degree turn and charge at them. often u can just get within web or nos range on the turn. also as mentioned before web drones can be a real help.

Insurance + Age Bonus for the modules is about right most times. A young BC will hardly have any really expensive modules fitted so he won't care for his ship blown away when counting insurance + mods is far less than the requested sum.
Don't know how old he really is, but I'd say asking for around 10-12 mil will do the trick on a really young BC. =================================
