It's not just kids that play CCGs. Also, being able to download EON for $3 would rather defeat the point of a magazine, unless it would be released much later online, I suppose.

That's actually completely usual (if not cheap) a price. What it lacks is the option to buy less since you hardly need a whole box at first (even though it's nice). So, starter pack for 20$ish and boosters in smaller quantities (5, 10, 15, 20) would surely attract more interested tries. ---

Tbh their prices are right, they doing it at like $20 for the starter packand full colour guide... and then a pack of 24 booster packs which comes to about $3.20 per pack
which is like average for these card games... i just think they need the option to preorder / buy without getting all the stuff, they need seperate sales for booster packs and starter sets

I think it's for anyone who feels like they want it really.
The average age is very high in EVE, compared to other MMOGs at least, so I doubt there's a risk of that happening.

Originally by: Exelsior Hmm. Now all we need is models of ships - i would buy metalic ones off CCP for sure, not sure about cards though.
Why? For Minmatar curl some duct tape. For Caldari just paint a funny shaped stone. If Eve had kewl ships, dunno, like Wing Commander had, yeah, maybe then.
Also, all ship models would have to come with warnings:
frigates: not suitable below the age of 3, small part can be swallowed
raven: not suitable below the age of seven, lots of spike thinggies can poke eyes out
titan: warning, risk of back injury.
Seriously: Why I would play an Eve trading card game when I can play Magic or something is beyond me - I have a hard enough time convincing local area friends to play Eve and not quit. To limit my trading card game to a new game that is limited to a target group that small in comparision and buy loads of cards for a new game ... not gonna happen. Could also have to do with the fact that the background story, races and stuff never appealed to me that much.
If Eve had kewl ships and kewl races and actually immersion that might convince me. Like real aliens, like me actually knowing how a Sansha's freak looks like (why don't they have some real alien-like stamp-sized thumbnail pic that taunts you with canned responses during NPC combat?). So many questions ...
But I realize a TCC is as good as being able to print yer own money, so I can't blame CCP for trying ... -----------------------------------------------------

Tbh I would much rather have a board game for EvE Online than a CCG.
Designer games like Puerto Rico or Caylus require a lot of thinking and are fun to play with a group. There are already quite a few computer game conversions like Age of Mythology, World of Warcraft or Age of Empires III, especially the latter one looks promising.
Just make sure that you get a good game designer that lives up to the high standards modern board games have to fulfill.

And for those of you who have no experience with trading card games, this is how it works:
Each player uses one deck (at a time). You can play with the preconstructed decks, but the idea is to build your own decks that work around a concept which is usually a strategy such as aggro (lots of attacking monsters and spells to boost them or direct damage etc) or control (spells to prevent damage, remove monsters, buy more time, get resource advantage etc.) or even specific card combos that work well with a deck built around them.
When building a deck it's of course best to evaluate the most fitting cards available for suitability. And that's what makes it a trading card game - you buy boosters and hope you get good cards which you can then either use or trade for others to get the ones you want and need for your deck(s).
For casual play you never have to buy more cards. The pre-constructed decks are usually rather balanced between eachother, so they are well suited for learning the basics and just enjoying the game without the strategical aspect.
You could say building a deck is much like fitting a ship - you prepare defenses and offenses that work well against other decks and less well against others. Like you need to know what modules exist and which you can use, you need to know how the cards work and choose the suitable ones.
Because decks are always shuffled, there is an element of luck and when building a deck one needs to consider how many of which cards to use (4 of the same is the max in MTG) to make it likely that starting hands are favourable and there is enough 'mana' (assuming there is something similar in EVE TCG).
In actual play it's also important to know when to play different cards which comes down to player skill and tactical knowledge of both your deck, the opponents deck (metagame knowledge), the cards in general and the game mechanics. You take risks and win or lose.
Usually games are 1v1's (so no fear of getting blobbed ), but they are a lot of fun with more people aswell (FFA, 2v2 etc.) and add more tactics in the game. And it's also a good way to spend some social time (with beer, too).
I just hope the game has tactical potential, and I might get some friends to play it with me. ---

Although many CCGs are aimed at younger people, not all of them have to me. Magic is mainly played by older people and is in my opinion quite a fun game, if somewhat expensive if you want to play competively.
I hope there is going to be some more information about this game though, since I doubt many people are going to spend $100 on a game they know nothing about.

Edited by: Cheyenne Shadowborn on 19/06/2006 11:56:33 I can so see how that works:
I tap seven Omber and thirty-three stacks of Tritanium cards and bring a Harphy into play. Then I tap my Covetor and with the ore bonus I attach the Webber to the Harphy, and tap it to gank your Executioner.
My damage goes on the stack, but the Executioner does something weird and after trying to call Wizards of the Coast and realizing they don't do this thing, I petition the stalemate.
Next, my kitchen table is occupied for the coming two and a half years while I wait for a fix for the problem -----------------------------------------------------

In that case, get Twilight Imperium, its well worth it. Its a huge game, and its a little different from other stratagy board games in that you must win by a political victory, rather by pure domination. It creates some very tense moments...
To though rolling over the $96.79 price, you must realize that that gets you 500 cards, tokens, and a manual! It boils down to about $0.20 per cards which really is typical, plus a little more for the extra materials.
I just broke down and shelled out some for a year subscription to E-ON, and I don't think I could take much more to my bank account. I WILL definitely be getting at least one starter set, though, when they can be bought separately.
CCP, will you be offering wholesale deals to retailers? Or will this be only available through CCP online? There's this little gaming store down the street from me - pretty popular because its a huge college town (the college, not the town) - and they would probably be interested in getting a few boxes.

Nothing has been officially released yet. I know that they have had a bit of a re-design since they were last seen at the last FanFest (not by me, sadly). The most info on them would have been in E-ON Issue 2, but if you missed out on that you can view a sampler they put out.

the facts are the majority of people who play eve wont know any RL friends that play eve aswell, even if you do have RL friends that play eve the odd's on them also buying the cardgame at that price and quantity is very small.
96$ is alot of money for something most people probably would never have the chance of using, if your going to fanfests or corperation meets then i imagine owning a pack is a good laugh but probably nor worth 96$ ,unless eve-online tournaments start poping up all over like there are yugi-oh ones then i doubt many of these starter kits are going to sell. i would hardly call them "starter kits" when they cost 96$ and u get tons of stuff they should be called PREMIUM KITS
starter kits should have been like 25% of the stuff for 25% of the price.

Yeah thanks, already got that one .
That is, the second edition. Third edition seems to be a huge improvement over the second one, as it is more similar to the aforementioned designer games. You dont simply build up your fleet and smash everything in a giant dice fest.
Still, I think combining a strategy game and the character building approach of EvE has the potential for a quite different and interesting game.

But please never add special cards with keys that give you an in-game item. I think that was planned for a wow card game about 1 year ago, don't know if they did it. I'm not 15 anymore and not gonna spend hundreds of dollars for collector cards just to eventually get the code for a Titan.

& $100 as well, what a shocking rip off..

0.21$ / card - a real "rip off"
Before you get your knickers in a knot, the starter pack alone should hardly cost any more than 15-25$, and is completely sufficient for playing with less ambition.
P.S. Could you raffle a few boxes to celebrate the launch? ---

I just hope the game has tactical potential, and I might get some friends to play it with me.
Very nicely done, Jin. Now if I could piggy back off Jin's explanation, I'd like to answer some of the posts. In the second issue of EON, someone did a preliminary write up on the game. From that article, it was reported that the game is NOT based on Pokemon (sorry for you Pokemon enthusiasts) it is based on Magic the Gathering. That means, it will be ship heavy (which, of course, is obvious given the game is based off ships). More than likely, modules will be cards that can be "attached" to ships to modify their abilities. There will be fast effects ("instants" they are called in Magic) that will temporarily boost a card's ability or have an imediate effect on the player.
Now judging by the some of the monetary concerns, $100 is average for a box of boosters alone if you purchase from a street vendor. (Yeah, I am card collector and have done my fair share of buying.) Here you get more: the starter pack and the box of boosters. Also, keep in mind that this is JUST a pre-order. I imagine it is put together for the ccg enthusist. I'm sure that once the game get's going, we will be able to purchase smaller amounts of what we need.
For those of you that do not know the jargon. Premium cards are foil cards. These cards are printed on a card with a silver reflective surface. The lighter opaque colors allow the silver to shine through and give it that irridescent effect. Common cards denote cards that more likely everyone else will have. They are produced in en mass and form the basis of the ccg game. Uncommon cards are not as frequent as commons and as a result are harder to come by. Rare cards are like rare mods in the game and usually have an effect that others cannot replicate and printed less often than the Uncommons. Now other CCG's (like Pokemon) use ultra-rares. These are rare cards among the rare group. Making it harder to get these cards. Magic also uses this idea but they don't advertise it. They have rare Uncommons and rare Rares. Just like, in EVE Online, there are rare named items and among them, there are rarer still named items.
I hope this helps answer some of the questions. Personally, i can't wait for this start up. I think I am ready to let go of Magic and pick this up instead! Wohoo!

Just another thought. The article assumed that you would be playing an entire race. If that is the case, and the sets come based off two races, you could go in half with a buddy and split it down the middle. For example, my roommate, who also plays EVE, is gonna go half with me in the Great War. I'm gonna take Gallente and he's gonna take Caldari. Then, we are gonna split the boosters right down the middle: 12 each. In the end, all I spent for it was 50 bucks! Matthias DuBastyra Imperiadux of House Draconis

For those who think this is expensive, the typical price for a CCG booster pack (usually 15 cards) is US$5-10, and the price for the starter deck (usually 60 cards, but often with a lower chance of rarer cards) is US$10-20. The pre-order packages have two starter decks and 24 booster packs, so:
2 * $10 = $20 24 * $5 = $120 $120 + $20 = $140
They're selling them for US $97, so they're actually on the cheep side as these things go.
And these are hardly just 'chunks of cardboard'. The artwork on CCGs is usually quite detailed, and some of the artwork floating around for the Eve CCG looks no less astounding. Additionally, you have all the design and playtesting that goes into any game. ---- "Well in this case, he's being flamed, and rightly so, for whinning about a game mechanic that doesn't actually exist." -Lorth |

Maybe a board game would be much better received since you get "the full package" associated with the game.

It's mostly the price for people unfamiliar with trading card games, and the inability to order smaller quantities at this point.
People also have quite strong prejudices of trading card games in general, strongly relating them to kids and nerds. I know since I used to play Magic for a few years. It is, like most prejudices, based on false knowledge (or none at all) but stereotypes for some reason root deep.
Positive feedback and additional information will help people to overcome their ill-formed opinions, however. ---

I must say I've never been a big fan of CCGs, in fact I always considered them to be little more than a glorified Top Trumps, but after having *tried* to play the game I can see the strategy in it. And the cards are beautiful.
And you can bet there'll be a tournament at the Fanfest (that's not certain - I'm just taking a guess.) - So I'm going to get up to speed and take you all on. If I can't be a PVP god online, I'll do it offline.

First of all, congratulations to CCP, I hope this sells very well for you. I also hope this comes out before the next big patch. But I have a couple of questions for the Wrangler-Meisterà
1: I reason that the big sets will come with race specific cards, drones for Gallante, Duct tape for Matari, and so on. I also reason that there will be commons through all 4 races, Minerals, shuttles, and so on. Will we be able to sell unwanted cards for ISK without hearing too much noise about it, or will it be a bannation issue? 2: Eve is still very much a niche market in MMOGÆs, but getting bigger all the time. The problem for Eve CCG is player availability. This is a non-issue in big cities, but anywhere else the cards become very shiny card stock for want of players. I predict its just a matter of time before all the cards are known, scanned, digitized, randomized, and placed in a for-ISK website where we can play against each other without a 3 hour drive. I know the game, images, and designs are all property of CCP. But my other option is to spend $200 on something that will collect dust. Just to make it clear to everyone that would like to set-up/play at an Eve CCG site, whatÆs CCPÆs take on this?
Thanks for reading everyone, and fly safe out thereà Tychus

All boosters are generic consisting of random cards, and the starter packs are pre-constructed decks of cards that will most likely mostly come from the boosters (edit: meaning it is likely you'll get the cards that are included in the other set as individuals from the boosters. You have to have someone tell you their composition, however but usually pre-constructed decks are buried the minute you start building your own deck(s)). Having them both in one pack is not a bad idea, though.
Oh, and you need to wait for the BoB expansion set. ---

I'd like to point out that I've collected many a different card set in my time. And this represents a great deal. More often than not in the UK a 25 booster pack (Similar roughly in number) goes anywhere for ú60-80gbp in retail. Therefore the starter pack + 25 boosters for roughly the price @ current exchange rate of $192usd is ú104.00gbp for both sets and boosters. So it's actually less than other 'Premium' card booster packs without the starter sets. ------------------------------------------------- AWMCorp is Recruiting

Originally by: Robert Perkins, gamevortex.com The programming team at CCP has been very busy working on the upcoming mega-expansion, The Path To Kali. While this expansion also involves a lot of 3D model upgrades, Reynir Hardarson (Founder of EVE Online) managed to find time for most of the art department to work on a side project he's been wanting to do - a Collectible Card Game.
I have seen the artwork for the cards in PDF format, and have to tell you they are quite beautiful. So far, 250 cards have been designed for the EVE Online CCG, with the possibility of introducing some additional cards with the launch of "The Path To Kali" - an upcoming expansion for EVE Online.
When I was talking with Magnus Bergsson, the CMO of CCP Games, he admitted to me that he typically didn't play Collectible Card Games, but that even he found the EVE Online CCG to be fun to play.
The cards are being manufactured by the same company that does Magic: The Gathering and, as the cards have just gone into production last week, you can look for them to hit store shelves sometime around August 2006.

What about Eve beer, or Eve chocolate? Perhaps a RL eve-mobile. If people are prepared to buy iy and it means we don't have to fork out for expansions SOE style then I'm happy.

Maybe I'm just a cynical SOB, but what the hell. CCGs, Eve on my non-existant PDA, voice chat, a magazine... If CCP spent their resources on the actual game itself they wouldn't need all this add-on stuff that a lot of people won't want. I know it sounds like a silly idea but why not try for a relatively bug free game before you branch out in a hundred directions. Everytime I see something new in development that isn't on the game itself all i can think of is another bug goes unfixed... :(

An instruction book! From CCP? I hope they got someone else to write it.
I don't know anyone in RL that has ever heard of Eve, let alone plays it so I don't see myself buying these to play with. I did not get the magazine and have not ordered anything from the store because of the shipping rates. Anyone been able to get the link to work to see what the shipping is going to be on these puppies to the US?
While I would like to get some to see the art work and such and I don't think the price is out of line for such cards I think I would rather just extend my power of 2 account for a year instead.

Yes, because all the DEVS responsible for c.racking bugs and code fixing are the ones who said "**** the real game, lets waste time on a CCG".

Edited by: Albus on 19/06/2006 22:21:07 The two starter packs seem to be based around the two different main conflicts in Eve (Gallente vs Caldari, Amarr vs Minmatar). Can you play a game with 2 people using just 1 starter deck, one person as Amarr and one as Minmatar, or would you need a starter pack each? Also, will the booster packs have cards from all 4 races at random, or are there different sets, one for each conflict? Also, can you mix cards from different races, or do you have to build a deck of all the same race cards?

From what I have read in interviews and in E:ON etc you can play 1v1, 2v2, ffa etc so just 1 stater pack is needed if you just want to play 1v1. Boosterpacks have random cards, they are not race specific (so even if you buy the gallante/caldari box you will most likely get amarr and minmatar card as well as caldari and gallante in the booster packs.
Considering I haven't read the rules I can't say for sure but I would guess it's possible to play mixed races etc too, you probably don't have to play 100% caldari but can mix caldari and minmatar and such deck would have it's own strenths and weaknesses. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

People usualy say CCG is kids games, because all CCGs they know or heard of are basicly Magic, Pokemon or YuGiHo (or what ever it is typed), however people seem to forget or simply don't know (can't say I blame them) the countless CCGs that are/were around.
I for once, currently own a deck of BattleTech CCG (one of the most strategic games I ever seen), Magic (from the old times, 5th and below) Warhammer 40k CCG, but I also played NetHack, Legend of the Five Rings, Vampire. And even I have a very reduced knowledge of all CCGs that have been around in the last, I don't know, 10 years?
Most of these games can be insanly strategic if well build and cards can have numerous stats and value all that come into play (/me remembers BattleTech CCG).
So if you think CCGs are kids games, wait until CCP sells stand alone starter packs and then buy one and try it out.
I know I wount find any players to play, but I'm ordering them for my love to CCP and colletion value as I'm a sucker for well designed CCGs.

I don't know about a CCG game, but I'd buy a regular playing card deck, or two, with EvE graphics on it.
Ships ( maybe limited to capital ships ) as the face cards ( Titan as ace or king? Carrier as Queen ), Races as the suits, fighters ( and/or drones ) or race icon, as the symbols ( the diamond, heart .... )

EVE: The pen & paper RPG
I'd play that...
Although the price for the CCG is directly in line with other CCGs on the market (a small bit cheaper in fact), it is just another one in countless hundreds of barely heard of IPs that have flooded the CCG market since the success of Pokemon. If it has been on cartoon network there is likely a CCG for it.

Originally by: M00dy I used to be sooo addicted to Magic The Gathering. Luckily I was able to escape. I'll be damned if I get sucked into another TGC.
I'll prolly just try out one of the preconstructed decks. But that's it. I swear, no booster packs!
Story of four miserable years of my life.
I'm incredibly tempted to look....just one megapack. That's all, no more...I promise! I won't purchase another. Ok, maybe two. I'll have to check my credit card balance.
Then again, I do have to pick up that engagement ring sometime soon. Maybe I can put it off for another month?
